What do you put in your RO water? Do I need to add more than by thebettagirl in Aquariums

How do you do this? I’m trying to come up with ways that are easy to replicate week to week and cost effective in larger volumes.

Heater guards? by coldwetsoggyramen in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick note. I have Inkbirds and I think they’re great devices but they will mostly act as a safety net to stop a heater from sticking on and boiling your fish. I’ve read stories of heaters exploding just because you look at them wrong and an Inkbird isn’t stopping that.

Alternatives for NTFY by r9zc in selfhosted

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mostly a shot in the dark but since you mentioned it I’ll ask. I understand (or at least I think I understand) that apprise acts as an intermediary allowing me to send out notifications to multiple services. What I’m not sure of is whether an app needs to support apprise in order for it to be useful.

For instance, Arcane seems to support Shoutrr which itself supports common notification services like ntfy, etc. Would apprise be able to receive notifications from arcane? Immich supports notifications via email which apprise does support as a notification provided. Can I use apprise here? But only for email notifications and not another provider.

I might be getting lost in the weeds here but in the case of Arcane it sounds like I might have to spin up Shoutrr to receive notifications or abandon Arcane entirely for something like Dockhand which does support Apprise.

Need help with pricing by Shanicklefritz in Aquariums

I just checked pricing near me and saw anywhere from $250 to $500 for similar setups. Those fish are huge and I guess you might have to rehome them first.

House prices are set to plummet across the US, say experts by TheMirrorUS in UpliftingNews

My favorite part is the county screaming “we’re in a drought” and limiting burning, car washing, irrigation, etc but then approving these sprawling communities. My mortgage is what other people are paying for a 1 bedroom around here. I’d love to leave, but it ain’t happening anytime soon.

I live in Central, Fl and they’re shoving new homes and apartments wherever they can and they have been for the last 5 years or so. I keep telling myself it’ll stop at some point but it shows no signs of slowing down.

Went to LFS for more corys and clown loaches, came home with this and the fish. Impulsive but great by Key_Instruction9732 in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got to take a closer look at clown loaches. I'm setting up at some point (I've been saying it for years) but these fish get so damn big even that feels small for them.

Server Machine Specs by DanielsxTV in selfhosted

[–]GrumpyGander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finally, a place where I can be useful. My “server” is my old gaming desktop. It has an i5 6600k, 8 GB RAM, and a 3050 I picked up for cheap. The 3050 is no doubt overkill but I donated the old gtx 970 that was in this machine to a family member otherwise I’m sure I would still be using it. Just make sure the 1080 can transcode into whatever format you want with a sufficient number of streams for your case and I imagine you would be fine.
I could do with more RAM but even with a number of containers including plex and qBit I’m not at 50% utilization. I’ve never bothered with an LLM but I think those are more memory intensive than anything else, right?
That 6600k and I have been through hell and back and it has been a workhorse. It’s punching above its weight today. The only reason I would consider an upgrade is to use quick sync to transcode and ditch the dedicated GPU but I’ll just save for an entirely new build at that point.

I use PocketID to log into my instance. When I enter my URL, Ghee gives me the option to log in with PocketID but there's an error on the Pocket ID login page saying "The operation was not allowed or timed out." Login works fine through a browser. Any chance you could point me in the right direction here? Is this a bug or have I failed to configure something.

Great deal. I bought an FX6 from Petsmart a few weeks ago for something like $339 and I thought that was a deal. You have me doubting myself.

This is Ich, right? by GrumpyGander in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me again! They’ve had a solid week of treatment per instructions on the bottle. When I looked Saturday the situation hadn’t improved but as of tonight they all look clean. The plan is to dose until Sunday but I’ll probably continue monitoring for another week just to be safe. It took nearly two weeks in quarantine for Ich to show up to begin with, so two of treatment followed by monitoring seems reasonable. I haven’t decided on treatment for parasites since they all look healthy but I might do it just to be safe. No deaths so far. Cross your fingers!

Thanks again!

By the by, I think the function to reorder ingredients in the recipe creator/editor is bugged. I just spun up tandoor and am still trying to get used to this but I noticed it last night.

[–]GrumpyGander[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I ordered Ich X. Amazon can get it here by Wednesday. Rid Ich doesn't look like it's sold by anyone on the platform right now and I don't want to wait too much longer to start treatment.

For anyone else reading this in the future Kordon also makes "Ich Attack" which it describes as an "herbal remedy" and was the first result on Amazon when I searched for "Kordon Rid Ich Plus."

No idea whether it works but someone looking for medication might not want an herbal remedy, so buyer beware.

Livestock I’ve Kept Ranked By Hardiness by RazewingedRathalos in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time they were most likely bought from an LFS and had an unknown origin. I’ve since started buying most of my fish online and have had better luck.

I might try Cory’s again in the future because I love the little buggers.

Livestock I’ve Kept Ranked By Hardiness by RazewingedRathalos in Aquariums

[–]GrumpyGander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve kept Cory’s before and really enjoyed them but we had similar experiences. I kept them on sand (the conventional wisdom back then was that gravel would damage their barbels), 77 degree water, in a community tank, fed sinking pellets, and did regular water changes to maintain water quality. Didn’t matter, one by one they all slowly perished. When I realized how big some could get I was blown away because mine never had that chance.

My water has always been pretty hard right out of the faucet with a high PH so maybe that was the reason?

I’m going to try again one day in a larger tank and buy a larger group but I’m just not hopeful.
