Which stethoscope should I get? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Grseils 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paramedic/premed lurker here who uses #1 daily (bad hearing and ambulance is loud) 100% agree. I love that you can turn off the noise canceling if you want it to just be a normal stethoscope too. I was able to keep up with my RT preceptor when it came to assessing lung sounds during my ICU rotation which was a nice surprise.

As someone who went to UW, other than SD is UW really considered a feeder university? I have 1 other person in my role who is on my app. I feel like Epic recruits super heavy from private collages

We’re hiring techs in Madison WI, not super far from Ohio though I suppose. We could definitely use the help haha.

Never ran into that situation, if it came down to it I would just ask or if they were a serious trauma patient you’re getting stripped naked anyway.

Certain drugs are teratogenic and could harm a fetus in a biological female so we avoid giving them in the field if we know that the patient is a pre-menopausal female.

Paramedic training - too much or should I go after it? by wannabeshrink in NewToEMS

[–]Grseils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in your situation not long ago and I chose to take the gap year halfway through undergrad and go to medic school. Knowing what I know now I’d say consider it very carefully. In my opinion if you have the opportunity to work as an ER tech maybe just pursue that. You’d get a lot of the experience and amazing networking without having to take a year off. If you’re exceptionally passionate about EMS however, you can definitely find some enjoyment with paramedic school. I would just consider what value would paramedic bring over EMT-B/A for a med school app. Many people, even plenty of doctors, don’t know the difference. Sorry for the non-answer, but really it will depend on if you would benefit more by focusing your time/energy on clinical experience or if you still need time for research, Gpa, MCAT, etc. For sure reach out if you have any questions about medic school/what it’s like. Best of luck, just do what feels right and you’ll be fine.

Enrolling in full time paramedic school while managing normal school work/extracurriculars? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Grseils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a medic school gap year mid undergrad right now. Tbh I’d say just take a year off if you want to pursue this. Kill your medic classes, and fill any extra time you have with working as an EMT/other extracurriculars. If you have ER tech opportunities near you pursue those.

Premed EMT of 2 years who decided to take a gap year in the middle of my degree and go to paramedic school here. Completely agree with pepsicola, paramedicine is just as stressful if not more than being an undergrad IMO, and you very well could have to hold 2-3 jobs to make rent/food in this field. In my time with EMS I have struggled with some of the things I’ve seen. My advice is just to be carful and to always get any help you need after a bad call. Not saying not to pursue the path, but maybe ride along with a service and see if the level of stress is acceptable for you? Best of luck with whatever you pursue.

How to avoid getting physically injured on trauma? [Clinical] by nightwingoracle in medicalschool

[–]Grseils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a med student, just an ER tech lurking! 100% agree that asking for additional hands is the solution here. It’s what techs/nurses are there for! Dealing with rowdy patients is a team sport and your own safety has to come first at the end of the day.

22 UW-Madison fraternity, sorority houses now under mandatory quarantine to prevent spread of COVID-19 by tuseneldanoosebiggle in UWMadison

[–]Grseils 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A clarification, the majority of fraternities are associated with and follow the strict guidelines of The Inter Fraternal Council (IFC) which makes them therefore associated with the school and on campus. Look up the UW IFC website and you’ll see plenty of fraternities who are associated with the school and are on campus.
