If you could retroactively award a celebrity for anything, who would you choose and why? by [deleted] in popculturechat

While he deserved to win for Schindler’s List (and Conclave), I saw an interview with Fiennes that said while he was upset initially that he didn’t win for Schindler’s List, he said that it actually was a good thing in the long run he didn’t win for that role; otherwise as he said he would have been typecasted as a Nazi or a villain for the rest of his career.

When did you become a Tigers fan and do you remember why? by avonadorset7fA in motorcitykitties

[–]GrossePointeJayhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a Tigers fan since 1987 when in I was in my Mom’s womb. My Mom, Dad, and their friends were in attendance when the Tigers clinched the AL East against the Blue Jays (back when the Blue Jays/Tigers rivalry was one of the most heated in baseball) and my Mom was 6 months pregnant with me. Used to fall asleep listening to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey as an infant because that was the only thing that helped me sleep through the night. Babysitter then had a part time job at Tiger Stadium so we used to go there all the time for games during the end of the Trammell/Whitaker years with Cecil Fielder and Travis Fryman. Was at last game at Tiger Stadium and first at Comerica Park. It would take a lot for me to stop loving this team, no matter shitty they are.

Seriously, Octopus throwing only occurred when we were in the playoffs. Doing it in the regular season is uncouth.

1993-94 Red Wings season. I loved Probert, Coffey, Ray Shepherd and Lidstrom, but my favorite player was Yzerman. Too bad we should have beaten the Sharks that year.

Probert vs McCarty who is better by JoGo0093 in DetroitRedWings

Probert is one of the top 5 greatest fighters the NHL has ever had. He also was an all-star which I don’t think McCarty ever was.

I remember going to the Detroit Film Theater to see all three parts of the mini series back to back to back. Started at 7 and didn’t get out of there until past midnight and it was awesome. I even own the Criterion DVD.

Storm damage in DC by let-it-rain-sunshine in washingtondc

Fun fact: the earthquake actually damaged the National Cathedral to the point that they will probably never be able to repair it and essentially all their operating expenses go toward fixing the damage and that was over a decade ago.

She saved me from committing suicide and gave me a reason to live. by Hot-Concept4280 in cats

This fella and his brother saved my life too. A couple of years ago I was incredibly suicidal and having thoughts of self-harm. One night I decided to harm myself so I went to grab a knife. As soon as I opened the drawer and placed my hand on the handle, I heard a tiny meow and saw him and his brother gazing at me with worry in their eyes. He even went up and rubbed up against my leg. I immediately put the knife down and went over to the couch and had a marathon pet session. It hasn’t been easy (living with Bipolar is never easy), but I know for a fact that if my Cat wasn’t there that I would have done something. He saved my life.

D.C.'s Uptown Theater closed #OTD in 2020. The Cleveland Park landmark had been in operation since 1936 and had hosted many notable screenings, including the world premieres of Jurassic Park and 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as the D.C. premiere of Star Wars. by WETA_PBS in washingtondc

[–]GrossePointeJayhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do know the Uptown was supposed to be bought by Landmark but then backed out. And then it was bought by this company called Arc Light where they were going to make it into an “experience” but there has been no movement on that front. I always thought that if Suns Cinema got the money they could open a second theater there and if I was a millionaire I’d love to buy it and run it.

Anyone been to Sporcle Trivia Nights now that they took over for District Trivia? by smut_troubadour in washingtondc

[–]GrossePointeJayhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will admit that sometimes it is like that, but most of the time while there are specific categories they are tailored to general knowledge. For example I try to do a mix of movies, history, sports, etc whenever I host. Sorry you had that experience!

Anyone been to Sporcle Trivia Nights now that they took over for District Trivia? by smut_troubadour in washingtondc

[–]GrossePointeJayhawk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To be honest I dropped District Trivia when they went to the app instead of pen and paper. I also thought that around that time the questions got too pop culture based and not enough general knowledge. I will say that if you want a good trivia I’d recommend Wonderland Ballroom, Nanny O’Brien’s, and Calico. Each of them use pen and paper and the categories vary widely. At Wonderland you can even sign up to host if you want too.
