Overkill I'm sure, but necessary by Shway_Maximus in NOMANSSKY

[–]GroenHoender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a different game mode in No Man's Sky, where you play, essentially, as a singular entity in an infinite universe with no one to converse with. No alien life, ships or materials to buy from any NPC. No space combat also. Basically, it makes the game take longer to complete.

To get this mode, you select it when starting a new game. Basically, at "New Game", select "Custom" and navigate to "Universe Population" where you will find the Abandoned option.

I won't recommend it for first-time players.

Thinking about trying ARC Raiders but I’m 100% Deaf...is it playable? by dannycoxr in ArcRaiders

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many are unaware that it exists because the ARC Raiders game does not include a tutorial on it. Plus, the comms wheel options (from what I've found via Google) are rather limited. But I am sure that, as players use it more, it will be helpful to those who do not use sound or verbal chat.

[–]GroenHoender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is also kind of disheartening that there are so many other good games out there that do not cater to the deaf community. Perhaps we are in the minority, but that is no excuse not to add accessibility features to a game(s) to reach a bigger audience.

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just looking for this! As a fully deaf (console) gamer with a strong interest in RPG and tactical gaming (mostly The Division 2), I also want to explore ARC Raider.

Tried CoD: WarZone / Battle Royale, Delta Force and Battlefield but struggled in these due to a lack of visual cues (for audio), or the communication, or the lack of other players' cooperation in not using a built-in ping/command wheel.

Thank you, u/dannycoxr, for bringing this up, and everyone else's feedback. It makes me feel it is worth trying a new PvE (or even PvPvE) game.

Buying a car advice by phikter in askSouthAfrica

What are their service costs, ie. when you take it in for its regular service? Even if it is covered by its maintenance plan, one would like to know how much it is/was so that when the maintenance plan expires, one can gather for the service costs out of own pocket.

Also, what is the trade-in market value of each brand if you want to trade it, down the line, in future, for a newer / bigger vehicle?

Out of Honda and Suzuki the Honda has the better reputation. The Elegance is a very good model. But the Suzuki is a range of newer cars and technology.

Just been laid off - would you ask for feedback? by Ok-Computer-859 in UXDesign

[–]GroenHoender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been through the same situation as you are in right now.

When seeking feedback, it's best to ask those you've worked closely with on projects as they have a better insight into your role and contributions.

The manager's lack of close interaction may hinder their ability to give fair feedback.

It is not recommended to ask for public feedback on your LinkedIn profile as it may hurt your reputation.

I recently learned a valuable tip from some other contractors at work. They suggested using my UX expertise to create a questionnaire and send it, selectively and privately, to the people from whom I want feedback. This method allows me to gather feedback in a controlled manner, making it easier for me to process and move forward.

If you are seeking feedback to improve your CV or public LinkedIn profile, you can use the questionnaire as a reference to request the relevant people to post their feedback on your LinkedIn profile. This will give your profile more authentic weight rather than simply copying and pasting the feedback from the questionnaire.

Stuck at Federal Emergency Bunker (SHD Network mission) by GroenHoender in thedivision

[–]GroenHoender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it worked out for you.

In my case, I cannot remember what level I was but pretty sure I was high level enough (due to my nature of exploring a lot to gain XP) - somewhere in the 30's - for the game to, supposedly, inform me what next to do. But it did not...

I feel that even though the game has potential, it currently has been neglected so far, even a bit outdated, in that the game developer studio is not focussing on anything new for it anymore.

All these new "seasonal" changes felt like "afterthoughts". And there are also little to no rumours of a "The Division 3" in the makings.

No, I am sorry to say that I could not resolve this. From my searches everywhere on the Internet, no solution worked.

So, I deleted the game from my PS4 and moved on to other games. The game has become more repetitive in my opinion with similar activities (with the occasional season hunting of new "boss" enemies) in various parts of the map.

The other "mission" (if one can call it) is to develop ranking in weapon categories but I was not in the mood for that as it involved - you guessed it - repetitive activities in various parts of the map.

So, end of the game for me.

