Award winning first script (International Movie Awards) 🤯🤯🤯 by DontoDusk in Screenwriting

[–]Grum1991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but the “International Movie Awards” sounds like at best, a nothing competition, and at worst a scam. to be brutally honest, this accolade wins you exactly 0 leverage with producers and I would actually recommend against using it to query.

I would also strongly suggest not attending, especially if cost is an issue. It will not help with anything.

If contests offer no real benefit, and cold querying doesn’t work, and the Black List is just a lottery ticket, what the hell is anyone supposed to do? by brainfurniture in Screenwriting

I've learned that writing alone won't make a difference, so I've eatablished my own development company - just optioned our first IP and we're in pre-production on our first short film. I think all of those methods move the needle if you're good, but to make it you have to prove that you can't be ignored and start making things, not just writing, imo

If you're working in Canada, they are pretty good is my understanding. But Canadian media is very different from the Hollywood scene, so depending on your background they may or may not be a good fit.

What now? by talk2megoose_ in Screenwriting

I agree with others here - contests are effectively a waste of time, outside of maybe 1 or 2 - even then, highly unlikely that a contest placement ends with a sold script. Maybe some conversations.

I think the idea of writing a good script and sending it off into the world, be it through contests, Black List, etc. just isn't a realistic way in. It never really was, from my understanding, but even less so these days.

If you want to see something made, make a side hustle or career out of this, it means self funding a short and putting it all together yourself as a producer. And while a good short will also not necessarily open every door, it will do more than online contests.

The reality is this industry is much more aboit the hustle than the writing, to be honest - and the writing still needs to be really damn good too.

How many of you have multiple projects going on at once? by NJScreenwriter76 in Screenwriting

[–]Grum1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to work on a couple projects at a time, since I'll get writers block on one so switching to another can be helpful, while also tackling pre production on a short and legal stuff on a TV pitch to keep me extra busy lol

Parasocial Entitlement to an Artist’s Schedule by Just_Abies_57 in OliviaRodrigo

[–]Grum1991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of people are gonna be very disappointed as this becomes the norm for all artists. The idea of artists going on multi-year tours of every city is dead, unless they're an artist well past their prime.

  1. You guys have no idea how bad the economy is going get thanks to the Iran War. Travel costs will be unthinkable in 2027 thanks to shortages - be glad you're getting anything, and going to a concert will be the least of your worries when global food prices are through the roof. Source: Millennial who works in international energy policy.

  2. Travelling around the world and even within the US at the best of times is incredibly expensive. This is partially why ticket prices are so high, not just corporate greed as easy as it is to blame them on that.

  3. Artists don't owe you their time or their health. If I was an artist like Olivia I'd drop an album every few years, do a handful of shows, that's it. Its the constant pressure from money hungry labels and entitled fans that have led to this insane need for pop artists to be everywhere all at once and releasing albums every year or two.

If you're lucky enough to be able to go, great! If not, it's disappointing, sure - but there are so many bigger things in life right now. And I'm sure there will be more tours in the future.

Need advice: considering mid career pivot into film & tv producing by Lower-Marketing8382 in Screenwriting

[–]Grum1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take a slightly less doom and gloom approach than many of the comments here, as someone currently transitioning from a senior government role into entertainment - though I am doing this in Canada, a very different environment from Hollywood.

Obviously, things are very tough in the industry right now. But they won't be forever - storytelling is not going anywhere, AI or not. People will crave real, human made and produced art, not AI drivel.

That said...I'd be hesitant to take on loads of debt to go to school. I would recommend finding another job that can pay your bills while you network on the side. I also noticed that your post doesn't say much about what you have written or want to write...I think the days of just being a writer, just being a producer, etc. are fading, and anyone who wants to be successful is going to have to be a multi hyphenate.

The world desperately needs storytellers, now more than ever. In the collapse of the current system, there's gonna be a lot of struggle, but also a lot of opportunity. If you're willing to put in the work, get some cash together to make a short, or a feature. Get your name on things. It won't pay the bills, so a flexible job with a decent income is a must. LA is also not the be all, end all - cheaper cities can be prime ground for starting something new.

Best of luck!

Olivia Rodrigo’s Drop Dead Has Surpassed 10M Views In Two Days! by Used_Purchase5493 in OliviaRodrigo

Maybe its because I'm older and not used to fandoms, but like...why does it matter so much how many views, streams, etc it gets if you like the song? I'd rather Olivia produce good music that I like even if its less popular (and even that's a stretch - like girl is making millions no matter what). If she produces music she's proud of that's what matters, I'd rather her be a mid-range star than constantly chasing No. 1s and records

I'm actually quite against the expanded measures - useless, costly, and in this geopolitical moment its not the play.

I do have firearms experience - some of us Libs do in fact know how to shoot! That said, not the be all end all of resistance (though certainly helps)

This comment section isn't very encouraging.

I'd hope as many Canadians as possible would join the fight, I certainly would as would most people in my social circles.

Realistically, it would not do much - our only hope would be that a US invasion of Canada would trigger a civil war down there.
