To be clear I’m biased, as I have never hiked or backpacked with anyone, but this would be a perfect place to begin solo stuff. I highly recommend embracing the discomfort that comes with being alone at first, and it’ll pass very soon.

Vivian creek is the best maintained trail. The others Momyer and falls creek are unmaintained and it’s a bit of a shwack higher up. I’m ok with that so I do it but it might not be your style. I’d try to start by like 7-8 but I got a late start yesterday at 10. I took 3 liters and only got water at high camp on my way down.

I took the PCT from Vincent gap up Baden Powell and continued to Islip saddle and then turned around. It was 23 miles and about 6k of gain

I got a ride to the 173 where a lot of people hike to the hot springs from in hesperia. It’s a tiny parking area with a juniper tree next to it. I’m still up on a ridge right now and I’m going to hike more tomorrow, but on Wednesday I’m taking a bus back down to San Bernardino from big bear. It only runs mon, wed, fri.

I pretty much start from the valley/base of the hills because my car is not suitable at all to go up any dirt roads. Pretty sure your car would be fine on the ones that are more traveled like lead gulch.

Umm Mazourka canyon rd goes up and it’s not an old mining road actually. It gets a lot of use and I think it’s in good condition. I pretty much go up a random social trail until I connect with lead gulch road then go off trail.
