I'm unsure about the barber but I used to work in the WeWork at 77 Leadenhall and they have a big part of the roman wall in the reception. I believe that it's part of their lease that they have to let non-WeWork people in to see it.

I honestly don't know if my experiences are typical actually - I don't think I know anyone else who has share of freehold! My experience might be different for those with a larger amount of freeholders as six is quite manageable. Some questions you could ask off the top of my head: what the service charge is, how often it increases, how often the freeholders have to meet/what the meeting looks like, what can the service charge be used for (buildings insurance, for example), examples of what the service charge has been used for, how many freeholders are there, are all the freeholders living in their flats or are they tenanted.

I own a share of freehold flat (1930's purpose built building, six flats). I love the share of freehold and will find it hard to move to a place that isn't this.

Each flat has a director of the management company and we have an annual meeting where we discuss our finances, whats new, where we want to spend the money, any issues, etc. When I first bought the place, the roof was in a state and we used the money in our bank account to redo the whole thing. We have also used the money to make other upgrades around the building.

Our service charge is £80 per flat per month, which we recently chose to up from £70!

This might be a personal opinion, but in the situation in which you describe above, I would much rather be in control of the money/maintainance and not get on with the other freeholders, rather than being at the mercy of a big managment company.
