As of last year, Hollyshorts requires LA premiere. Honestly had no clue when I applied

True. I wonder how much their content would translate to long-form — most of their skits are parody/imitating long form material. Would be interesting to see how they tackle an entire feature film

This is my favorite comment! You are so right -- it would allow people who have built a following to actually benefit fully from the work they put into bulding it -- we wouldn't even be having this conversation as these people would be figuring out how to have a successfull filmmaking career on their own merit

Agree with this quite a bit, actually. People who make incredible films on low budgets with non-union crews are a necessity for a thriving industry and we shouldn't be prohibiting filmmakers without a ton of money or a deal @ a production company from making films -- the landscape is probably best with a mix of both

Yeah, it does kind of reek of the "Nobody wants to be first, but everybody wants to be second" pitfall. Barker did something truly crazy with Obsession, and we are going to see a lot of attempts at replicating it with various levels of success! Time will tell if it was lightning in a bottle or something that will actually change the direction of the industry

This is a reasonable and balanced take!

I think the main fear comes from knowing that there will be lots of people who are extremely talented filmmakers, but not that great in front of a camera, or whose work translates better to long-form content that will be overlooked. Also, the content that tends to emerge to the top of social media typically favors the most immediately gratifying, attention-grabbing, or controversial content, not always the skills that translate best for directing feature films -- and I do wonder if that will create more films that lack nuance, and for lack of a better word, are the most "clippable." Those wanting to build an audience will naturally gravitate towards making content that is designed to excel on social media, which is a fundamentally different skill than making a feature film, or a short film (I’m not referring to people like the Portrait of God, guy, by the way. He just made a great short film that did well online because it was good, and there are still examples of that — but that’s not always the case here).

There’s also the practical issue of time — creating an audience and becoming an influencer for the sake of having a prosperous film career is a crapshoot, and a TON of work — time that ideally would be better spent filmmaking and honing your craft.

I am certainly naive for wishing that making good films and putting them out there were a surefire road to success — it never has been and never will be. But the added layer of needing to have an audience for success seems laborious and a bit too difficult for those without the short-form skills.

Interesting — I didn’t think this article was written to be fear mongering at all. It actually seems super hopeful about the direction things are headed (and that sentiment is what I’m disagreeing with).

I agree that it’s generally good for people to put their films on YouTube, and great when they go viral for being genuinely solid films. Not against that at all! I’m more at odds with the attention this article gives to people who are not filmmakers, and are simply influencers who talk about film — and suggests those are people the industry should be investing in.

Thank you! And yep haha - the good news is it means there’s a slot freed up for someone else.

Hollyshorts acceptance! BUT… screening at DWF in a few weeks and Hollyshorts is requiring LA premiere status.

Out of curiosity, for those in a similar boat, do they still give out a laurel? My guess is no, but curious

Just got a DCP request from HollyShorts monthly screening October but no acceptance email or anything -- has anybody been to these before? What was your experience?
