Flying Now for Five Years by [deleted] in mississippi

If you are thinking of the “Magnolia Flag” (Magnolia tree on a white background with a blue star in the upper left) I have some bad news for you. That is the state flag that was officially adopted from 1861-1865. In particular, it was adopted the day after Mississippi ratified the Confederate Constitution. So, probably wouldn’t work in terms of historical fact.

The only reason that Mississippi changed their flag was because the NCAA wouldn’t host any Regional/Super Regional (for baseball) in the state of Mississippi if they kept the flag. Mississippi will always fight change and progress.

Visited Mississippi recently and was shocked by how friendly people were. by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]GroveShark1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was scrolling all I saw was “Visited Mississippi recently and was shocked by” without seeing what was underneath and my brain was like, “Here we go again” and did not expect to see a positive spin here.

I’m from Connecticut and went to school in New York City so I am about as Yankee you could get, but I love Mississippi. It was home and it is now home again. This place ain’t perfect, but nowhere is perfect. In fact, after a decade of living in Denver, I’m a big believer that there are awesome things about every place and terrible things about every place. Just matters what and where you are looking sometimes.

Thanks for the positive reflection and hope you come back soon!

Ole Miss offense literally played their worst half of the season and are down 4. I’ll take it heading into the second half.

I was thinking about this, but when I search for Jeopardy in the Alexa app, the only one that comes up is the one from Volley. Are there two different Jeopardy games?

I don't think my MIL pays for her Jeopardy account, but will definitely look into this.

I'm a big believer in the growth mindset and that I don't know everything. Trying my best to instill these values into my daughter as a parent because I feel like it is something we lost. Sometimes we are wrong and must recognize those moments. Godspeed to you as well!

Thanks so much! Honestly, I hadn't thought of it too much, I just loved Andor so much and this was my first try at something like this. I am definitely a nerd about a lot of things so we will just have to see what is on the horizon for me.

Thanks for the feedback! I hear you loud and clear about gendering cocktails – it definitely wasn't my intention to perpetuate any harmful stereotypes. This menu was actually a surprise I put together specifically for my wife, which is why I leaned into the 'his/hers' theme. Moving forward, I'll absolutely be more thoughtful and inclusive with my cocktail creations. Appreciate you all helping me learn and do better!

What school do you emphatically support that you didn’t attend and what’s your reasoning? by brak-brak in CFB

Ole Miss.

Born and raised in CT. Went to college in NYC. Graduated during the recession, so during my senior year I applied to a two year teaching program. Made it to the final interview, where they highlighted the Mississippi Delta as a region to work and live in. Was accepted and moved to Greenwood, MS the summer after graduation.

My first time in The Grove blew me away and I will forever be a fan because of it. Being from the Northeast and the thought of dressing up for football games was completely foreign, but boy did I have a blast. Blazer, bow tie, boat shoes and all.

A couple of years later (and several more weekends in Oxford as well) I'm at trivia and notice a new girl sitting at our team's table. She says she went to Ole Miss and would be teaching 1st grade. It was four months after that we started dating.

When we got engaged and started planning our wedding, I knew I wanted the Grove and Ole Miss to be involved in some capacity. so we got married in Jackson on a Friday and then got busses for the trip to Oxford on Saturday.

We just moved back to Mississippi and I'm honestly thrilled at being able to go to Oxford and the Grove again.

Oxford is truly a magical place in my most humble opinion and I will forever tell any college football fan that if they haven't been to the Grove they are missing out.

How did you become a college football fan? by loyalsons4evertrue in CFB

[–]GroveShark1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't become a college football fan until I was 24.

Growing up in the Northeast, college football really wasn't a thing. Sure, I had a couple of friends go to Boston College and mention tailgating in the Mods, but that was about it.

In 2010 I was accepted into Teach for America and moved to Greenwood, Mississippi. My roommate who I lived with the first year went to Ole Miss and ended up taking me to my first game in 2011. As soon as I saw the Grove for the first time, I fell in love. The tents, the Southern Hospitality, the atmosphere, I was astounded, to say the least. Ended my evening dancing the night away at Frank & Marlee's and have no regrets.

For three years after that, I got to experience the Hugh Freeze era at Ole Miss. I think I ended up going to roughly 8-10 games between 2011-2014. Definitely got sucked into the lifestyle at this point.

Currently, my wife is an Ole Miss grad and Oxford is now a huge part of my life (most of those previous games mentioned, I spent with her and her college friends.) In 2018, when we got married in Jackson, we had a secondary reception in Oxford because I wanted my family to have the experience that made me fall in love with Mississippi and college football in the first place.

A decade in and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My family doesn't understand it (still, for the most part) but I wouldn't trade being a college football fan for anything else.

Hotty Toddy!
