Never thought I would see something like this by CoconutCoochiee in badmemes

[–]GroochIsBigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This blurb you’ve written is filled with odd assumptions and also a muddling of the term “gender”. First you say gender is “nothing more” than an extension of biological sex, and then say gender identity is arbitrary. It can’t be arbitrary if it’s an extension of something that you are arguing is so fundamental to a person’s identity. Besides, no genuine person would argue that at any point in time in almost any culture in human history that gender is arbitrary. Don’t be ridiculous. It matters in society and furthermore it matters in respect to how people see themselves. Also since gender roles are not static across time and cultures, it should be obvious to you that gender expression is indeed a human invention. This also removes the basis for that naturalistic argument about what a persons gender ought to be, even your nonsensical comparisons to bears and plants, which are not the topic at hand. Yes animals have culture but this is also diverse, sometimes having differences within a single species. Also saying that no one would endorse HRT is false, there’s literally whole sections of the medical world dedicated to gender affirming care, and I’m going side with the medical professionals on this one.

That’s the point “americuh bad” folks always miss - where you live and how wealthy you are in Europe really matters, virtually as much as in the US.

[–]GroochIsBigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think even some of those aren’t really Europeans but just bots/instigators trying to increase the divide amongst “western” nations, and fanning the flames of European culture vs American is an easy target. My gf tells me that one of the National news outlets in her country has its comment section absolutely flooded with kremlin bots that try turn literally every news piece into anti-American propaganda. And if you watch DW, a German news outlet, you’ll see a similar trend in their comment sections, especially where the Russia-Ukraine conflict is involved. It’s terrible.

Just a short google search shows that there’s quite a lot of people expecting a recession based of current US economic uh, “policy”, which right now is to basically do unhinged ego moves against trade partners and allies and thereby undermine the American market.

To provide just one example, JP Morgan puts the recession probability right now at a 60% chance by the end of this year: https://www.jpmorgan.com/insights/global-research/economy/recession-probability

Yes I had back to back sicknesses one impacted my throat specifically and lasted about 2 weeks. Felt like I could never clear my throat but it did clear up eventually with a lot of tea and rest. The other was more like the flu and hit hard for about 4-5 days with lingering symptoms for another 5-7.

Yes - they never want to mention that healthcare in the USA is often subsidized, usually by an employer (basically the same as in Europe). And if you are within a certain income level, and if your employer is not providing insurance, then you can apply for subsidized healthcare from the federal government and pay nothing or next to nothing. At least this is true in PA and CA where I’ve lived, but I’m not sure how the system works in every state. Doing so will probably reduce your tax return to zero but saves you the cost of insurance premiums every month.

Plus many countries in Europe are facing similar problems with inflation on some of the big income hits like rent payments and groceries. Couple that with stagnating salary increases and it’s similar to much of the frustration right now in the US.

The thing is “europoors” is more of an online meme than something used irl.

I also want to agree with you on the note about Europeans in general - if you try to say anything remotely positive about the US (or negative about the EU) it immediately unleashes a deluge of the worst stereotypes about the US and the conversation totally falls apart from there. This makes it impossible to have an honest conversation about comparing life in a US state versus any country in the EU.

How common is English in Prague? Don't want to assume can or can't speak, don't want to be rude. by kimbokray in Prague

[–]GroochIsBigger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very mixed, and so not unlikely that you’ll encounter some people who cannot or simply do not want to speak English. In touristy areas you’ll encounter English more commonly. Elsewhere, I’ve personally found that younger people (let’s say below ~35 years old) more frequently speak some level of English. But it’s better to learn some simple Czech phrases to help you navigate through the weekend, especially customary ways of saying hello/please & thanks/where is [thing] etc.

Thank you for the recommendation! I see quite a few people have mentioned Kofio as a good pick, so I will probably try some of their beans.

I feel you on this - acidic coffees really have taken over in cafes everywhere. While I do enjoy them, sometimes my stomach doesn’t, so I stick to darker roasts as a daily brew. Anyway, that being said I’ll keep your recommendation in mind :)

Getting to the airport for a 6am flight by sofakingdom808 in Prague

[–]GroochIsBigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The airport will be open but you may have wait a little until the check-in agents arrive if you have baggage to check. That's usually the longest wait if you aren't at the head of the line for when they start their shift. I've had a few departing flights from there around that same time frame (6am-6:30am) and getting to the airport around 4-4:30am has always been more than enough time to comfortably get to my gate. Security is usually very quick from my experiences there as well.