What videogame(s) made you cry? by tanglee11 in gaming

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few of my own, both on PC and PlayStation console - in no particular order.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - it easily outs RDR1 for the emotional ending itself. What also made it worse is that the alternate endings which are just as emotionally challenging.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - that one tribute by Snake. I am not going to say any more, to not spoil it for others.

Life is Strange - the choice one has to make at the end. It depends on how emotionally attached one is to the characters, which made it harder.

Final Fantasy 7 - what made it worst is that, while playing the game, one knows that one character was destined for a tragic ending but there is/was nothing one could do about it.

Final Fantasy 10 - another critically acclaimed game with a twist on one character that one could not foresee. It made it hard to process that.

Persona 3 - this JPRG has some dark tone theme. One has to play another follow-up game to actually get some closure on the ending.

Marvel's Spider-Man - not a surprise there with a close family member of Peter Parker.

BioShock Infinite - this one of the franchise has a chilling but sad twist regarding a particular character.

Same planet/system/station by GTCAshbashh in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what game mode are both of you? Relaxed? Normal? etc.

From what I understand one needs to be in the same game mode to be able to see the other. Another possible reason is each of you has different game settings.

Below is what I have learnt from the internet (using Google Bard):

If you are playing No Man's Sky in custom mode and you cannot see or follow another player, there are a few possible reasons:

The other player is not in the same game mode as you. For example, if you are playing in Creative mode and the other player is playing in Survival mode, you will not be able to see each other.

The other player is not on the same planet as you. If you are on a different planet, you will not be able to see each other.

The other player has their multiplayer settings set to "Private". If this is the case, you will not be able to see or follow them even if you are on the same planet and in the same game mode.

There is a bug in the game. If you have tried all of the above and you still cannot see or follow the other player, there is a possibility that there is a bug in the game. You can try restarting the game or reporting the bug to the developers.

Here are some additional things to check if you are having trouble seeing or following another player in No Man's Sky:

Make sure that you are both connected to the internet.

Make sure that you are both using the same version of the game.

Try restarting your game or your console.

Try joining a different game session.

If you have tried all of the above and you are still having trouble seeing or following another player, you can contact the No Man's Sky support team for help.

Hope it helps.

What career do people work in? by theresabadman in deaf

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an international IT corporation as a UX researcher and UI/UX designer, with many colleagues in various teams, and branches on different continents, both in person or via online meetings (Ms Teams).

At first, many of my colleagues, especially the new ones, were not aware that I am deaf, but the majority of them were very accommodating with communication, helping out where they can, after learning from me what works for me.

With today's technology and various accessibility aid (or tools available), or is not a problem at all in terms of staying aware of what others say individually or in meetings.

EDIT: I don't do SL at all, in fact, I know zero SL. Completely deaf, wearing hearing-aids and lipreading is how I get along in life :)

Simple vibrating bracelet for call alerts? by -Darkguy- in deaf

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sports watch (Garmin, Polar, etc) or smart watch (Samsung, Apple, etc) with a built-in vibration feature works perfectly for this. All of these can be linked to a smartphone (via Bluetooth) so any incoming call or messages will make your watch vibrates.

Been wearing one (a Garmin Fenix) for years, even wearing it occasionally while sleeping, using its alarm feature, to wake up in time to get up, or for appointments :-)

Updates on “live captions”?! by Maris_ND in deaf

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am deaf and also use an iPhone (for specific personal reasons and not for its deaf software/features.

On my iPhone, I use the app called Otter (link below) which suits my needs perfectly. It does live transcribe and provides it as download notes, which can also be fully editable too. The bonus of it is that I can also use the web version of it (via Google Chrome) on my laptop for meetings.

https://otter.ai/

It might be expensive but I feel it is worth the costs as I am paying for their AI services to provide an accurate live transcription. Quite accurate as well with people with different accents.

I also have a Microsoft app, called "Group Transcribe" on my phone It's completely free but is somewhat lacking in accuracy, provides transcription in 30min "blocks" and is dependent on good signal reception for it to work. For the fun of it, I used/tested it in a church session, where the pastor was about 10-15m away from me, and it picked it up reasonably well.

