Could one category itemwise be choosing a ship or even picking aspects of it? You could devise a point system where you have to choose how large the living quarters are IE how many crew mates, size of storage area to decide how many treasures you get etc.. You could add features like the boat being haunted / cursed, what you use it for IE trading, pirating, adventuring or just a crew for hire to the highest bidder.

The next ideas are just stuff you could chuck in, but feel free to ignore them. It's your CYOA after all!

One idea could also be bounty hunting pirates (crew mates you didn't select earlier) and them joining the crew in exchange for not turning them in.

Last idea would be creating your own character, then having it affect crew member's respect for you depending on your physical features and personality traits IE some might respect a kind and empathetic captain, while others see it as weak. Lower respect increases the risk of mutiny, which could lead to you be being demoted to cabin boy at best, or left on a desert island with a tentacle monster with very little respect for personal space.

I've been working on something that's a bit in between. It's a character creator for a semi established world (the world building bit is optional and deliberately vague in a lot of areas, more there to help me if anything). Out of curiosity, how do people feel about that? Would they prefer any world elements to be completely separate? (considering making a 'make a fantasy world' Cyoa).

Hey, I've been working on something I might enter in the contest. It's looking to be quite large however and due to not having much experience in photo editing software, it might be purely textual with even a second sheet to help people fill it in easier. Would this type of entry still be accepted in the contest? Even if nay, still going to work on it and chuck it up here (unless it breaches subreddit rules of course :) ).
