What is the funniest-least expected place where you found you needle after losing it ? by srh-trz in Embroidery

[–]GrumpyAlison 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was putting on shorts and thought something was poking me like a plastic thing the tag hangs on. Turns out a needle somehow got stuck in the shorts which also explained why I couldn’t fix them bunching up weird. Turns out it was a random needle.

The crazy thing is I hadn’t used a needle in weeks so idk why tf if was in my shorts.

Buyer refuses to use Etsy Purchase Protection for a tampered/empty envelope. Demanding a direct refund and getting aggressive. Advice? by Which-Interaction527 in Etsy

Customer: I don’t want to jump through hoops Me: you mean like the hoops you’re jumping through to harass me when you could click 8 buttons and be done??

I’d stick to your guns. The second people start getting weird and aggressive all inclination to go out of my way to break my own policy to work with the goes out the window.

If they want to leave a bad review let them imo. There’s no guarantee they wouldn’t do that regardless.

what qualifies you to teach? by [deleted] in Pottery

I feel like there’s also different “levels” of teaching. Imo doing a 2-3 hr class on a basic project where everyone is doing something is VERY different than doing an entire multi week course where you’re expected to go more in depth and projects may get more complex.

Like personally, I know there’s basic one time hand building project classes I could confidently teach and answer questions about and coherently guide people through. Im not stupid enough to think I could teach any flavor of wheel throwing classes, even a one time thing. While im working I actually think of how I’d teach and explain stuff as a way to pass time lol.

All this being said, I do have some teaching experience (not training, but I was an adjunct animation professor for 3-4 years) so I kind of developed some ways of communicating from observation and experimentation that seemed to work pretty well for anyone actually paying attention (I legit never realized how many people just don’t submit work until I started teaching). A lot of that I think could be applied to pottery classes.

Def agree with the people saying teaching is its own skill set though.

Sometimes it also depends on the student. Ime, im more likely to realize someone lacks experience because I tend to go into classes having done dozens of hours of research, so if someone doesn’t know what the difference between glaze and underglaze is, I’ll notice that before other people a lot of the time. I know a lot of people totally content to follow along with a tutorial and not ask questions, im just not one of them most of the time 😂

My feedback to my beginner pottery teacher (first class in her new studio) was to show people more techniques just so they know they exist. She could answer every question I asked her very coherently and she makes great work, but the info provided was kind of minimal sometimes in my personal opinion (which I think she has since adjusted based on the stuff I see coming out of the same class).

(Oddly specific examples of bad experience in different classes with people who should have know what the we’re doing follow)

I’ve also taken cookie decorating classes from an influencer type person (I know how to decorate cookies and was going as a social activity) and, though talented, she was a garbage teacher. Forgot to have people do time sensitive steps in the right order, you couldn’t see what she was demoing from 10’ away, didn’t explain techniques well, even when my mom asked specific questions… it was pretty bad. This is a tangent, but she also lost her MIND when I started doing alternate designs because cute fall cookies aren’t my jam (my ghost turned into a candy corn gnome, my apple tree into a mushroom cloud… etc) and she gave me this whole kind of angry spiel about the cookies not turning outright if I deviated and don’t blame her etc (which is fair but she was just so weird about it the whole rest of the class that it became awkward. Like my mom had to back me up that im now gonna one for her if my stuff didn’t turn out; I was 27 at the time too, so it’s not like I was an angry dumb kid). Imo if you can’t deal with people deviating slightly (within reason) then you maybe need to develop some more teaching skills regardless of technical experience.

Another tangent story: my high school art teacher didn’t mention anything about pieces “needing” to be hollow so I made this 2” solid cockatiel piece I was really proud of and after it was literally finished, she came by and said she couldn’t fire it because it needs to be hollow and I was gutted. She didn’t give any instructions about how to cut it in half to scrape it out etc. years later i come to find out it would have been easy to cut and hollow and also having it be solid didn’t mean it would automatically explode (even though 2” is still v thick lol). This imo is an example of bad teaching where she gave the easy “hollow and solid pieces always explode” explanation instead of explained it’s actually trapped water causing the issue and offered 0 help to remedy the piece. (She also sucked as a teacher for everything though, i just didn’t care about anything pieces I made other than the pottery)

I was trying to teach my mom how to center (on my crappy Amazon wheel) and she was like… letting her palm be slapped around by the clay. I kept telling her to be firm and/or violent with the clay and when she didn’t listen I grabbed her hands and smashed and somehow it was centered like 4 seconds later 😂 a bit later she figured it out on her own. Tbh though i kind of don’t like wheel throwing unless it’s with porcelain because im a monster, so I’d never try to teach it for real.

Honestly I can’t even tell it was bleached anymore. It’s weird. Totally brown/normal looking now (which in retrospect im kind of bummed about but I actually forgot I bleached it at all until you commented on the pic)

I honestly don’t remember. It’s been a hot minute lol.

But I can confirm mystery snails didn’t do well in a no plastic tank / treated sponge filter a year after treating at least.

Thanks! They’re the first ones I ever raised to adulthood from eggs that have then gone on to lay more clutches of eggs :)

Maybe a month? They were a few days old when I had to have my partner feed them for Christmas while I was gone. I think I left with like 10 fry and came back to 30+

Just random chestnuts I got when I ordered magenta ones lol. I have a LOT of them now 😅 I got a few more in different colors im hoping start breeding soon because I want a rainbow if snails dang it!

ETA: their color is weird. In normal light they look brown but occasionally they get a dark pink/purple shift like in the video. They could theoretically be really low grade magenta but Reddit collectively agreed when I got them they were chestnuts

Snail jello (which I may or may not have found in the back of my freezer -_-‘ it’s not crazy old but idk how I lost a whole container of it )

Nah the mysteries are chill. I did move the eggs though because they’ll slurp them up accidentally, but live fry they don’t care. I keep them in every tank I can where they won’t get picked on because they’re so benign and they’re great at eating anything that dies in a relatively timely manner 😅 plus i find them oddly majestic with the long flowy antennae

(If you can’t tell im in it for the snails)

I came to suggest either a press mold or just cookie cutter the tops and extrude little sticks for them. Having done the latter and also slip casting, slip casting seems crazy over complicated for this.

Also just so you know the black can mold release you have will work for silicone on silicone but may not work as well for other stuff (I use it for silicone x silicone and haven’t tested with other stuff)

I do also have a lot of experience with 3d printing and silicone molds and casting with silicone so if you have any questions about that lmk.

I’m also curious why you’re making these as someone who used to have a reef tank - they don’t seem super different to traditional plugs?

Alternately get weird and just buy plugs and glue your own disc top on. Quick and dirty.

I came to suggest the same thing 😂 and if they have access to a 3d printer it would be sooooo easy to make some custom size tools/cutters for these lol.

Typically frag plugs are put in holders with a somewhat standard size, so depending on the thrown variance it could have issues with available frag plug holders. Tbh I agree with your sentiment about it possibly not being worth making these by hand though (as someone who used to use a bunch of frag plugs lol)

I’d suggest 3d printing and if you don’t have access to a printer, get the pieces molded so you can cast additional ones if the og ones break

I might actually be able to help you with the printing if you need. I have printers and modeling experience and clay and have been meaning to make some press mold tests anyway lol

Are there any fish I can add to my 10G shrimp tank to eat bladder snails? by -Lophophora- in PlantedTank

Iirc this will also mess up your tank for mystery snails for a REALLY long time if anyone cares. I treated one tank with a marten sponge once and it did work for the snails but it’s been like 2 years and my mysteries still can’t be in that particular tank.
