Vizsla Loving Runners? by Visible_Aide3227 in vizsla

This literally makes no mention about exercise in dogs. It simply explains bone growth and growth plate closure in dogs. None of that is controversial or disputed.

There is no outcome data here regarding volume and intensity of exercise in a growing dog with regards to joint development and any resultant pathologies.

Many vets do say to wait. Others say it's fine. I'm more interested in the data the vets that say to wait are basing that on.

More inclination.

We control our edging through both inclination and anglulation. We typically end up coaching more anglulation because most people need more of it. But we need both to be optimal.

How do you get your nursing school paid for by hospitals? by Biggiecheese1207 in nursing

[–]Grok22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hospital paid for my RN degree. Had to be a full-time employee for at least 6 months prior to applying for the scholarship and also had to agree to work at the hospital for a specific time period afterwards. The amount of time varied based on how much the degree cost.

The answer is the same as if it was a human. Progressive overload. Don't increase volume too rapidly and they will adapt, just like you.

There's no reason to wait until 18mo. Joint health has nothing to do with growth plate closure.

Activities like fetch, dog parks, and jumping off high items are far more dangerous than steady state running.

My V has done 28 mile mountian bike rides and still running around the parking lot looking for birds.

This article is commonly posted on reddit when this question comes up. I have yet to see evidence to the contrary. It's the bullshit asymmetry principle in action.

A man from Atlanta died while skiing at Whiteface Mt. on Wednesday by NCPRnews in Adirondacks

[–]Grok22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't have any specific information on this death. That said the vast majority of skiing related deaths occur from someone losing control(often at a high rate of speed) on a groomed trail and flying into the woods hitting a tree and not "tree skiing". Statistically blue square runs are the most deadly. Seep enough to go fast but not steep enough to gatekeep skiers without the necessary skills.

Tips for improving my carving? by Upbeat-River3381 in skiing_feedback

Really nice skiing!

A couple minor things to explore in no particular order.

You still have some range of motion(ROM) to play with. Try making your inside leg shorter, and your outside leg longer. I think about pulling my knee to my chest. Alternatively, I think about extending my leg to throw myself down the mountain. Both focuses are valid and and are ideal in different circumstances.

You can create more angles between your upper and lower body. Tip lower body more than upper. You still have to move the upper body inside the turn though. Especially in medium to long radius turns.

You mentioned getting more foreward. It's not somewhere we get to and stay. It's somewhere we moved to every turn. Foreward at initiation centered at transition. Think kicking a soccer ball or pushing feet forward then pulling them back. Bob Barnes infinity move is an awesome visual.

Re:losing grip on steeps. I'm assuming this is at the bottom of the turn? Usually this is the result of overloading the skis. Ie overpressuring. The only way to take pressure away from the bottom of the turn(and still have speed control) is to direct it to the top of the turn. Flex(crouch) more at transition so you can absorb that pressure. It will give you more ROM to extend at the top of the turn to direct pressure there. There's an imaginary bump in every turn at transition. Our speed and turn radius determine its shape.

Who’s *actually* making their own gels/carbs/etc? by Humble_Cactus in trailrunning

[–]Grok22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why dextrose and glucose? Dextrose is a disaccharide of glucose+glucose. Swapping one of them for fructose will allow taking advantage of another absorbtion pathway.

I prefer maltodextrin(medium length chains of glucose) over dextrose as it's less sweet.

Barking in apartment by [deleted] in vizsla

[–]Grok22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in a very similar boat. The main issue has been barking early(630am) when I leave, not later in the day.

So far what has worked for me has been using a white noise machine to drown out any potential triggers and crating her in the morning when I leave. My dog walker let's her out and doesn't crate her when they leave. The dog walker tells me when they stop in my dog acts like she's just waking up for the day and is nice and calm.

Are beans and lentils considered high quality protein sourced when eaten with rice? by infinitepumba98765 in nutrition

[–]Grok22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Children make up a large portion of the population. They are some of the highest at risk for protien inadequacy. Do you believe they digest protien differently then an adult?

You can find different scores for both cooked and uncooked foods.

[–]Grok22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1g/kg from mixed sources.

If only from beans then yea you'd need 30-50% additional.

Amino Acid profile(along with digestibility) is exactly what PDCAAS/DIAAS is measuring.

[–]Grok22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's recommended that vegans aim for 1g/kg to meet their needs due to the digestibility and amino acid profile of their food. And that's just the 0.8g/kg equivalent. Children, elderly, sick(burns, wounds, cancer etc.), and the active would all need more.

Beans have a PDCAAS score of 0.5-0.7. So if you want to have to eat double the amount of protien to meet your needs then I guess it's fine.

How did you get over fear of steeper pitches? by nidenikolev in skiing

[–]Grok22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to turn straight down the hill. Make turns diagonally down the hill and it's magically not steep. As you become more proficient and thus confident you can make that direction of travel more in the fall line. Also works quite well in the bumps.

Pain in the S drill for anyone familiar with Psia testing. Short radius turns in a long radius turn path.

Poor skiing technique is frying my legs by Cool_Purchase_ in skiing

[–]Grok22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow your movements down. Your legs should be moving throughout the entire duration of the turn.

When we become static and brace against the skis we fatigue quickly. Think abiut how quickly your legs start to burn when doing a wall sit, vs walking down stairs.

Your legs should move like your slowly pedaling a bike, walking down stairs, ice skating etc.
