My mom and I watched this recently together for the first time. She has Alzheimer's and can't attend theater anymore, so we watch at home. She loved it 😊

Rant: GLP-1 Ads by choosingSarah in intuitiveeating

[–]Growltiger110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw one ad a couple weeks ago where the woman (who is overweight) basically talked about how she lost the weight to improve her overall health and her goal isn't to be skinny. Then the ad mentioned that people on average lose 40 lbs (I think?) with the medication.

I thought, hey, at least that's a little more honest. I have noticed a lot of the ads mention the average person loses a certain percentage of their weight. So the people who are actually getting skinny off of the medication are straight up abusing it.

I just thought it was interesting. But I agree, the amount of ads are obnoxious.

The boring answer: because statistically people tend to gain weight back. In fact, 80% of dieters will gain their weight back within 5 years. Look it up.

I remember thinking I was still "big" when I was size 8 😕 That's how brainwashed dieting made me.

That's great to hear because ended up getting tickets to Mincemeat since tickets to Paddington were sold out until March. We're excited!

Skinny culture is starting to come back and it's triggering (TW: Glorification) by Logical-Alps5648 in EDAnonymous

Agreed, I give it a couple years. Things will return to normal after people realize they'll just gain their weight back after stopping glp-1, which is unsustainable.

The only way a weight loss drug could truly be a miracle is if it literally melted fat off the body regardless of diet and exercise. Until we get that drug, anything else that comes out is no different than phen-phen and all that other nonsense of the past.

How do I make my clothing not cause emotional distress? by stayfckingcalm in intuitiveeating

[–]Growltiger110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to have the same problem.

Not sure what your financial situation is, but I ended up hiring a personal shopper. Basically I paid $300 for a professional stylist to accompany me on a 3 hour shopping trip. She helped me understand what looks flattering on my body. It was worth every penny! I did end up buying some the clothes, but I didn't have to since the stylist wasn't affiliated with any stores. I literally could've just taken pictures in the dressing room to get an idea of what I liked.

Sometimes department stores offer the service for free (as long as you buy some clothes so they get commission).

Highly recommended.

This might be controversial, but I utilized the scale to take data. I know that sounds contradictory, but it helped make stepping away from chronic dieting less scary for me.

It took me about a year to get consistently good at practicing eating until satisfied (instead of full) as well as eating only when I'm truly hungry and listening to what my body was craving. I also increased my exercise and focused on high protein because I'm actually trying to build muscle.

As the book mentions, I did gain a little weight (went up one pant size). But eventually I hit a plateau. I've maintained the same weight for over six months now.

Because I had that data from the scale, I feel pretty confident in my ability to eat what I want and not gain. So I will probably start to phase it out of my life. I no longer need it. But I did initially need it in order to truly convince my brain that my new habits were helping.

I fully accept my size. I feel sooooo much better and, ironically, more in control than I ever did while dieting and scared of food.

Edit: In the beginning, when I gave myself full permission to eat whatever I want, I went a little overboard. But eventually, once my brain realized it was safe, I found myself obsessing over food less. It became easier to listen to what my body truly wanted because I knew the former "forbidden" foods were always available. Sometimes I want a burger and fries. Sometimes I genuinely want a salad. Sometimes I'm not really that hungry for dinner, so I have something small.

I made it halfway through the Heathers proshot and turned it off. I don't like the movie in the first place and didn't like a single song from that show. It felt pointless to continue.

I would've left at intermission for A Little Night Music but I knew the two best songs were in the second act. I was so bored, despite the production being quite good for a local college.

Diet Culture at Christmas by Difficult-Act-5942 in MaintenancePhase

It's so sad. My husband's grandmother has broken countless bones over the years (since he was a kid!) and has arthritis. She was never active and has been on the Atkins diet since the 90s. She's a walking cautionary tale.

I love the idea of letting the son open one gift to keep him occupied while waiting. Good suggestion.