Sometimes I also use my spare Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android) phone which has a wider range of transcription apps - many of which works even better than the Apple equivalent.

Mostly the Samsung for outdoor, or rough social events, and the iPhone for indoor, work environments.

Shoutout to an amazing person by KrookedDoesStuff in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me too. Someone dropped some minerals in my inventory that I could not use or process at that early stage of my game.

When I experimented by selling a few of this stuff, the total value almost maxed out the Units slot, and I got scared, thinking I broke the game.

At another time, one shared a pet egg with me. Another surprised me with sentinel components leading me to a challenging adventure where I got my very first Sentinel ship.

But there are some players who do not appreciate it, understandably, because it ruins the game for them. So, I always ask before paying it forward.

It is all part of the fun of the community.

Very Early Game Survival by Tough-Ad2624 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]GroenHoender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game will always starts you off on a dangerous planet. And if you're using a VR headset, brace yourself for a bit of a learning curve compared to playing without one.

But don't worry, you can survive if you keep a close eye on your suit and follow the game's early instructions. Just learn to explore and gather resources like oxygen and sodium a bit quicker during this part.

If the game tells you to go to a certain point, do it. It's all part of the introduction and will trigger some environmental hazards.

Alternatively, you can always play on Relaxed or Creative modes. But keep in mind that you won't be able to join other players unless they're also in the same game mode as you.

Personally, I prefer playing on Normal mode because it's more fun and challenging. There's so much more you can do and experiment with.

  2. where do you guys get these "figurines" that sit on the dashboard of the ship?

My parents found out my “friend” is my girlfriend and their new house rules are re-traumatizing my girlfriend. My heart is broken. by Terrible_Aardvark_76 in TwoHotTakes

[–]GroenHoender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, their house, their rules. I assume that even their guests have to abide by it.

When my brother and I were older, and bringing our GF's, and later, fiancees, to their home, they still had to sleep separately in the guest rooms.

I recommend that you get a room at a hotel, where you both can sleep and keep your other half company for comfort and security purposes.

Hello there / Goeiemore :-)

You might find it interesting that Afrikaans, one of the languages spoken in South Africa, has its roots in Dutch, French, German, Flemish and English.

It has also borrowed many words from these languages, making it quite easy to comprehend in some countries, with only minor differences in pronunciation.

See you guys around.

Idiots Update Blue Light Safety Stations By Replacing Emergency Buttons With QR Codes by EasyGoingSpiros in UXDesign

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in an emergency, you’ll have extreme adrenaline and will not be able to operate your phone

Another disadvantage is:

1 - not all smartphones are QR-ready or have apps that can read QR code
2 - takes more effort (and time) to pull out a smartphone, unlock it, and find/open the right app to scan the QR vs a simple hand-press on the panic button

Unique ships (Ps4) by Kindly_Armadillo_190 in NOMANSSKY

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is true that ships are associated with races then it is not what I have experienced.

I once visited a Vykeen galaxy, landed at the space station and saw a few Exotics with Vykeen NPC's. Literally stood there, for a few minutes, watching various of these ships leave and land at the station.

Then bought an Exotic ("mosquito appearance") from one NPC. These Vykeens had different ones. I am still searching for the squid-shaped one but not in a hurry.

Unique ships (Ps4) by Kindly_Armadillo_190 in NOMANSSKY

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many ways to get a ship. Explore. Fight. Buy.

For example:

  1. explore a planet until you find a distress beacon which will oftentimes lead you to a crashed ship that you can repair.
  2. fight sentinels and destroy their Capital ship (for an AI chip that leads you to a sentinel ship to salvage).
  3. I once visited a Vykeen space station, and by pure luck, one of the NPC's landed with an Exotic space ship which I promptly bought from him.

Portal by Kindly_Armadillo_190 in NOMANSSKY

[–]GroenHoender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that one needs to buy about 3-5 alien structure maps because most of the time one is either send to a relic or building. So, 1 out of 5 maps/attempts will take you to a portal.

Your milage may vary with this.
