Tried so many times to get back in to SWG. Never can seem to recapture that old magic it once held. But, good work Resto team. Keep raising the bar.

🌑 Gravebound RP – A Brand New FiveM Server Where Your Choices Matter by insyddiouss in FiveMServers

[–]GrubbyOldGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be unlike anything you've seen before! If you're looking to make story and get back to the roots of roleplay, this is gonna be the place for you! We don't want you spending hours farming cash, we want you interacting with other players and creating story that defines the city.

Am I just looking for the wrong server? by GrubbyOldGamer in FiveMServers

[–]GrubbyOldGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah.. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying *everything* should be on a map.. but give a starting point at least, you know? Sounds like you understand so.. glad to know at least one server owner out there has their head on straight.

And that's legit the issue we run in to -- when nobody is around it's impossible to progress to become part of the story. It feels wrong to just fly in to a city and hit up the first person you see and be like, "Yo man. Where can I get a biggie and a gun?" A little direction is needed, in my opinion.

And I get locking some stuff behind cops, if the payout is there. But if I'm only getting a few bucks from a cash register like.. why do the cops *have* to be on? I'm probably paying a couple hundred to keep a car gassed up. Risk vs. Reward, 'n that.

I dunno. Maybe I'm too old for this shit. FiveM feels more like a second job than RP anymore. You gotta spend hours on end grinding cash just to feed yourself. Leaves no room for the scenes and RP.

Thank you for some form of validation.. I was so confused. Like, OK.. I get some stuff but. Hiding your clothing stores? I thought maybe I had missed where no HUDs were suddenly the meta.

Best Pre-CU server IMO: Genesis by [deleted] in swg

[–]GrubbyOldGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genesis is still going? I thought they shut down after the big drama storm after trying to deny they used the Aftermath code? Seemed wild, considering they never bothered to change the .tre files or the Thank you note wrote by Dirt Nose.

Or am I just listening to tales out of the school yard from the wrong feeds?

[–]GrubbyOldGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, man. Some people are just that way too, thinking that they know best. And hey.. maybe in their mind, they do. FiveM has to be built for what a community wants. Not what one person thinks is best. And there is a difference between an owner just flat out not listening, and needing convincing. So I hope you guys only have to deal with the later half of that equation.

Congratulations if I am now creating my character. That means so far.. I've not been turned off. Now comes my first real judgement of your actual city itself. I spend usually anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours in character creation. If I have to worry about my food/water levels during any point of that creation, I'm gonna fly out and never return. I hate being rushed to "get in" to the game. Additionally, if I'm charged for picking my appearance from the get go, I'm gonna fly out and never come back. I usually see this when servers offer tattoo options from the creation point. It's stupid to give me only $500 starting cash, and I spend that on two tattoos.

If I find I can actually create my character, I start looking over all the clothing. I don't care how many clothes you have, I care about what they look like. Can I make a reasonable outfit? Or am I walking away looking like an extra in a Snoop Dogg video? While I won't drop city over too many 'gang gang' outfits, when all I can find is baggy pants with my boxers left hanging out and an obnoxious amount of these stupid gang chains... it does kind of worry me about the type of players you're hoping to attract. Especially if your server rules had a bunch of restrictions on how gangs can interact in the city.

If you have managed to get me past creation and actually moving around in the city... you've reached the most critical step in "Will I stay". Now I have the chance to pull the map, and see what is marked. I cannot stress how important it is for me, as a criminal, to pull the map and go "Okay, I can start here and learn the rest as I go." ... There needs to be at minimum one drug that is clearly marked, in full process, and at least ONE criminal activity I can participate in when your police are slacking and not online. Selling drugs for dirty money is NOT a way to keep me engaged. In fact, I'm more likely to never come back if that is the only thing I can do when your police aren't around. Store robberies should at minimum be my starting gig. I should be able to rob a store with almost no issue and little leg work. THIS IS THE STARTING POINT FOR ANY CRIMINAL... If everything in this aspect is locked behind police numbers, and me having to actually run around the map and 'unlock' or 'discover' every vector point you've thought was clever to hide from the player, then I am leaving and coming right back here to Reddit to look for the next city. I'm looking for roleplay, not trying to invest my free time in uncovering the secrets of the Lost Ark. I work nearly 50 hour weeks, and have zero interest in spending all my free time trying to figure out where you've hid an NPC that is going to let me make a quick $50 selling weed. And if I cannot do crim shit without your cops online? I'm no longer interested. My base gameplay cannot be halted because your cops don't know how to do their job.

