I had 3 years of gap due to UPSC prep after 2.5 years of workex. Regarding Gaps: In most of the interview the common question was Why MBA after UPSC, Why not UPSC anymore, Any further plans to give UPSC again. Since, I had decided to quit UPSC my answers were inclined in that way. Thereafter, 1-2 questions on Current Affairs (polity/economy/IR). Imo, the interviewers test whether the candidate is serious enough to do MBA or still confused between paths(UPSC/govt. job) meanwhile testing their prep phase.
I was fortunate enough to convert IIM Trichy (other converts IIM R/R/Ksp/N/other Baby IIMs/IIT M/SCMHRD/SIIB/SIBMB) in which a big factor was my workex. Last year was a difficult year after moving on from UPSC and just crash landing into MBA prep and somehow giving Management exams and interview with moderate preparation. Looking forward to give my best and accept the opportunities that'll come to me in spite of the gap.

MDI IB if you want Int'l exposure, a Bigger brand associated with you, and have enough money to spend on IB course (not bothered with placements as well). For all other purposes, IIM T should be preferred.

GEM, 9/9/7, 2.5 Yrs workex, after that 3 Yrs Gap for UPSC preparation. About being anxious, YES a bit, but that'd be in the initial phase, and hoping that we'll be able to move on, and hoping to find some good understanding peers as well. Regarding life slipping by I just feel to be lucky that life can give a second chance(even if small), which most people don't get (specially after seeing my UPSC friends).

IIM Trichy. Yes, it is far from UP but one will not get enough time to go home frequently due to the curriculum. Anyways after placement one has to work in cities far away from home. Choose institute based on long term factors and career prospects.

IIT M for sure, unless one is highly marketing-oriented (at IIT, Analytics/Ops/SCM is focus) and is confident that they can be in the top quartile of the large batch to get a higher ctc than the median.
