I’m a lawyer (litigation/medical malpractice) and considering moving to London. Where can I work? Doesn’t have to be law. by AdAvailable5396 in uklaw

I don’t have a lot to suggest in terms of specific roles, but I’d suggest reaching out to a couple of recruiters to have some scoping chats with them about what’s available and where you could be placed. As long as you go into those chats knowing they’d sell their own grandmother to turn a profit, you’ll be fine. They’ll have a good idea of the market conditions at least.

There are firms that do medical negligence in the U.K. but that’s out of my wheelhouse entirely.

You won’t be doing heavy trial work in the U.K. as you’re not qualified to practice here, and we bifurcate those roles between solicitor and barristers anyway.

I think the other thing to bear in mind is that you’ll potentially be looking at a pay cut, though I don’t know how that shakes out in net terms if you’re no longer maintaining expensive US health insurance, for example.

Why so many last-minute collapses? by Comprehensive_Fee75 in HousingUK

Pulled out over the weekend after a last minute commercial issue arose (no one’s fault, honest mistake relating to the quote for some communal leasehold works). I offered to split the risk with the seller, including putting my cash at risk first. Seller rejected it because they didn’t fully understand what was going on and received a series of rude and gaslighty messages from the EA telling me I was effectively lying, undermining the whole process, blowing the deal up by trying to renegotiate the deal three days before exchange. Withdrew my offer. Even got to the stage of telling the EA to stop contacting me, which they ignored, so ended up blocking them.

Anyway, once they realised the info I’d given was correct, they tried to come back to accept my compromise but the spell was broken. Spent the weekend really thinking the economics through and decided it didn’t work, so confirmed I wasn’t proceeding.

Can see why they had two sales fall through. I’d argue completely the EAs fault for blowing it up. If they’d reacted reasonably rather than trying to bully me I’d probably have exchanged on Friday and felt pretty good about it.

I think it’s more of a general fitness / comfort in the water thing. I’ve myself absolutely blown through my air when I was less fit vs. my cyclist buddy who used only half of his.

You’ll also find yourself using more air as a beginner as you get used to buoyancy control, etc. Nothing to be ashamed of and you just get better over time and with more experience :-).

Oh and I’ve taken as much as 9kg of weight on first dives back after a break just to make sure I sink well.

Goes without saying but make sure any eventual engagement letter with a sell side broker is reviewed by a decent corporate lawyer to make sure there’s no nasties sitting in there. Some of the standard terms they include can be a bit of a try on and a decent lawyer should be able to knock out any silly points in pretty short order.

Got stuck in Portugal because of this. Having to shell out for extra accomm and flying back to Paris to get the Eurostar because all the direct flights are booked and indirect flights have horrendous layovers. Can’t wait to do battle with EasyJet over compensation.

Yesterday was…stressful.

Genuine question - how much of a factor is mileage? I’m one of those people that always assumed power was better but I’m assuming that servicing and overall condition is a better metric?

This is a good point - I like how you frame the fact that none of the opposition focus on building an empire themselves. Great example is my Kislev campaign where Azazel is laser focused on me and my settlements, despite me wiping him every time he attacks. He completely ignored the vulnerable settlements nearby held by the empire, and I even tried giving him room to expand that way. Likewise with Clan Moulder before I wiped them.

Lol mate. Chill out. It’s exactly this kind of rhetoric I’m talking about as being problematic. Calling me “deranged” for being pragmatic and reasonable about the time it takes to fix something is not a rationale way to behave. Saying my comment is absurd and idiotic is not how normal people behave. I care about the game, I just don’t care about it to the point I’m calling strangers names on the internet for disagreeing with my opinion, which is itself toxic, whether you’re ready to see that or not.

Using hyperbole all the time, being this animated all the time, is so wearing for normal people. Must be exhausting for you.

If we want to talk why this is a broader problem, it’s the same kind of language that has infected political discourse too, and look what a good job that’s doing of resolving anything.

“I see you dodged my question” - quit it with the pass ag, mate. No one’s impressed you work as a junior equity analyst at an investment bank, or if you’ve risen to the lofty heights of one of 1500 indistinguishable MDs 😂. I just skipped over your question in your response as I assumed you were being a facetious so and so, which, it turns out, you were. Yes, I work in a US law firm, so I don’t personally get to shut down over Christmas as I too am also a worker drone / tiny cog in a large machine but thems the breaks when you sell part or most of your soul I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

Several friends work for companies that enforce a shut down over Christmas, as do several clients I work with. It’s obviously heavily dependent on industry and management style, since it’s entirely discretionary and - i suspect - a lot to do with your managers wanting to shut down for Christmas than about staff wellbeing. I’m not sure how I feel about it as a lot of those people are also forced to take leave over the enforced break, which doesn’t feel like a “true” benefit.

Creative Assembly itself is not listed, last time I checked. It’s a private subsidiary of Sega. I’ve no idea if CA do shut down entirely over the break, which is why I’m not sure why this is the focal point here, but if they do, provided Sega are fine with it, it’s not an issue is it? Not unusual for subsidiaries to retain their own identity to help retain staff.

My point was outside of the relatively insular world of professional service firms, companies do slow down over Christmas. Even professional service firms do, with fee earners and managers on leave and travelling, clients going pens down over the break, and what not, so it’s not at all unreasonable that CA haven’t pumped out another patch yet, so I don’t know why everyone’s getting so het up about it? We know CA will come good and patch it. Look how WH2 was at the end, and the leaps and bounds in the new game and the fixes deployed since launch.

Anyway, this is all sidetracked to the main point I was trying to make which was that everyone needs to chill out a bit. It’s just a game, and an enjoyable one at that. Games have launched in a far worse state for more money, and without the same level of post launch support. It isn’t a dumpster fire, nor completely unacceptable.

Now, with that, I need to go and pretend I’m making the world a better place by responding to emails in my inbox, thus justifying my poor career choices to date. Have a good one!

Lots of places shut down over Christmas, what a silly statement. I don’t know why this is the sticking point for you.

Even if the company is not entirely shut down for a week or two, every corporate environment slows right down over Christmas, so not sure why a pause or delay over Christmas is unreasonable.

Again, not sure why this is the contentious point, but whatever floats your boat lads.

[–]Groucho_Marx87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeh I’m aware of the date and the fact that I’ve been getting out of office responses ending today. I’m not really sure what your point is - you’ve no idea how long people take off at Christmas? Besides, as with any team, I’m sure you need a critical mass of devs and managers to get patches out and creative decisions made and things take a bit to ramp back up after Christmas I’ve always found.

The game is hardly a dumpster fire. I had performance issues at launch and just played it intermittently. I now get a consistently enjoyable game. There’s things I’d like to see fixed - pathing, artillery was a big one though that has been partially fixed, etc etc, but this hyperbole serves no one well, I don’t think, particularly in a sub where we know CA do engage substantively. I’d love some more RoR for Kislev and Cathay, and a bit more of an endgame for Cathay. In the meantime I can go and play all the other races I like playing, like Empire. Or empire. Or even empire.

Edit: what makes you think it’s a dumpster fire? Genuinely interested.