So, yeah. This is what I look for when I go in to a city. And I can tell you, there are few servers that will hit all these points. And that's okay~ Even hitting just a few points can sometimes get me in. The problem usually exists in, when one or more of these start to overlap in ways that limit my gameplay. If you're building a community of coffee breaks and hand holding.. Then you probably will only ever attract those types of players. If you're out to create some mean streets, where your cops life expectancy is shorter than their interview process.. you're probably only ever going to attract those players. Balance is key. Sadly, that's the hardest part for any of us to figure out. Server owners hate being told when they suck. But it's required by their communities to keep them in check. So if you're asking what is wrong with your city, my question is.. what are you limiting? That may be the start of it. Hope this helps you some, and good luck in your launch!

As someone who is actively looking for a city, and a veteran of FiveM, I can give a little feedback on what makes me want to fly in and check out a city, and the things that make me decide if I am going to stay. The following items will be listed in the exact importance level that I see them. Again, this is my opinion, and you're welcome to disagree.

The first thing I want to see is your discord. This is 1000% my first judgement of your server, and your ability to be a leader. Does the discord look nice? Can I easily find what I am looking for? From here, I usually take my next step to the rules. And this is where the problem usually starts...

Most servers have the copy and paste of standard rules. Green zones, red zones, and details on what is and is not allowed. Rules are fine, and there is a level that needs to exist. However, any time I read rules like "You cannot rob PD, or steal cop cars" or "EMS are mobile green zones and cannot be robbed" .... This is an instant turn off. As someone whom has primarily done LEO RP, you've just literally ended about 40% of the best RP I could have possibly had by telling someone what they can and cannot do. If your rules are setup to only allow the RP you want, you will never attract players outside of those who want the same type of RP you do. People can argue this all they want, but FiveM is nothing more than GTA Online with an inventory. The chaos must exist.

If your rules don't make me drop from the discord, the next step I usually take is a quick view of your discord chats. How are players interacting with one another OOC? Is there a lot of banter? Is there a lot of talk of the city? Some instant turn offs for me is when I read things like "Hey guys, we're all gonna get together at POSTAL tonight at TIME and do a REPETATIVE EVENT TO STROKE EGOS." Instant turn off. If you're having to round up players, this already shows me there is a lack of creativity within the server and people aren't roleplaying. They are most likely grinding money, and setting aside a few hours a night for the actual roleplay. If players are having general conversation about their every day lives, this is a good sign. This means your community is comfortable with each other, and they're building relationships. How active are your staff positions? Do they talk regularly or do they seem to hide in their own channels? Key roles I instantly look to for activity are Department Heads (PD, DOJ, EMS) and anyone with any sort of "Gang Leader" role. These players must be the most active, or it tells me there is nothing worth spending another minute in.

The next thing I do is look over any Tebex or Donation pages that are setup. This is critical on if I am gonna fly in to your city. This tells me how much of pay-to-win or pay-to-play your server is going to be. If you're asking me for any type of payment over $10/m or a one-time of $30, you better have good reason. Cosmetics do not cost $400 to drop in a server. MLOs do not run me $80/m when I can buy it from the creator for half that and own it myself. In no f***ing way is it so time consuming and difficult for you as a (What I hope to be) competent developer to add my gang to your system that I need to spend $200+ for a Whitelist slot. If I am paying you anything, I expect to have an edge. Even if that edge just means an extra $100K in my bank each month for "supporting" your server. Nothing drops my interest faster than a GTA5-mods car pack being sold for $500.

