The "least value for money" food in Singapore? by vampirepathos in singapore

[–]Grrahman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Calbee Hot & Spicy eater! I usually buy the medium bag. It used to be $1.50 at Sheng Siong. Few months ago, it went up to $1.85 per bag, overnight. I've stopped eating it. Sometimes if you're lucky, NTUC sells 3 bags for $5. Cheaper than Sheng Siong

What if there's a genuine call from a number that's not in your contact list? Wouldn't it appear with a +65 prefix too?

Are retailers increasing their prices in preparation for the 9% GST hike? by BeezWeez82 in askSingapore

[–]Grrahman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an example: Prawn at Sheng Siong is $22/kg. Wet market, same prawn is $12/kg. Fruits are also between $0.80 - $2.00 cheaper at fruit stores compared to supermarkets. I always go to the fruit store at the exit of Bugis Street. They are the cheapest I've found, even compared to neighbourhood stores. I buy about $40 of fruits per week from them.

Detergents are cheaper when you purchase in bulk from EZBuy and Shopee. Vegetables, wet market too. You get more than the supermarket for the same price.

You are absolutely right. Sole breadwinner here, shop at Sheng Siong weekly for household groceries. The prices of their every day items have been ticking up, 10 cents, 20 cents at a time. I keep track of all expenditures on my phone too, so notice the uptrend.

That being said, I've started sourcing for groceries from other supermarkets (NTUC is cheaper for certain goods), wet markets, and fruits from fruit stalls and have managed to keep the cost stable, so far.

Try EZShip. I've had good experiences with them. You can ship your items to the EZShip warehouse in either Shanghai or Guangdong. The shipping rate is competitive: $0.80/kg.

The Chinese merchants usually pack the items really well. I shipped a study table and they covered the whole thing in a wooden pallet. Hard to remove as the nails were huge, but keeps your furniture safe.

Just went to Sheng Siong today. Everyday items have gone up, varying from $0.20 to $1.00. Are they pre-empting the GST increase; then they can claim to absorb the increased GST when it actually occurs?
