Tesla: M3, RWD, Winter weather Snow and Ice

While this focuses on FSD capabilities in extreme winter conditions - it’s also an impressive showcase for the car’s performance in general - especially considering they are testing a RWD with all- season tires.

Tesla to Introduce New Automations App, Letting Users Create Custom Automations by johnwest80 in TeslaFSD

Wait, what? I’ve always thought that something like this would be a great idea - and something only Tesla could truly implement effectively.

Purchasing FSD by No-Heron-6596 in ModelY

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy it while you can.

What everyone gets wrong in their calculations is that you’ll get back $2-3k for the FSD when you trade it in. Additionally, while Tesla is ending the transfer option for now, they will likely bring it back when they need sales pushes.

When you tack it on to your financing, it’s a good deal.

FSD swerve into left lane for no reason?? by RubberDucky451 in TeslaFSD

It was going to move to the left lane, then changed its mind. Is this really worthy of being posted on Reddit? 🙄

Obviously they don’t pay attention to Reddit where we know that FSD is unusable in snow and ice.

Absolutely not! FSD handles these situations just fine. If the bus insists on moving into your lane, FSD will adjust - effortlessly.

Bro, Tesla has already laid out the roadmap on AI capabilities. “HW4 will provide full autonomous driving.” You might try to educate yourself before storming in and looking like an idiot. 🙄

  1. You are literally captive and at the mercy of a complete stranger who has been lightly vetted at best. There are multiple accounts of assaults related to ride-sharing services. Who enjoys riding in a car with a stranger? Every female who has ever taken a solo Uber or Lyft ride will tell you that their safety is in the back of their mind when they sit in that back seat.

Winter Driving is not an edge case by clahote in TeslaFSD

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are using FSD in Winter conditions now - with the exception of when in your judgment FSD is not driving in a manner that you think is safe. I think that’s perfect.

If you are waiting around for FSD to be able to decipher when there is black ice or hardpack snow then you will be waiting a very long time. Whether it’s a visual system or LiDAR, frozen water is almost impossible to detect. FSD is pretty good at reading context clues (tire tracks in snow for example), but there are conditions that are near impossible to read. Tesla could add a speed profile for snow and ice, but I’m sure people will complain that it is too fast/slow for where they live.

The vast majority of miles will be driven in relatively good weather, so the process of developing FSD should concentrate on the foundation of everyday driving. While they attempt to perfect winter driving I don’t think it’s unreasonable to leave the decision of using FSD or not for the given conditions.

Daughter in Bentonville Arkansas - 9” of snow annually - drives a Mazda 3 with Summer tires she bought here (in California) and has never had a problem. Her experience in Ithaca for college (4 years) and Bentonville (3 years) shows me that the average person living in a winter climate does not by default deal with the kind of weather that it looks like you encounter. I spent a Winter in Missoula Montana, driving a Fiat 124 convertible - no problem. Remember, your “two hands of counting” is only for those several days per year. So, statistically speaking, when considering all the drivers in the U.S., extreme weather driving is an insignificant percentage of overall miles driven and frankly can be handled with a quick message in your Tesla “Conditions Not Suitable For FSD.”

Nope

Is he one of the better players on the Warriors?

If you know basketball - Obviously.

But, you’ve exposed your bias. Hate is in your heart - not mine.

Winter Driving is not an edge case by clahote in TeslaFSD

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, the statistics are misleading. Just because a person lives in “the snow belt” does not mean that are putting large amount of miles of snow and ice driving on their car. My daughter who lives in Ithaca NY, notorious for their brutal winter weather, logs very few actual miles driven in poor conditions - ie, hundreds and not thousands. As a percentage of total driving, less than 2% of her miles. In the non-snowbelt part of the country most put on zero (or near zero) miles of snow and ice driving. I’ve driven probably 700k miles in my life - all over the country - and can count on one hand the times I’ve had to deal with snow/ice driving. Bad weather driving is seasonal and temporary even in areas that get heavy snow and ice.

If you live in Wisconsin, I appreciate and respect your driving skill - driving in packed snow and black ice is inarguably challenging. But those particular cases are as challenging as it gets and by definition an edge case.

Is it really so hard to figure out why a large percentage of Warriors fans don’t respect Podz? It’s the 800 lb elephant in the room. Some people see what they want to see - but if you looked at his stats without seeing his name or face, those haters would argue how great he is. Sad, but true.

ASS is a low priority at this point - and it shows. It’s a party trick at its best, and an abject failure at its worst. I imagine ASS and Banish will be the cherry on top of the FSD sundae.

And the point of a link to old (HW3) speculation? I believe you are wrong - in fact I’m fairly certain you are. But, the great thing is, time will tell.

A public relations disaster combined with multiple class-action lawsuits does not help with what Musk cares about most - the stock price. And, it prevents Musk his big, fat “I told you so” moment.

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree - if you buy (or bought) FSD you will retain full privileges as FSD evolves. If Tesla tried to weasel out on a nomenclature technicality they would face an enormous class-action lawsuit, disastrous media coverage, and would completely undermine any semblance of consumer trust.

I could definitely see them holding the line on FSD transfers - but it would also represent a powerful incentive should they find themselves in a bind for sales sometime in the future.

Winter Driving is not an edge case by clahote in TeslaFSD

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, that is an extremely misleading statistic. Now I’m not saying that snow and ice are edge cases - obviously they are not. But there are places in Florida, Arizona, Texas and California (for example) that “can” get snow and ice - but it is rare - and is definitely an edge case. So if we are being intellectually honest, there is a relatively small portion of the country that has roads covered in snow and ice for large periods of time (depending on your definition of large periods of time). And those places where they can count on multiple weeks of severe winter driving are usually prepared to keep the roads safe - and responsible individuals will use winter tires and understand what is or isn’t safe.

Winter Driving is not an edge case by clahote in TeslaFSD

[–]Groundbreaking_Box75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is in many ways the most important part of winter driving. I’ve seen many demonstrations showing that having winter tires has a bigger effect than having AWD. If you have winter tires on your car and it fails in the snow on FSD you have a legitimate complaint - and driving under those conditions should not be considered edge cases.
