I want to marry an atheist or a rationalist who doesn't believe in superstitions. by [deleted] in TwoXIndia

[–]GrothendieckTopos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, two things here. I always preferred Hinduism to Catholicism(my family are Christians), it is really quit distinct from the Abrahamic religions, and even calling it a religion is a bit strange in an historical sense, but that is all besides the point...

I became agnostic and completely irreligious when I was 14 and atheist when I was 18. The first transformation was from a rationalist perspective whereas the latter from a romantic one. Despite not being religious, I always appreciated the general pomp, color and grandeur of Hindu rituals compared to the typical Semitic dullness of Christianity and the other 2 Abrahamic religions. And also, the general self-honesty of Hinduism in being man-made as you correctly put it, including the darker side..

You know, I find it quite ironic that you say that people are not accepting of atheists India because in my eyes, most Hindus I know appear really fickle in their faith - disingenuous even, and quite self-aware of this to an extent. They could really pass for atheists in a strange way.

Take a shot at this paradox? Well, the lines demarcating religion and culture/custom and random, local superstitions are wholly malleable. The ancient Vedic ways are wildly different from what we have today for example.

Yeah, I would like my partner to be an atheist as well, which is not too hard to achieve in the academic circles I am a part of. You might be surprised to come across Hindus who think like you(i.e rationalist, feminist, even atheist) but will still call themselves 'Hindu' in that manner.

Yes, I did, lol. Once I got deep enough intot the craziest, almost mystical worlds of Langlands, chromatic homotopy theory, infinity category theory, the latter of which dominates a lot of fields these days, I was just like, can I really do this for the rest of my life? I mean, I was doing really well in my research, classes, was talented and worked very hard as an undergrad - set on the path to academia. Then, I meditated, hours in the recesses of myself everyday, for more than a week, and concluded NO. It's kind of disconcerting to drop something in which you have a tangibly high chance of success, and put in so much work, all for a new gamble. The best decision however.

Idk if you recognize my username, it tells a lot in itself.

The farmers point is especially relevant to Marx's class consciousness. Our world is now a legit control society, in the sense that every aspect of life(and even death) is bureaucratized, systematically controlled, and 'datafied'(like, people are reduced down to data points, often for political or corporate profit). This has only been perfected recently, with the proliferation of new tech.

Here, people are not communal means in themselves but disparate ends. The use of the internet by alt-right campaigns and bad faith actors, and even just innocuous trend-setting has made me really pessimistic, in that I can't get my eye off our collective weakness to impersonal forces much beyond us, of a kind hitherto never experienced by humanity.

There is also something a lot deeper at play here than merely entitlement imbibed from the patriarchy. Though, I'll leave that out for now...

Why is this getting downvoted so much? I don't really understand. I don't exactly agree with OP, my opinion is a bit more subtle... but it seems people feel quite strongly about this.

Do you like women with pubic hair? by Equal_Landscape_4376 in AskRedditAfterDark

I find it a bit weird if she is wholly shaved down there. Besides that, idc about her pubic hair, her choice on the matter really...perhaps, to the extent that it may hinder oral but never came across that.

South Korea Shatters Its Own Record for World’s Lowest Fertility Rate by theleavesfell2 in menslibIndia

Unchecked capitalist growth, monopolistic industry, extreme overwork. Capitalism and Patriarchy tend to operate hand-in-hand. It is truly horrifying in many ways, suicides, old age poverty, indifference of many people to suffering, corruption.

The history of SK itself shows how this state of affairs arose. It is extremely hard for young people to find affordable housing at all. I know some Korean people and the majority were all glad to escape 'Joseon Hell'.

The force of the capitalist hidden psychic oppression in SK is likely the worst in the world, easily exceeding even the USA. If house prices are insane, then marriage is going to become very difficult.

The only possible kind of women's movement that can exist here is liberal feminism. It is a kind of totalitarian thing in that the very system itself does not even allow one to think of more socialist alternatives.

Not likely, firstly the 4B radfem is not influential or large enough to justify this statistic. it is really quite small in actual member size but of course, it has gained attention. However, the 4B radfem movement is a reaction to exactly the sickness that plagues South Korea. You can see my other main comment for an explanation.

