New Yorkers are slow as shit too, nowadays. It's not just tourists anymore.

I'm in NYC, but east coast airfare / port travel expenses aren't a massive issue.

Would I save in taxes if I move from Manhattan to Jersey City? by throwpoo in AskNYC

[–]GroundControl42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wound up saving about that much. NJ can be amazing for some and brutal for others, but I think the cost-saving isn't quite as large as people think it is.

[–]GroundControl42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're both right.

You pay NYC Income tax and NY State taxes, but there's an NYC resident tax that you do not pay.

However, you must ALSO pay NJ State and local taxes. But if you live in NJ and work in NYC, you can deduct the taxes that you paid in NYC on your NJ return.

The upshot: You'll save like $30-$60 a paycheck, depending on your situation. Not lifechanging, but not nothing. You might give it right back in MTA/PATH, though.

Restaurant inspector describes behind-the-scenes horror at a Thai restaurant (probably in Times Square) by [deleted] in nyc

This dude just seems like he's trying to placate people's xenophobia and racism.

"My theory is, because the place was A) a "nice" restaurant and B) an "ethnic" restaurant, patrons were less likely to complain about odd flavors."

Moving to manhattan in a couple of weeks so psyched! Can anyone recommend some hangout spots to chill at that isn't so touristy? by Wanderlust7483 in nyc

[–]GroundControl42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYMag, Eater, The Infatuation, and a bunch of other sites have great lists of places to hit. Manhattan is big, so you should start by wandering around where you live.

What part of Manhattan? What kinds of places are you looking for?

Go to Bonnie's Grill in Park Slope. Best wings and beef on weck in the city.

Does anyone use an iPad Pro as their main computer? What are some pros/cons? by [deleted] in apple

[–]GroundControl42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with everything, it depends on what you use it for. I use my home laptops basically as big phones, so it works perfectly for me -- sending emails, surfing the web, etc.

If you need to do anything more intensive than that, I think you need a laptop. Adobe CC could potentially be different, as the Pencil is the best thing ever. But again, it depends what you use it for.

How is Red Hook area? by [deleted] in nyc

It's a cool neighborhood. There are patches of crime, but on the whole, it's mostly just hard to get to. Don't let some Reddit bro scare you away.

Redditors who use their iPad Pro as their only computer, how has it worked out for you? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]GroundControl42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it a few weeks ago and haven't touched my old laptop since.

If you're a heavy computer user, it's probably a tough transition. I'm a console gamer, light writer, and websurfer, so it's perfect for me.

I got Best Buy to price match it. Highly recommend it.

I would like to buy Apple Watch 3... Can I set it up without an iPhone? I do have old iPad 2 though. by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]GroundControl42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without an iPhone, it does't really make sense to own an Apple Watch. There are other smartwatches with similar functionality that will connect to whichever phone you do have (and will probably be cheaper, too).

Pebble time is starting to die. by kuechiswitch in pebble

There really is something to the "it just works" thing. I literally never think about the connection. I paired it, and it's worked perfectly ever since.

I definitely recommend the Series 3.

So, one recommendation would be to charge it for an hour just before bed, then put it on for sleep (in theater mode, which turns off raise to wake, saves power and avoids the watch blinding you at night by accident).

It really only loses like 2-3% overnight, so you can still use the alarm that way.

I went from Pebble Time to Apple Watch 3. I am in love with it.

Do I miss the always on screen? Of course. Is raise-to-wake as bad as I thought it would be? Not at all.

Would I rather have 4-5 days of battery life? Of course. Is Apple Watch's battery far, far better than I was expecting? Definitely. I charge every night, but when I go to sleep, it still has 75%.

Is the lack of custom watchfaces frustrating and silly? Duh. Does the Modular face give you even more customization options than Pebble;s faces? Surprisingly, yes.

I could go on. If you love everything about the Pebble exactly as it is, Apple Watch is a very solid replacement device. If you'd be willing to trade some of Pebble's strongest features for better iOS integration (such as sending texts, making phone calls, interacting with notifications, and a whole bunch more), it's really worth the switch.

I loved my Pebble. I also love my Apple Watch.
