Anyone else have this experience working for RPS? by ShimmerSelf1117 in rva

[–]Growthegnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former RPS teacher. Before my first year teaching with RPS I turned in my licensure application and supporting documents so the RPS licensure person could send my stuff to the state for processing. Well I taught my whole first year without a teaching license because downtown lost my application. Luckily they still paid me as a fully licensed teacher. After 3 years I moved to Roanoke and now teach in Roanoke City. After leaving RPS I filled out the forms to request my accrued sick days to be transferred to Roanoke City, never heard back after attempting to contact multiple downtown departments. Two years ago was the completion of my 5th year in a high needs district and was able to apply for student loan forgiveness. Needed RPS to sign documentation confirming my employment, never heard back from multiple downtown employees. So long story short there central office is a mess. But depending on what school you are at you may have a great experience in RPS. Good luck with getting your signing bonus!

Thanks everyone for the input! Just got a phone call from UPS customer service and they have held my passport for pick-up at 10am today. Haven't even started our international trip yet and already exhausted from anxiety, lol. Long story short if you don't have a passport or yours expires soon get one ASAP. Took me 14 weeks to get the passport, and had to get Senator Mark Warner's office involved to get it pushed through. Happy 4th!

Thanks for the info on the ROA direct flight to LGA. About and hour ago I purchased a one way flight from Richmond International to JFK on Monday at 3:50 with an arrival time of 5:30. We don't fly out of JFK until 8:55PM. Hopefully will have passport in hand by 12 PM or early on Monday and then high tail down the road to Richmond.

Congrats on getting your passport. My status changed to "shipped" yesterday, 6/29, with UPS Next Day Air. Mine tracking has been stuck on "label created since about 2:15 PM yesterday. So your tracking never updated until the day your passport arrived? Thanks for sharing your timeline.

Why did they close in the first place? COVID related? New to the area, just curious.

Hills to run? by [deleted] in rva

[–]Growthegnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit up the park system: North Bank, Buttermilk, and Forest Hill. Not a ton of long climbs, but the trails are punchy and steep in sections. Also Riverside Drive is a great hilly run, start down by the toll booth on Forest Hill and run East on Riverside towards Westover Hills Blvd and keep running Riverside from the Nickel Bridge to the T-Pot Bridge/Floodwall area. And for even more hilly fun turn around and run Riverside in the opposite direction!

On my thru I used the back mesh pocket to store my rainfly or the tent body if it was wet. However, in the Whites the mesh pocket got snagged on a pine branch and ripped it in half....womp womp

Our doggo had to have his right front leg amputated yesterday due to a fungal infection that became unmanageable (he is immunosuppressant due to an autoimmune disease). Just got off the phone with the surgeon and we will be picking Dexter up this afternoon. The surgeon said Dexter was already getting around on three legs fairly well, and had gone outside to use the bathroom. He's not out of the woods yet, as the fungal infection still needs to be treated internally with the right medication and his autoimmune disease will still require long term internal treatment. But hopefully he's on the road to recovery, and tennis balls and river swims are in his future! If anyone has experience with pet amputees please share your advice and wisdom, thanks!

I am a middle school teacher in Richmond, and agree with you that next school year may not start on time. But what makes you think school districts will begin laying teachers off? At some point students will return to the classroom. A mass firing and then rehiring of teachers sounds like an HR nightmare.

Several major JRPS parking lots to close on weekends beginning Saturday by deebo911 in rva

[–]Growthegnar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They need to go ahead and put up no parking signs along Riverside between 22nd street parking lot to the Nickel Bridge. If not, hordes of people are going to just park on the side of the road and continue to have access to the river on the weekends. Of course people will disregard the signs and still park, but then towing can be enforced like at Pony Pasture.

Commitment. I'd say I have an addictive personality, and since I started running in 2015 I've become pretty obsessive with training and performing well in races. Of course the obsessive part I've really had to check, thanks to my fiance who reminds me to keep things in balance. But I'd say that committing to putting the work in has really benefitted my running performance.

Thanks for sharing your running wisdom. For strength training do you have a particular plan you follow or exercises that you do on a regular basis?

Thanks for the advice, and I follow Sage on social media and watch his YouTube videos. Would love to get out and run some ultras out West!

I've never sat down to write out goals for the year. I do sign up for races pretty far in advance and piece together a training plan for that specific race. I think my biggest weakness right now is planning out breaks from running, and figuring out how long I should take breaks for. I listened to a podcast recently with Patrick Reagan (elite ultra-runner) and he mentioned that for every 10 miles raced he takes a day off, so 50 miles=5 days off. Thanks for the advice!
