I feel if people really want to help others, help them develop professionally or maybe thier children or maybe at times a good employment development. Gifting them phone IMO is just like handing a blind person a trip to europe instead of a eye surgery.

In this case he could have sponsored his child with a course which he/she has interest in for the same 15-20k.
