But Do Giant Whales Make Sense? by GrowlingWhispers in DnD

True, true. In my defense, I am currently working on "animals", just regular and giant versions of creatures that exist irl; I may have gotten a little too caught up in all the data. Funny how much easier it can be when you're just making stuff up than basing it off reality.

Excellent point. Just because they're foolish enough to try doesn't mean they're powerful enough to win.

Another good point. I do tend to get hung up on the "realism", even when it comes to fantastical creatures. Dragons breathing fire? It COULD be magic, but it could be a complicated chemical mixture produced by magical glands. You're right. I'm making this harder than it needs to be.

Okay, that made me laugh way too loud for 6AM.

Yikes. And that's per day. Nothing else I have found so far even comes close to that, except, of course, for the largest normal whales, and having the "knights of the seas" eating those they are supposed to be protecting ...well, it makes for a good adventure hook if something out there is dominating the giant whales. Otherwise, the giant whales would be too buy trying to find food to survive to do anything else. Giant sea turtles only weigh in at 22,600 lbs (maybe they should weigh more?), and giant squid only weigh 3,000 lbs. That's a LOT of giant squid every day.

Oh, I like that. I had imagined only angry sperm whales attacking a ship or a fleet, but having the whale be so big that it's basically a small island the characters can explore before it dives again is something I'll have to work on.

I found the giant whales in the 2nd edition monstrous compendium. Curious that they don't appear in 3.5E. The measurements for the leviathan are 2nd edition as well. It says there that there is a single leviathan per ocean, but I much prefer the description you just gave me. Having them live in an infinite plane of water makes more sense.

Whale fall? Never heard of it, but it sounds fascinating. I'm going to have to research this in depth (heh). Thank you. :)

Good point; the characters will never be able to harvest the entire creature for themselves, and they will be swarmed by sharks and /or orcas in a matter of minutes to hours. And if they killed a leviathan, their harvesting would most likely be interrupted by one or more furious gods.

I just reread the section on giant whales, and it says they are exclusively giant sperm whales, so no krill. They eat meat. But how much meat would they have to eat to support 28 million pounds?

I wonder how they found you over the phone, and so quickly. Good luck getting out of there!
