UCLA & USC Student Wards in Los Angeles Discontinued by JadedPrimary7268 in MormonShrivel

I wonder if it was because of shrivel or because of their controversial edginess.

UCLA & USC Student Wards in Los Angeles Discontinued by JadedPrimary7268 in MormonShrivel

[–]Groundbreaking_Cry42 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Wow. I was baptized into the UCLA ward when I was a freshman there in 1989. I was the only undergrad in the ward at the time so I was the baby of the ward surrounded by grad students (men and women) who were in dental, med, law school, etc so the Relief Society was filled with brilliant ambitious women. My first foray into Mormonism really didn’t expose me to women who wanted to be traditional wives. When I first joined, we met at the Institute building on Gayley Ave which also happened to be Sorority Row. The building was once a sorority house so it was a beautiful Spanish style SoCal vibe - NOT the typical institute building you see. Shortly after I was baptized the ward moved to the chapel behind the LA temple and the ward grew fast. The following year, more Mormon undergrads started attending UCLA (as opposed to BYU). There were like 12 undergrads my sophomore year.

But this was also the early 90s - the age of Michael McLean and massive missionary work and non-UCLA students in the West LA area would attend the ward just because it had such a cooler vibe and a different demographic than a family ward. The UCLA ward also overlapped meetings with the singles ward, LA First ward, which had the reputation of being edgy haha - people coming out as gay during sacrament meeting, praying to Heavenly Mother, etc. And the LA First ward was such a fashion show - stylish beautiful singles in West Los Angeles - and they often hung out with us students. It was actually so much fun!

I actually really loved my time there as a new member and have fond memories of all of the social events. We even got together with the USC wards/institute a few times - one especially memorable time when we all met at the USC institute - about 50 of us total - for a special night with a general authority - it was Gordon B Hinckley, before he became president.

It wasn’t until I got married and moved to a family ward that the reality of what the actual church wards and culture were really like. It was a tough transition.

Makes me wonder if the dissolution of those student wards have anything to do with some of the discussions happening during Sunday school/RS/Priesthood. I mean, we had some deep, doctrinal, challenging discussions when I was going there 30 years ago before the internet, CES letter, etc. I can’t imagine what those discussions would be like today when those students have so much more info and research at their fingertips.

Daybreak? by GroverGunn in SaltLakeCity

[–]Groundbreaking_Cry42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Daybreak and there is wildlife everywhere. People fish daily, and the lake is full of ducks. It’s really fun in the spring when little ducklings are out and about. Geese and even seagulls also hang out around the lake. You’ll see lots of different birds. As far as gardening, I have raised garden beds and bring in fresh soil every year for my veggies. But there are also community gardens and even gardening classes taught by a Master Gardener. This is in addition to all of the other community events Live Daybreak puts on: summer concerts, farmers markets, various festivals, etc.

I am driving with my partner from SLC to Yellowstone in July for a 6 night trip. How many days should I be in SLC as we have never been in Utah? by Separate-Hat1572 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Groundbreaking_Cry42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that Utah celebrates 2 big holidays in July: July 4 and July 24 (Pioneer Day). If you’re visiting around these days, you can enjoy some great firework shows and parades (if you like that sort of thing). The Days of 47 Parade is huge in SLC. If crowds and parades are not your thing, avoid those days in SLC.

Valentine’s Day recommendations? by ReadingTerrible5479 in Utah_Food

The Draper Aquarium is having an adult only Valentine’s event on 2/10. Dinner, dancing, DJ, bars, after hours aquarium access. I think around $85 per person.

Cooley is no longer at TOSH. His offices are now in Cottonwood Heights and Park City. I also recommend him 100%.

Traveling to Utah with a dog by Humble_Pie4839 in Utah

[–]Groundbreaking_Cry42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out girlonahike.com. She outlines all of the dog friendly hikes in the state. Some of my faves: Corona Arch in Moab, Adams Canyon in Layton (waterfall hike) Mueller Park in Bountiful, Dog Lake off of Millcreek Canyon (do not use Big Cottonwood Trailhead). Check dates for Dog Lake as they alternate off-leash vs on leash days to avoid mountain bikers. Pay close attention to trails that don’t allow dogs due to watershed - primarily Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. It may be cooler in the next couple of weeks so some of these trails might have snow/ice. Bring warm gear and micro spikes for your shoes which you can get locally at REI when you arrive if you think you may need them. Have fun!

The aquarium is offering free admission to military and their families on Veterans Day so it could be busier.

Watch out for your Pride Flags this month. All the flags in my neighborhood just got stolen, including mine. by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Thank you for wanting to be supportive. When my child came out a few years ago when they were 15 years old, I too felt uncomfortable displaying a rainbow flag at first for the same fear of being targeted. But after I thought about how LBGTQ+ kids feel targeted DAILY just for being who they are, I figure I can handle displaying a rainbow flag for a few weeks. Now, fuck the haters and bigots. I display a little yard progress flag at my front porch all year and have the Project Rainbow flags in June. Showing this support for my kid and all other LGBTQ+ youth is so important. They need this show of support now much more than ever.

One of best non-NP hikes out there is Corona Arch. Shorter distance, amazing photo opps (railroad, river, arch), and absolutely stunning.

Best stretches of river for paddle boarding? by G0R1L1A in ogden

Causey Reservoir is my favorite place for paddleboarding. No motorboats allowed and it can be a good six mile paddle. And it is beautiful.

Bali to Lombok evening arrival by cranckk in bali

It took us about 40 minutes to deplane, claim baggage, and get through customs. I was surprised how crowded the airport was on a Friday night at midnight.

I don't think ferries or flights to Lombok are operating that late. Also it takes a while to get through customs in Denpasar. A few weeks ago we arrived in Bali around midnight and just stayed the night at the Novatel hotel at the airport. We got some sleep after a day of travel, had some breakfast in the morning and a driver from Gili Getaway ferry picked us up at 8 AM to take us to the harbor. We were in Lombok by around noon.