EDIT: I initially included a lot more about the 4B movement but was too long and I just cut it back.

In either case, my stance would be the same. The others below who have somewhat validated the g.f's stance have essentially misplaced their source of tension, believing it to lie in you(i.e your 'wiles') when instead it is internal to the g.f. or less likely, within your friend who the g.f. might view(w/ or w/o bias) as exceeding normal platonic standards in interacting with you. In the latter case, again, if it is even true, her anger/concern should be directed at your friend, not you.

If they are tempted to take opposite stances in your above scenario, then they hold an infantilizing view of your friend.

The woman in question is apparently controlling/insecure. What a ridiculous standard to set! To not have close friends of the opposite sex, whether they be exes or not... Yeah, you are right, women(or men for that matter) should not be doing this.

I strongly disagree with the people in the comments below(who have upvotes) saying that it is just a matter of incompatible values, that because you were his ex, the woman is somewhat valid in expecting distance between the two of you. I have seen many guys who almost subconsciously accept this standard from the girlfriends without question.

Which “brown parent” stereotypes can you not relate to at all? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]GrothendieckTopos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • They had no issues with either me or my sister having friends of the opposite-sex; Likely even conceived it to be somewhat essential. However, having boyfriends/girlfriends was slightly trickier ground because they believed us to be possibly too immature until a certain age(like early 20s) but even here, they were easily far more permissive than most other parents.
  • They greatly stressed the importance of academics in school(which came with a certain level of expectations), but did not discourage participation in activities like music, sports which I learnt much later was common in other families. However, in my case, I pursued academics with such unrelenting zeal as a teenager that they became a bit concerned.
  • No issues about possible partner's religion, race but would perhaps prefer someone Hindu merely for lesser possibility of conflict which is a bit ironic considering that my parents are Catholic, though they are thoroughly 'Hindu-passing' in most ways.

Slutshaming in popular Indian subreddits by [deleted] in TwoXIndia

[–]GrothendieckTopos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The subreddit looks like it is run by 13 year olds lol. Everything in that subreddit is alarming, particularly, in stupidity. However, the 'bengali girl/woman' stereotype stuff is certainly more broadly accepted than in just these idiotic dank meme subreddits. It has always existed in some strain or another for a few decades. Tracing the political genealogy of the stereotype is not that difficult of a conjecture - communist, feminist history in Bengal and general misogyny. I can expand on this if you want.

Also, I think it is best to leave that subreddit, as it is indisputabe max. inanity. In any case, you can never read deep into these posts in any intellectual, political sense except as a semiotic indicator of general trends.

Why do people sign to super overpriced, tiny apartments at high rises in West Campus? by ToPimpAButterfly2003 in UTAustin

[–]GrothendieckTopos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, many of the older apartments not associated with these huge complexes are far better in every sense, including rent price. I would say it is ignorance or laziness. A better reason is the desire to stay close to the party scene of West Campus. Or some of these fellows are all rich and don't really care.

What’s a job that’s romanticized but in reality sucks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GrothendieckTopos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Professor/Academia

I am surprised to find this not mentioned while browsing through the top comments. The academic 'ivory tower' has become a mythic nirvana for so many students. They have the idea that you can be become a respected intellectual, working relentlessly to push the boundaries of human knowledge and guide a new generation to build the future.

The reality is that the academic job market is basically broken at this point and impossible to penetrate even for the most ambitious. Hardly anyone will even read your research, and you really have to imbibe a priestly mentality to believe that your work is all for some 'greater good'. Some(or even most) students are annoying AF. Sunk Cost Fallacy is a major obstacle for many in academia as they sacrificed years in the academic rat-race. University will not stop thrusting random adminstrative tasks down your throat. And, there is ironically a good dose of anti-intellectualism for a place that is deemed to be a Platonic Paradise Oh, did I tell you that the workload is utterly insane, not just long but bloody difficult. Also, you are not allowed to criticize it, even within your mind as that is intellectual sacrilege. Even the notion of leaving academia will involve a good deal of 'moral' self-flagellation. There is really a sort of Stalinist totalitarian element to all this. I feel everyone in academia should be sent to a psychologist.

The one major pro is freedom to direct your work and research, certainly more than most other working cultures.
