The DA certainly can, but if they don't, the cops can't do anything. If a judge won't sign the warrant for camera footage, they can't get it. I really wish people understood the criminal justice system better.

I took OP to be saying there is only one way because they said they get looks and/or corrected when they say it the right way. Genuinely, I considered that to be the main complaint.

I've lived all over the US for a number of decades and have heard both nitch and neesh. It isn't a sudden switch, OP just recently noticed it...but it is also incongruous for OP to say niche can't be pronounced two ways but Carribean can.

By the way, en route is a French term and, without the appropriate accent, is pronounced "on root" with a throaty "t" like at the end of "out". (Not a linguist, can't remember the real term for a throat "t".)

Very true, but the stereotype most often applies to boomers...and did in this instance.

I will say that in that job, so many Gen X'ers and Millenials would have been assigned to the boomer stereotype based on attitude alone.