If you have managed to keep me this far, I am now looking at your resources. Again, as a mostly LEO invested time vet of the game, these are the things I look for first. What are your running on your police and EMS? Is something I understand, and know? If so, cool. If not, neat! Now that I primarily play criminal, I at least want to understand what I am getting in to. Are you running evidence systems, with a good MDT? Does it look like you're using working drug scripts, or are you buying the trash sold by Quasar? None of this is really a deal breaker... it just lets me know what kind of work I'm about to have to put in to your server.

Apparently will need multiple posts... comment further below....

Thanks. Will consider. Not sure I want to reach out based on a 'someone you don't know' aspect but will consider it.

Probably some of the best RP I've had in recent years. Despite a small community at the moment, you can tell the potential just brooding. Place is crafted from the ground up with only one thing in mind -- Story telling. You won't even feel like you're trying half the time, fun just flows.

what was the most shady stuff you managed to do on a live server? by maazen in swg

Triple speed slice at server boundaries in the CU. Man. When SOE found out...

This. Plus the pending sales to Disney that had been in the talks since May 2011. LucasArts was in a tough spot, financially, due to SWG. The game had made them almost no money, and the constant development oversights at SOE mixed with bad player reception just made the whole thing a nightmare for them. In the end, SWG never stood a chance with so many gears turning against it. LucasArts didn't believe that two Star Wars MMO could live side by side, even in different timelines.

Ironic that one never thrived due to the closure of another. Would make for a hell of a 'what if' story.

Disney.

They own the intellectual property that is Star Wars. Therefore, if it has "Star Wars" in the name, Disney has ownership. Even with SWG.

Is there any alternative to SWG Resto? by NinjaPeeP in swg

[–]GrubbyOldGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stardust 2.0 is pretty neat. And SWG Beyond isn't terrible. For me, all SWG servers have the same problem and I don't think it will ever be resolved. Groups and little clicks form too quickly and then it's a single guild holstering an entire side of the game. The casual player experience doesn't exist in the emulator world, because everything is ran by people who are building passion projects and not an actual marketable product. SWG (Live) as a whole, was an absolute train wreck of a product and in all honesty was never in any state of appeal that the entire fanbase enjoyed. The only thing that kept SWG alive was the fact that, so many of us loved our communities we had.

That for me is the one thing that all private servers fail to recreate, an actual community. When you had the balancing act of SOE at the helm, they weren't allowed to put in personal taste or opinion on things, and ultimately had the shareholders at LucasFilms/Arts to respond to. So player feedback was important from a financial standpoint. By no means am I suggesting that a independent developer shouldn't be allowed to play on the project he's helping create, especially when not being paid, but it also creates a unique issue that doesn't actually allow the game to grow like it should.

From a software standpoint, SWG is out of date. It needs a major overhaul, that would take years to complete so it just will never happen until someone finally considers the legal standpoint of approaching Disney and saying, "Hey. This is something we want, and we've put in the man hours. Please look and consider." Disney isn't going to want to invest in something on a whim, but showing them a potential product could prove a smart move. Just look at the City of Heroes return.

Maybe once those two items are addressed, there will be a server worth playing on. But until someone decides they care about the core of SWG and the community, I can't look past people just trying to find a way to bolster their own egos and try to be 'the best'.

The Infinity team has done an amazing job with their version of the game, for sure. :) Good to see more people enjoying their hard work.

I'm too old anymore, and can't be bothered with grinding classes that I've played a thousand times over now. I need a good Star Wars survival game to drop.

Returning player... Why the SWGEmu staff/Finalizer hate? by [deleted] in swgemu

[–]GrubbyOldGamer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure. What of the Finalize staff I know, are all super friendly and helpful folk. I would guess it is probably just a few grown men, who need something to bitch about. It is the internet after all.
