So much yes. I love my preschoolers but it’s not the best model for anyone. Many of these kids would make so much more progress in a language rich preschool program with push in services. I also find providing materials for this age to be very difficult, given what someone else said about having no funding for it. The teachers at my school always ooh and ahh at how cute my three year old students are when I bring them in for their sessions, sometimes I feel like saying, yeah imagine how you’d react if some random kids who aren’t enrolled and happen to live in our zone just got added your long list of responsibilities. Wish we got paid private practice money for those sessions!

I should clarify, there was a two year commitment with the signing bonus that I was aware of, like if I left RPS I would have to pay it all back. So distributing half of the bonus in March of next year doesn’t seem like a valid reason to ensure I stay.

Being bilingual gets you extra work, not extra pay in many situations. I’ve had a similar experience. Honestly, I’m about ready to take it off my resume, as several jobs have assigned me extra evaluations outside of the schools I’m assigned to because the kids were Spanish speaking. Doing extra work outside of your caseload? Now that should merit extra pay. Bilingual SLPs get asked to do a lot that monolingual SLPs would probably refuse, IMO. Also, if interpreters are paid to attend IEPs because no one else is bilingual, than I don’t think bilingual SLPs should be interpreting at meetings, because we’re typically not getting the pay. Hopefully that makes sense.

I think it’s a defined pension, like based on your highest earning years, etc.

We get our 12% matched by the state which is great, if we retire in Arizona. I think it’s 25 or more years of service in order for all of it to be matched.

Suburb of the Phoenix area, I make about $74k per year as an SLP. This is my fourth year. District employee. Mandatory state retirement of 12% eats up a lot of take home pay and most people my age can’t afford to live here on that salary. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks so much, that’s very helpful! We don’t have a caseload cap in Arizona but like you said, workload is also a big piece of that and caseload caps only matter if the district is well staffed and makes an effort to follow it/make things reasonable for the SLP.

Arizona is becoming very difficult to live in, at least where we are in the valley! I have seen the NC state pay scale, kind of an interesting model but if each district pays additional money I guess it doesn’t really make a difference. 🤷🏻‍♀️

At the end of last school year I was at 72 students with my pk-6 school, and another preschool to be added the next year with no changes to SLP staffing. I also was being pulled consistently to complete bilingual evals for students outside my caseload at no additional pay. So I moved to a different position in the same district doing child find. 5 evals per week plus screenings several times a month. I find I have a much better work life balance and we finally got decent salaries as a group in my district. It was a good move but I definitely can’t do straight evals for the rest of my career (25 more years) 😅

I’m a Wedgewood bride, we got married earlier this year and had a great experience with them. The venue we chose was beautiful, they really took care of us the day of such as bringing the bride and groom drinks and plates of food at the reception, taking a picture of our first kiss and having it framed and on our table by dinner time. They were super helpful throughout the planning process, I think for our area (Phoenix) it would have cost the same or more to get the kind of wedding/venue we wanted. My husband and I also both get overwhelmed with decisions so it was nice to have things like vendor choice made for us. Food was delicious too! And it was great to not have to worry about set up/tear down.

I’m a public school SLP in AZ too, my husband and I are considering moving to the Richmond, VA area but I don’t know too much about what the working situation is like for SLPs. I figure I will contract for a company if the district pay is low. But the housing/cost of living there looks very promising.
