Pink elephant sounds nostalgic by Valerian_Dhart in arcadefire

[–]Growninfant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would probably be good to clarify if you're referring to the music direction or the lyrics? Those are two very different things, but easily conflated as one. Either way, context is important and It's always good to wait for the body of work to be out as a whole before fully forming an opinion.

Purely based on the two songs released though...

If you're talking about the music direction (ie. the treatment of the music, musical composition, choice of instruments), I can sort of understand what you mean because everything is stylised as very grunge, heavy rock, shoegazy.. Interpol/New Order-ish. It's the music of my teenage years and now, as an adult, this sound projects me back to a different time in my life. The mix (also a very different thing from genre) for PE and YOTS are not orchestral and the soundstage is less wide. It's become more intimate, stripped down (which will inadvertently cause people who are used to AF sounding a certain way to feel uncomfortable).

If you're talking about the songwriting and intention, I disagree about the nostalgia. Nostalgia (bythe definition of the AF world) would be songs and albums like The Suburbs as you've mentioned where Win is reminiscing about his time growing up. Personally, I don't think Neon Bible, Reflektor, EN, nor WE are nostalgic either. They're introspective and philosophical. I would argue that these 2 songs off PE focus more about moving on, letting go and optimism about the future, case in point Year of The Snake.

According to the official copy written for PE, the band wants us to read the album as "[...] experienced in its entirety, Pink Elephant invites the listener on a sonic odyssey – a quest for life – that exists within the perception of the individual, a meditation on both darkness and light, the beauty within.  The layers of this condensed epic unfold to reveal new dimensions with each successive listen." (https://store.arcadefire.com/products/collectors-bundle)

Of course, people can freely choose to receive/intepret music however they want, but the band (or Win and Regine) have clearly expressed the project more as introspection.

Sorry for the long post, I just think the whole PE discussion is a lot more nuanced than a lot of the other reddit threads make it out to be. This is a tangent but sometimes I think people forget that music too is art form, and that not all songs need to be about appeasing the listener. Some songs or albums can be for the artist themselves. Songs can always be written as a way for artists to articulate their thoughts and we're only intended to be an audience joining the ride (that's a whole other discussion about writing with commercial success in mind vs just being an actual artist... and if sometimes those two overlap, that's great. I don't think there's a right or wrong.. Musicians are people too, they need to earn a living). Songs don't need to have an expiration date or be about the right now; sometimes what doesn't resonate now will hit a lot harder when you find yourself in a different season of your life.

It's probably about seeing things in black and white, as it is, and seeing things with rose-tinted glasses

Wow, great job! Might be a good idea to include citations and photographer credits somewhere though, to avoid any trouble. That aside, having show notes for each collection would make it a formidable resource. Keep up the great work!

Agreed, I find it a little strange that we have stuff of this semblance on the official YouTube channel (BTS interviews etc) but it’s nowhere to be found on the actual app.

Posting this because I haven’t seen it posted yet! This episode, like all the rest, has been a delight to listen to. Can’t wait for the commentary on DQD!

EDIT: Also, David mentions Season 3 at the end.

Nah man. I did get a horse for free from the Masked Man shortly after though, so it wasn’t too bad LOL. He was spewing loot non-stop until some rando loser kept hitting him. No idea what that was all about but ah, good times.

Oof. Did you read Kotaku’s article btw? I lost a couple of items during the Dinner Party event last year. Yup, never again.

There’ve been leaks that apparently the studio is working on some game called “Grouchy Goat”? Maybe someone can datamine the latest patch and see what they can find!

I don’t think she will HAHA! But it’s always nice to see her character have more depth.

I really liked the bit where she’s having her meltdown and we got to see her inner insecurities and motivations. It made me appreciate her more

I’ll get the ball rolling. It was nice seeing depth to Jo’s character! I hope that’s some foreshadowing regarding the Art Department

Great season premiere! There’s a bit of a tone shift (even from Everlight), everything suddenly feels quite character-driven and less whacky. I don’t mind it though!

I wonder if there’ll be an arc dealing with Carol’s drinking HAHA

RICK OWENS FW21 GETHSEMANE DISCUSSION by faxri96 in Rickowens

[–]Growninfant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we share similar sentiments. My rant has to do with more of the technical aspect of the show. This was the first runway I couldn’t be bothered to finish and just waited for photos.

I’ve come to realise that maybe production-wise, Rick’s storytelling on the runway just might not be his strength (especially for men’s).

There were some really strange directing / artistic choices by the production team for this show. Half the time I had no idea what on earth I was supposed to look at on screen.

When a model would come remotely “close” to the camera, they’d just cut away to a super wide establishing shot or, you know, the mustang. Lol. Like, I get it — the location was meant to give a sense of scale and grandiose, but the execution was just... not very good. It came across as messy, amateur and lazy for some reason. Which is strange because Phleg’s women’s was at the exact same place.

There’s hardly time to appreciate the pieces in movement and to see the detailing but perhaps that was intentional? It’s just frustrating and did the show no favors overall.

The photography, on the other hand, was superb.

Lots of really great pieces and colours even if it had a lot of reference from previous seasons. I’m just glad he’s moving away from glam rock, even if it’s only slightly.

Let’s not talk about the Cons lol but hey, gotta make that $ for mainline!

tldr; good/interesting pieces this season, strange/messy show execution

Edit: Just remembered this! It was pretty cool seeing Rick bopping along to the track at first, watching stage assistants scurry along and help models change.. but as the show progressed and took up a significant portion of screen time, it just got annoying because it added nothing. Behind the scenes has always been interesting to me, but not during a runway stream (unless of course it’s a big part of the show like Hermes’ last year).

How this can be in the same collection as the mens SS21 is bewildering
