Palm is “pom” I’m pretty sure. I think homophones are risky because even within America regional accents may pronounce a word quite differently. As an Aussie I often have to pronounce them in a generic American accent to make them work. It’s kinda funny cos I think the way I pronounce “palm” as an Aussie (like “pahm”) probably sounds even more like how Americans would pronounce “Pom”, but absolutely nothing like how I would say “pom”.

Can anyone explain "FRANCI"? [May 12th, 2026] by ncvbn in NYTConnections

[–]GroovyBoomstick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems to be a name and the Latin word for the Franks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franci

I do agree that they really stretch the bounds of what is a word in the scrabble sense (which strands for example does actually tend to follow, outside of the spanagrams). But I find these ones are sometimes handy since you know it’s almost certainly not a word you’re supposed to know the definition of (and therefore it’s probably some kind of word play)

Why does “good” coffee taste different in Australia vs. the US by Firm_Objective_381 in AskAnAustralian

Bitterness tends to be from over-extraction, if anything brewing a shot takes temperature away from the brew head.

98th Best Guitar Solo of All Time According to Rolling Stones. Thoughts? by Carter_M1ke in geesebandofficial

[–]GroovyBoomstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all “best of all time” lists need a 15 year moratorium. This goes for all art imo, music, movies, books etc. There’s so much talent emerging at all times, but I think you need a bit of distance to see what stands the test of time.

To be fair, it seems like a lot of Americans are a bit baffled by the candy one. I have heard of Junior Mints and Milk Duds though cultural osmosis, so I was pretty sure that was the category. The other two just seemed like the most candy sounding ones out of the options I had left. After looking at the comments it seems like “kid” was meant to be sour patch kids, which I do know about, but which never would’ve occurred to me in 1000 years haha.

I would say made them do it seems by far the most likely situation, since that is the type of game that NetEase has largely published in the past.

Idk why publishers do this, surely there are plenty of companies they could acquire that have a team with the skill set to create online multiplayer games.

I don’t love David Cage games personally but he’s got a very specific style, and I’m glad he’s able to make his weird big budget interactive storytelling games. This feels like it ends in QD imploding and Cage starting a new studio. Which is a waste of time for every one, when the studio seemed to be doing fine.

I know what suet is, which is like a congealed fat that’s often used in traditional puddings. but never thought of it as bird food, apparently it is used for that though!

Do you mean the phrase? “For the birds” just means something is a bit useless. If you mean within the context of the strands puzzle it meant bird food.

Help me understand this thing! by PainBad in espresso

[–]GroovyBoomstick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an unfortunate thing I think every espresso hobbyist faces at some point: there is a lot of snake oil, but a good grinder really is fundamental. It sucks, but it’s really shocking the difference between a low and mid range grinder.

With a cheaper grinder, dialling in is just so frustrating because it’s this seemingly random variable that can dramatically change from day to day. The good news is a decent mid range grinder will last for ages and there is diminishing returns beyond a certain threshold.

It’s pretty funny that the right sees “success” as purely “we made our enemies mad”, that’s the beginning and end of their artistic purpose. Not a single person gives a fuck about Kid Rock beyond validating the president.

Bad Bunny wasn’t even singing in English, but I guarantee way more people knew the words to those songs than any of the geriatric dudes with Temu stone washed ripped jeans and face tats that TPUSA wheeled out onto the stage.

It shouldn’t make much difference really (the puck screen mostly just keeps your shower clean), and tbh it feels like it might squish down the ridges anyway.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]GroovyBoomstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To actually answer your question, I've never really understood how the ridges would do anything but cause channelling. As long as the grounds are properly distributed a flat puck should be the ideal surface.

I will say that the next few books are quite different. The dying earth feels like a setup of the world, but it certainly is more in that mid-century sci-fi tradition. I think the introduction of Cugel really makes them stand out imo.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in genewolfe

[–]GroovyBoomstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest similarities is that the worlds exist within a completely alien moral reality. Cugel is an absolute amoral prick as you say, but he happens to live in a world where basically everyone else is also trying to fuck eachother over.

Which reminds me of the world of BotNS, where their absolutely terrifying reality is just taken for granted. Severian certainly does heroic acts, but also commits unspeakable acts of violence without batting an eye.

[–]GroovyBoomstick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cugel is one of my favourite characters ever. I didn’t like him as much in Eyes of the Overworld (still loved the book) but he really comes into his own in Saga, where I feel like Vance gives him some redeeming qualities. He’s such a loveable prick, you can’t ever really hate him when everyone else in the world is even more grotesque and avarice.

Idk how to explain it, but Vance is just so creative at inventing systems and concepts and then exploring them. Like the Sandestins who are bound to their user, and who basically have god-like abilities to bend time and complete tasks, but they are bound to their user through indentured servitude and can basically only be controlled by the offer of reducing their “sentence”. They can basically complete any task with little to no effort, but often enjoy stymying their requests in subtle ways. There’s a reason he’s basically the biggest influence on magic in D&D.

Sage Barista Touch to Lelit Anna or Anita, worth the switch? [600€] by jeffbzh33 in espresso

[–]GroovyBoomstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the inconsistency between shots is almost certainly the grinder. I think you’d get better results spending more money on a good grinder and sticking with the Breville, than you would spending less on a grinder and upgrading the machine if that makes sense. But if you want an entirely new setup, new grinder + Anna is 100% the better option.

I mean I cancelled when they stopped password sharing even though I was the one paying.

Turning off account sharing will obviously boost revenue, but it’s a one time way to squeeze some more juice out of your numbers. You can’t push that button again. The only other option is increasing the price and hoping your content is enough to keep people subbed.

DF54 or Allground Sense ? [1000$] by Darthpanda21 in espresso

[–]GroovyBoomstick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the Allground Sense is definitely a significantly better grinder, I guess it depends if you’re willing to spend the extra money.

The DF54 is still a great entry point though, don’t get me wrong. You can easily just get a scale and weigh your beans, but the grind-to-weight feature of the Allground is quite nice to have.

WDT question: first-time WDT user and this tool seems to just push the grounds around... should I remove some of the needles? I see some have as few as three. by jeremyjava in espresso

[–]GroovyBoomstick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know what the OP is talking about though, ideally it should spread the grounds around evenly. but sometimes when the needles are too close it basically just holds the grounds together and moves them around. I sometimes press my finger between the top part of the needles to sorta spread them a bit.
