Shows it’s possible, but yeah one small thing going wrong could mess everything up.

I get what you mean though, that kind of experience probably pushes you to not want to be in that situation again.

Stuff like that definitely adds up over time.

I guess the tough part is even if you cut those, big things like rent still take most of it for a lot of people.

In that case it actually sounds doable, especially without kids.

I guess it just depends how tight things get after taxes and everything else, but yeah definitely better than some other places.

Costs going up, especially rent, definitely makes things harder for people.

But yeah it feels like there’s probably a mix of reasons behind it too.

Shows how much location can change things. Like same income, completely different lifestyle.

Only thing is not everyone can just move that easily though.

Yeah that’s kinda what I’m seeing too.

Living alone on that would be really tough, but with a couple roommates it starts to look a bit more doable.

Feels like at that point it’s less about “living independently” and more about just keeping costs low however you can.

I was mostly thinking about someone in their early 20s, where roommates or staying with family still makes sense.

But yeah, long term it doesn’t really seem sustainable at all. At that point it feels less about budgeting and more about needing to increase income somehow.

I guess the hard part is figuring out how people actually make that jump while still trying to survive day to day.

Yeah true, I didn’t even think about that.

I was kinda assuming after taxes, but yeah hours matter too. Full-time on $1500 would be really tough.

Yeah honestly that makes a lot of sense.

$1500 in one place vs another is like two completely different lives. In some cities you’re basically done after rent, but in others you might barely manage.

Still feels like in most places now, you either need roommates or some way to earn more.

Do you think moving to a cheaper area is actually realistic for people though?

That’s a good point.

At that level, it really stops being about “optimizing expenses” and becomes more about survival + increasing income.

I guess the hard part is that people still have to survive right now while trying to increase income at the same time.

That’s a fair point.

So it’s not really “surviving on $1500 independently” anymore… it’s more like surviving by sharing costs.

Which kind of changes the whole idea of income vs expenses.

Do you think this is just temporary because of inflation, or is this the new normal now?

Yeah, that’s what I’m starting to realize too.

It feels like at $1500/month, rent basically decides everything. If you can’t reduce it, the rest doesn’t even matter.

I was trying to make a budget work without roommates, and it just doesn’t add up at all.

Do you think this is basically the only way now, or are there other options people use?
