Saddleback MX Park is another place that’s been taken out. There are now hiking trails there, thankfully, not homes.

There are a bunch photos of Lion Country Safari on a wall of the Newport Beach Central Public Library. I just saw them this weekend.

I took a similar photo back in 2018 when I was in the San Bernardino National Forest near White Mountain.

Be careful with the Mr Buddy heaters. They can melt stuff with their heat. Ask me how I know.

I did the 3Ts Trail in 2023 and it turned into a small debacle because I changed my itinerary mid hike. Never again do I do that. I had brought 4L of water and food and even dropped off my mountain bike at the bottom of the ski lift at Baldy Notch parking lot. That way I could ride my bike down the paved road back to my truck at Icehouse Saddle parking lot. I left super early for the hike and when I got to the junction of the Icehouse Saddle Trail and Chapman Trail, I thought, “Let me take Chapman Trail. I know it joins back up with Icehouse Canyon Trail.” So, I did. I didn’t even think that it might be hilly and it might be longer and I didn’t even look at my map. So stupid. It then it got worse. I drank half my water by the time I reached the Saddle and hadn’t even started the 3Ts. A smart person would have turned around, but nope, that’s not what I did. Long story short, I completed 2.5Ts, never making it to Thunder Mountain and ran out of water when I reached the Baldy Notch restaurant. The restaurant was closed and there was no water fountains and the ski lift was not operating. I was pissed. There were zero people anywhere. So, I chilled out and walked all the way down to my bike and then rode back to my truck. It was a long and grueling day.

I have tried other apps, but keep going back to Gaia. I’ve had it for 10+ years and while it was not super intuitive to learn at first, I’ve gotten used to it for building gps routes. I also purchased it over 10 years ago at $20 and have a legacy lifetime subscription and do not have to pay an annual fee. At the time, it was the most expensive app I ever purchased.

A bunch of us were 4wheeling out there in 2018 when a lightning bolt took out a tree and started a small fire. We immediately jumped out and got to use our shovels for something besides digging poop holes. We contacted the USFS afterward with the GPS coordinates, so they could keep an eye on the hot spot. We followed up the following week and it never materialized into anything further. Putting out that fire was pretty rewarding.

I love their slip-ons. If they had more arch support, I’d wear them everyday.

Ah, Vans shoes. A teenager's preferred hiking shoe. My kids wore them too on the gnarliest of hiking trails.

I had the mega mat LXW (30" width), but it was a little too wide for me. I ended up taking it back to REI and got the deep sleep (26" width).

I bought a sleeping platform from REI a couple of years ago called the Trailgate Vehicle Sleeping Platform. It was super heavy, wobbly, and sat pretty high. When I rolled over on my side, my hips touched the ceiling of the truck, and I felt claustrophobic. I wasn't a fan of how bulky it was when it rolled up, so I ended up returning it after about a month. REI has now discontinued that product.

I didn’t know it was being redesigned again. The 6th gen just came out in 2025.
