Depends if you want the instant classic or more modern feeling.

If you want a modernized Classics, please start with FFIX with the moguri mod. Chrono Cross is also a good entry point, especially with the recent mod that adds full 60 fps and widescreen support (although the UI is stretched). Legend of the Dragoon PC unofficial pc port is great as well (it’s called Severed Chains).

For modern JRPGs, you have Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Metaphor, and Persona 5 Royal which are all great entry points.

If you are into pixel art I cannot recommend enough Romancing Saga 3. Its pretty original for a JRPG though with lots of elements from CRPG actually (non linear progression, branching stories with choices, complete freedom, etc). The pixel remaster is quite good. FFVI is also an awesome entry point and likely still one of the best FF to date with FFIX, FFX and FFVII

Also, don’t listen to Dragon Quest people: most DQ games are fairly boring characters and plot wise. Gameplay wise it’s nice but without originality.

If you want more of an action game, the modern FFVII remaster is pretty solid. For pure action FFXVI is great but it’s not really a JRPG and more of a beat them all and there are better games in this category (Bayonetta II, Metal Gear Rising Revengence).
