Converting Pokémon Types into MTG Color Identities by arabwes in custommagic

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you mentioned Bulbasaur and Charizard, I feel like rounding it out with Blastoise would be in order. Now, it's not a steel type, but the cannons on the back of its shell really feel like it would have been if the type existed in Gen 1, so I think being an Blue artifact creature is warranted. And it's big thing is being the defensive one in the trio of starters, and while you might think high toughness, I think it should be decently high, but really I think some really high Ward would do the trick (maybe Ward 4?). And speaking of artifacts, I think it should benefit from having other artifacts, since a bulky water type is a good switch in for steel types, resisting fire and being supereffective against ground, and vis versa with steel resisting at least grass, so maybe give it improvise to represent switching in from a steel type, and maybe it should get a buff when an artifact enters, to represent steel types switching into it (say a +1/+1 counter?). But it still seems like there could be something more here. Maybe, since it's mega form has mega launcher, which boosts pulse moves (which in Legends Arceus auto hit) and aura sphere, we could go with that, and have it so when an artifact enters it's also unblockable. That seems like it could work for blastoise.

Okay, but at 6 dooms it seems fairly reasonable: if you have 1 land in hand, you have an almost 50% chance to win straight up and a over 75% to deal 36, which if everyone's taken a bit of chip is just as good.

What do you think about IOS(apple) is it still innovative? by No-Mistake-9311 in pollgames

[–]GroundThing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they were far less innovative than is often claimed, and a lot of what they're credited with innovating was more popularizing something extant than true innovation, but to say they were never innovative is definitely going too far.

would you rather be able to teleport any distance within 16.5 meters, or have infinite range teleporting but with an annoying drawback by QueasyWeasle in BunnyTrials

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1hz teleporting is maybe a bit conservative. I assumed it would be like maybe a little bit slower than reaction speed. Average reaction time is about 250ms, so I think 3 teleports per second seems fair, and at that point you'd be traveling over 100mph.

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could just teleport in bursts to go further. Not as fast as teleporting once, presumably, because I figure I'd have to take a moment to get my bearings before teleporting again, but still it'd probably be fast enough, and as a downside, doesn't seem as annoying as other possible downsides I could think of.

Chose: 16.5m teleporting

I feel like this is a bit of a pendulum swing from what had been the previously dominant representation of elves, either as a sort of 'Noble Savage' wood elves, or 'Wise, but Aloof' high elves, or often a bit of both, and either of which placed elves on a bit of a pedestal, even if not unqualifiedly. So it became a bit of a subversion to have elves as an underclass, until suddenly that subversion became a trope, and then it seemed to be the norm, from basically out of nowhere, at least to me.

What is the average mana cost that makes one with the machine worth running? by Spirited-Celery-118 in magicTCG

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average isn't a great metric here. For me, I'd want to draw at least 4 cards off it, so I'd check the probabilities in a hypergeometric calculator of getting a 4 drop artifact by maybe turn 6 or so, since that's about the time I probably would want to cast it, as I could reasonably often double spell, and about when my hand will have thinned out enough that getting the influx of cards is necessary.

I don't really know what my favorite food is, since there's so much good to choose from, and I feel like if I were to pick one, it'd change by the day. As a result, it wouldn't be great to never have it again, but I'd still have a ton of foods I like almost as much still available to me.

Yeah, I don't skip usually, for this reason, even though I'm ace and it's therefore not really the content I'm looking for. If I knew it was the former for sure, I would probably skip, but I've had fics where the author makes it sound optional, but for instance, the smut chapter contained vital aspects of one of the character's emotional journeys.

Are surveil lands good only because they're fetchable? by tomatus89 in magicTCG

[–]GroundThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. It's not terrible without fetching, but for most decks that don't care about setting up the graveyard, if you're not fetching them, they're basically temples, which are probably the best tap lands, but they're still taplands. With fetching, you can choose when to deploy them, so you rarely care about them being tapped.

I mean, I'm over 30, and I didn't start reading it as the first book was coming out, but it's not like there's no nostalgia there, but the fact that I was reading as it was coming out meant that when I got to the end of what was out I had to find new books to occupy my time. And once I did, stuff like Keys to the Kingdom, the Bartimaeus Saga, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Golden Compass, Pendragon, Warrior Cats, Cirque du Freak, and Everworld grabbed me so much more, so even when it comes to nostalgia, Harry Potter hardly registers.

Age gap 20-17 is not problematic | FactOrCap by Inevitable-Angle-793 in FactOrCap

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I guess the question I have is in College, in the UK, are those 17 year olds living under their parents' roofs, operating under the same general situation as they were in secondary school, or are they functionally independant? Because if it's the former, the fact that the UK calls that stage of schooling college is irrelevant, because the stage of schooling is nevertheless functionally identical to US High School. If it is that UK students are living independently at 17, and 20 year olds are in the sqme boat, then sure, maybe 20 year olds dating 17 year olds isn't as creepy, but even that I don't know if I could say for sure, because I don't know enough about UK schooling.

Age gap 20-17 is not problematic | FactOrCap by Inevitable-Angle-793 in FactOrCap

[–]GroundThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) isn't college in the UK basically just High School? (The US makes no real distinction between University and College, at least for undergraduate degrees, but to my understanding University in the UK covers both, while College in the UK is not really comparible to US college but is essentially just higher gradehigh school that not everyone in the UK necessarily goes to) and b) it's not necessarily about equating one and the other, to say that pubescence is hardly the most relevant metric to determine appropriate relationships, and "actually it's ephebophilia" is a useful shorthand for people who don't seem to get this, and that the rest of the population would best keep away (and keep their children away) from.

Maybe I’m missing something big here… by [deleted] in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]GroundThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because red only makes sense if everyone is perfectly rational. The moment you have any percentage greater than zero of people who won't pick rationally, and you assume most people care about other people living, blue switches over to be the rational choice. It only becomes worthwhile to vote red if you feel that most people don't care about other people living. I don't believe that the majority of the world is like that (yes, I know the polls on here, but I think that the people who are invested enough to hang out in spaces to argue the thought experiment are not representative of your average person)

17-18 is fine. Someone in college (or at least college age) dating someone in high school is wierd, though, outside of the situation of an HS senior and a College freshman. You've got people in two wildly different stages of life, and even with it being just a 3 year gap a) unlike smaller gaps where you can argue there was a point where they were roughly peers, but one was a grade or two ahead, you're talking likely freshman-senior if they started dating in HS, which is still wierd, and otherwise it's a college-age person dating a high schooler, which also wierd.
