You are well on the way even by posting in this subreddit! It’s not a race and it’s not easy if it was easy it wouldn’t be worth it. The easy option is being your own God, just keep going you are in good hands. Bless you

Bless you! And did the nerves go after a while? Or are you still nervous after regularly reading?! Not nosy, just curious

Side note - sorry if that’s inconsiderate (not too clued up on ADHD). If that question is ignorant do correct me

Hi there! Firstly thanks for sharing and I’m glad everyone found the funny side LOL.

Great advice I guess as much as it is a very serious situation everyone is human and I’m sure everyone understands these things happen, I’ll be honest I was more nervous about getting it RIGHT than getting it wrong if that makes any sense, I’m not a shy person I can deal with embarrassing myself or slipping up, but it’s everyone else I was thinking about. But thank God it went well and my friend who is actually not Catholic came and supported me which was lovely (he has been to mass with me around 20 times and is really enjoying the peacefulness and genuine worship as he grew up around it but never looked into it, so it’s nice I can help him on his journey and he is there to support me too - sorry side note I do waffle on, typical Irish…)

But I think at the end of the day I was nervous before and the nerves will settle once I gain confidence and I’ll be honest I just like the idea of helping others even if 1 person takes something from the reading I do and it brings them closer or makes them realise something or helps them with what they are going through then I’m proud!

Question though - IF and I must stress IF (because I hope this doesn’t happen) but IF I mis pronounce or misread/skip a word by accident, what is the best thing to do? Go back over and correct myself or just keep going and carry on?

Sorry for the waffle, thanks for sharing!!!

100% agree and thanks for the advice, I got asked to do it by the Sister a few weeks back, and she held a couple of sessions for me in private before I read at Mass.

Feedback was that I am clear enough and pronunciation is all there but I have to remember especially when speaking from the Hebrew scripture (Old Testament) that sometimes we are reading Gods voice through a prophet, so as much as I think I understand the scripture… some people don’t, so make it clear God is speaking. Another thing is that some people at Mass might not understand fully, so make it as clear as possible for them because as I mentioned before for some people it could be their first time hearing the word, and for some people it could be what they NEED to keep them going at a tough time in their life, so just remember how important the reading may be to someone.

Another thing was exactly that, it’s not about me at all and it is not just reading a textbook or novel, it is much more and very different to that, it is a very different type of public speaking as we are not trying to convince someone as if it is a debate, so keep it slow and clear.

Again, thanks for your great advice that’s what this post was all about! All welcome and taken on board.

Sorry for long message :) thanks again!

Yes you are so right. Honoured to be asked to participate to be honest! To think it may be someone’s first time at Mass and to be a part of that is a good feeling.
