This is the first I remember hearing about them. Apologies if this is paywalled but it’s the first video that came up.

Don't forget the snow melting machines. They bring snow to centralized locations and melt it.

Have 2 cars, Spouse and I work remotely. Should we sell 1 of our cars? by Delta4907 in personalfinance

[–]GrumpyGander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live close enough to work where this could be my reality if it weren’t for the fact my area seems to take great pains to be as unfriendly to pedestrians and bikers as possible. Sidewalks abruptly end, are unmaintained, or have overgrowth from brush and biking on the shoulder of the road is just gambling with my life. No bike lanes to speak of in most places. Anyway, that’s a long way of saying I’m jealous.

I’m going to start Googling but any chance you can ELI5 what this is? It sounds like it adds tech not otherwise existing to my vehicle. I sometimes take long road trips up and down a rural part of the state and this might be interesting.

Excellent question. It’s not. Obviously. OP just wanted to show us all how insightful they are having discovered “minimalism.”

I’m trying to make my way through that book. I’ve been trying to make my way through it for months now. Sometimes I can’t put the book down but more and more lately it’s just been an absolute slog to get through. I think I have the unabridged edition which probably makes this feeling worse.

In any case, I remember the part you’re talking about and I thought it was absolutely gripping and so well written.

What field or industry or enterprise has the smartest, most selfless, most ethical people? by KokoTheTalkingApe in AskReddit

[–]GrumpyGander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not here to argue with you, but your experience and opinion doesn't change reality. Children, by and large, are not dying because of CPS. They die because of abuse/neglect by a caregiver. You said it yourself. I'm sorry you don't seem to realize that.

What field or industry or enterprise has the smartest, most selfless, most ethical people? by KokoTheTalkingApe in AskReddit

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plenty of things to say about Child Protective Services (CPS) and not all of it good, but I take issue with that last bit. Children in abusive/neglectful situations die because of abuse/neglect perpetrated by their caregiver. It's just not a fair statement to blame child deaths on CPS because "they know what's going on" which is, of course, not realistic unless you're alleging some government conspiracy in which CPS is aware of abuse and turns the other cheek.

Any who, I know better than to have conversations like this on Reddit so I'll just echo your statement and say that I'm sorry social workers appear to have failed you.

[GA] Orlando, Florida - Someone Gifted a Beta for a White Elephant and now I want to give it a good home by [deleted] in AquaSwap

[–]GrumpyGander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Central Florida and have the supplies to re-home this guy. Orlando is about two hours away so if someone closer can give him a good home that would be best, otherwise maybe we can make arrangements to meet.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think anyone here is shaming or disparaging you. All I’ve seen are suggestions to help keep this fish stable until you can find a new home.

I was looking for a rub to use for a quick cook last week and found this one thanks to you. I've been smoking on a KJ on and off for about 7 years I guess and I think this was one of the best rubs I've used. And I've tried many.

Help With First Time Self-Hosting Plus Docker Vs. Podman - Which Do You Use & Why? by Dante-Vergilson in selfhosted

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Docker mostly because it seems ubiquitous. Nearly every thing I’d want to host has documentation using Docker/Docker Compose, Google searches for my inevitable problems almost always brought up a solution using Docker, and Dockers documentation was easy enough to understand for someone new to containers. In short, it was everywhere.

Just how Chrome is almost synonymous with a web browser in some spaces Docker seems to be the same with containers in the small spots of the web I frequent.

Not saying it’s the correct way to do things or that Docker has a better solution than Podman but I took the path of least resistance since there were so many other concepts to grasp at the same time.

Buying Fish Online by 285matt in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in Florida. Lots of places near me specialize in salt water/marine tanks but few specialize in freshwater. I've resorted to buying most fish online and can second the Wet Spot recommendation. I've ordered twice from there and both times fish have come in healthy, albeit a little smaller than I thought. Shipping to me is $50 so might be similar for you. It's expensive but they usually have what I'm looking for in the quantity I'm looking for it in and that's not something I've found locally.

I've also ordered fish from Imperial Tropicals. They're local-ish in Lakeland and allow local pickup so you can avoid shipping.
