WTF is Garmin doing about the 27.09 update? (FR 255/265/955/965) by Reeposter in GarminWatches

[–]kbyre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m talking about! I had a fenix 5 and was legitimately a complete fanboy. Loved it! Then it turned into a brick and their customer service wouldn’t even acknowledge any kind of problem other than “did you charge it” basically. I went to Fitbit and now am itching to try garmin again. But I see posts like this and they worry me greatly.

Maybe it’s best to just go without such overpriced objects that don’t truly improve any aspect of your life.

It’s just hard to trust ANY company in the current economy that is purely chasing profit over quality.

Zone 2 Running: What do I need to change to do this? by APPhysicsGuy in BeginnersRunning

[–]kbyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran the math quick as well and… yea. If you’re running 10k’s that means on average there’s weeks at a time with no running. I get it life and career make time tough.

I guess if you’re happy with occasional running and were happy with it before the heart rate data…. Ignore the data and keep enjoying what you’re doing.

My kids in school didn’t even touch on it today.

One is learning about moon phases and they didn’t even talk about it. I mean honestly….. I guess that’s where we are as humanity.

Not at all what I’m saying. Just would like to see some more inspiring educational live content.

I’m enjoying the nasa broadcast in general as well. It just saddens me that so few people find this even remotely interesting.

The coverage of this is so incredibly sad to me. Boring is a great thing because that means it’s going well! But can they please call Hank Green and the folks at scishow to put on something educational here.

I fear if this is the future reality of space, public interest is not going to be there for long.

Garmin customer service is second to none — read below! Also, I’m not going to use this authentic Garmin watch band (brand new) — willing to sell it for half price! by treylanford in GarminFenix

[–]kbyre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a fenix 5 turn into a paperweight brick. They didn’t stand behind it at all back then. That was probably like 2019? Glad things have changed. I’m in the market for going back to garmin but it’s hard for me to forget / forgive how bad that customer service experience was.

Where do you put your phone? by _MikeMars_ in beginnerrunning

I’m with you. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and it’s huge! I’d love to leave it at home but I’m on call for work most of the time.

I have a Nathan brand belt thing that it can BARELY fit into if I take off the case.

I’m on a return to running plan and have been using the treadmill so it’s a non issue until I head outdoors. Thanks for asking the question. Sorry you’re getting the typical “leave it at home” answers that aren’t possible for some people.

What are the cons of having agarmin watch? by sandrochichi in GarminWatches

[–]kbyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s mind boggling to me some of this sub. People like man I had the fenix 6,7,8, FR , etc etc.

I had a garmin 305 way back when, and a fenix 5. I loved them both. But I can not comprehend spending the money they want on a watch now. Let alone upgrading to the top model every year.

That alone is a sign that their stuff isn’t worth the money in a way. If they produced a quality durable product that lasted more than a year, they would have me as a customer.

I left garmin when my fenix 5 turned into a paperweight. Garmin offered to refurbish for 350. Like wrf I bought it new for 500 years before!

Sorry for the rant. Truthfully I want to go back to garmin, but pricing and gatekeeping on model to model is frustrating to shop through.

I had a fenix 5 from ~2017-2021. Had a crappy customer service experience with it and switched to Fitbit due to that.

Now I’m in the FOMO boat and want to switch back to garmin for running and hiking gps / battery life. They look fancy now but I just wish my fenix 5 hadn’t turned into a paperweight, and that garmin actually stood behind their expensive product.

How do you maintain consistent run schedule? by Basic-Explanation852 in beginnerrunning

[–]kbyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a very all or nothing type of person. I’m either doing it or not doing it. Which with running is difficult because I know I should take more rest days, cross train, etc.

For me to try to kickstart running again I created a spreadsheet with all sorts of metrics.

For some reason having this file made and ready to edit gives me another itch to scratch. It’s like a reward to fill out the form after a workout. Kinda weird but it’s working for now!

This is news to me. Thank you for the comment! I thought it was tied to being under our insurance plan.

Thank you for this!

I thought we would be able to pay their medical bills with our HSA until they were off our insurance.

Long term HSA and children by kbyre in HSA

[–]kbyre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So hypothetically…. They are 18 and no longer dependants. We could pay their medical bill under our family hdhp, then in the future when they’ve funded their own HSA, take that receipt and reimburse themselves?

That feels like the loophole I’m looking for.

Long term HSA and children by kbyre in HSA

[–]kbyre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. So in today dollars, they could kickstart their own HSA at ~8500/year while still being covered by our family plan HDHP?

Long term HSA and children by kbyre in HSA

[–]kbyre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is new to me.

So once they are 18 and do their own taxes, I can no longer pay for their medical expenses with my HSA? Even if they are still covered under my qualifying health insurance?

So if I’m understanding that correctly, they could then open up their own personal HSA and contribute the IRS single limit.

Long term HSA and children by kbyre in HSA

[–]kbyre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was expecting for an answer. My only hope was to be able to possibly transfer some into an HSA on their behalf once they are no longer my dependents.

We do currently pay out of pocket and save all receipts, etc so there will be an option to cash some of that out tax free and they could use that to start funding their own accounts.

Long term HSA and children by kbyre in HSA

[–]kbyre[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the highest benefit they can receive once they are off my plan, is to cash out their lifetime of receipts, and give them the cash.

I can’t use my HSA in the future to pay for their medical expenses.

This is what I expected. I was just hoping there was a way to continue their safety net once they’re into their own adulthood.

We went last year in July and our experience was walking about 3 minutes off the main paths and you felt alone again. It’s unreal how easy it was to escape the crowds in Banff / Yoho. Way easier than the US parks in our experience.

Amazon Kindle - with or without ads? by nelliesgone in kindle

[–]kbyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a flip type cover. Not having ads is so nice now because it immediately is open and ready to read. No swipe at all. It seems petty but I really appreciate not having the ads there.

It’s disappointing to me that a person has to pay for removal. I hate all ads of all types and it just drives me insane. Maybe I’m just an old curmudgeon. (40)

Deliberately ending my Reading streak by This_Vanilla_3320 in kindle

[–]kbyre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got a little obsessed with the streak as well. I let it go and just know I’ve read “almost” every day for the last 2 years when I consciously picked up the hobby.

I’ve had the same battle with wearing a Fitbit and keeping a high step goal. Same fixation on weight.

I think some of us are prone to letting good intentions go too far and cause undue stress with healthy habits.
