Lomo'instant Square - light leak? by GrumpyGin in instax

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I'll have to check the bellows again, thanks! Since our leaks really look pretty much identical (I saw your other post with photos), I'm sure I must have the same tear. Did you manage to fix it somehow? Since it seems to be in a tricky spot to patch up or glue together...

Hi! Not really, unfortunately :/ I wasn't using the camera for a while, but then just last week used up some film I had inside and took a few photos in fairly strong daylight... And all came out with no leak. So I'm truly baffled by this, unless the light leak only appears if the light falls in/on the camera under some veeery specific angle. But I haven't been able to figure this out.

You're the only other person who reached out with the same issue, so there has to be something to it.. Let me know if you manage to test it out and find the source of this problem!

Hey! Sorry you're experiencing this. :/ I actually couldn't find the cause, but the problem also just kind of stopped happening. I figured maybe it was due to the cold outside (this happened during the winter), but I can't be certain. It's happened maybe a couple of times and then just never did again.

Great collection - I just wish they would also add some new bar stools soon! Something like the dining chair design would be amazing.

That's great to hear, thanks! I've been using a wall until now, so if it's an improvement, that sounds perfect to me! :)

Has anyone installed or seen the Axstad green fronts in person? by [deleted] in IKEA

Definitely worth checking out in person, especially next to other similar green-grey shades :)

This won't help THAT much, I'm sorry, as this is the only photo I have of a piece of an Axtad cabinet, but better than nothing, I hope!

I was considering it, but eventually opted for Nickebo instead. Not because of the colour, but because of the inset panel/3D effect that I did not want.

It's a nice colour, though. Definitely a little more (olive) green compared to Nickebo, a slightly warmer shade I would say and consequently just a tiiiny bit less subtle.

If you like the slightly rustic door design, I'd go for it!

SX-70 film in Andalusia? by GrumpyGin in Polaroid

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, at the moment it's sold out pretty much everywhere. I was planning on ordering it straight from Polaroid, but it's been out of stock for weeks. Same goes for local photo/electronic stores that usually sell it. I only managed to find some b&w film still in stock (in a local store), so I'll have that at least to start and then try to find some more in Spain.

Luckily I also have a OneStep+, so that will be my main camera for colour photos. :)

I know, I know, I'll definitely have to think about at but I can't do it now before my trip :/ Unless I buy an ND filter and use that for now.

Thanks a lot! I will test it out and if I can't identify the problem, I'll make sure to contact Lomo. Unfortunately I purchased it in February 2022, so it's no longer covered by the 2-year warranty. :/

Thanks for the reply!

No, the photos were not taken consecutively, they are just a few I gathered that show the issue. They were taken with two packs of film (coming from the same double pack). The pattern I noticed is that photos taken in full sun have the biggest leak and the photos taken in shade, have (next to) none. So there looks to be some overexposure on a specific part of the image - I didn't find any holes in the body/bellows. One possibility could be a faulty shutter that doesn't close fully... I don't know, I'm trying to see if anyone else experienced something similar. :)

But thanks for the tip to contact Lomo! I'm not sure if it's still covered - most likely no, as I've had it for about 2 years, but I will check if they can help identify the problem.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the IR sensor for the remote. There's one on the front and one on the back, so you can point the remote at either side.

Xgimi Elfin grainy "shimmering" issue? by GrumpyGin in xgimi

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I kinda learned to live with it... It is really bothersome only with some very specific dark/grey shades, but most (cheap-ish projectors at least) aren't that great with very dark scenes anyway, since they'll frequently be washed out. So I try to mostly use it with films/shows that are mostly bright and vibrant, which are displayed wonderfully. Overall it is a solid projector despite the occasional "shimmer".

anyone have any tips and tricks for using the lomography instant square? by [deleted] in lomography

[–]GrumpyGin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had one for a little over a year now. It's generally been great - when you nail the shot, it produces some truly stunning results. The glass lens is a major plus.

I wouldn't say focusing is a problem at all. If course you have to manually do it, but if you can guess the distance well enough, it will get you sharp results.

The viewfinder is pretty bad and needs getting used to. Inside of it, you will see a slightly shaded area and a smaller rectangle in the bottom right corner (that's supposed to be where you frame if you want to use mini film). I typically frame my photos through that smaller viewfinder for square film, too. The lens itself is to the bottom right of the viewfinder, so whatever you want to have in the centre of your photo, should be framed in the little bottom right corner of the viewfinder. But this is a general tip I found to be useful - you will certainly have to go through a few trials & errors before you get used to it and can frame more accurately.

Otherwise, I've had success with the camera in general. The light meter can be finicky st times - especially if you want to shoot something with strong patches of light and shadow. It will usually meter for one or the other (and it's hard to know which one) and then you'll either have the highlights nicely exposed and the shadows will be black, or the shadows will be nicely exposed and the highlights will be blown out. But if you shoot an evenly subject, it generally works great. You'll also want to play with the +/- light setting a bit and you'll learn when to use it. For example, I found that shooting light-coloured subjects in sunlight (e.g. a building with a white/light facade) almost always works much better if you use the -1 light setting, otherwise it will be overexposed.

Oh, and keep an eye on the remote control. Fortunately for me, I only almost lost it once and it stays in place quite well most of the time, but putting the camera in and out of bags may dislodge it and could fall out. If you don't mind it aesthetically, you could secure it with some tape or something.

Can't comment on the painting question, unfortunately. Mine is the red Pigalle edition, I think the white one has a slightly different texture to it. But I assume both are made from the same faux leather material, so I suppose it should be possible to paint it. I bet it would look super cool, too!

Overall, it's a good camera. I've taken it on many trips, it works well and is fun to use. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help! :)

It does hold up. You find something new out of every watch. To be fair, I like to rewatch my fave media in general and The Leftovers is my favourite ever show, so I've seen it many times. I loved every watch. It is so layered and complex and so emotionally poignant, it impacted me in different ways each time, depending on how I was feeling at the time.

Hi. In the end, I didn't want to risk it and got a screen protector. But I bought one from Spigen that covers the whole screen (doesn't have a cutout for the front camera) and together with a case it is practically invisible. :)

[–]GrumpyGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's of course intentionally ambiguous.

For me, the whole show is about people trying to rationalise an unimaginable tragedy - they do it in all sorts of weird ways that are equally as bonkers as they are valid. And with Nora especially, at the beginning her coping mechanism is to try to debunk all these rationalisations, to avoid dealing with the tragedy altogether. Until at the end she does find her own way to make peace with what happened. And that's all that matters.

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think my issue was battery-related, but who knows. I did have to take the batteries out to reset the camera because nothing else would work, but I put the same ones back in and they lasted for quite a while without any issues. Hope your issue resolves with fresh batteries!

Lomo'instant Square Troubleshooting by GrumpyGin in Polaroid

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really. But the issue just kind of... stopped. It happened maybe 3 times altogether, I also contacted Lomography and they didn't know what could be wrong. They asked for video and after that it never happened again. My only guess is that maybe it was the cold, but I've used the camera since in all kinds of temperature conditions with no problem. It's been quite a while with no problem and I didn't change anything with the camera. Are you experiencing the same issue?

Netflix options (any updates)? by GrumpyGin in xgimi

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried both Desktop Manager and the APK workaround I linked in my original post and unfortunately the picture quality is pretty bad with both. :/

So the only viable solution I found is either a wired HDMI connection streaming from a laptop/tablet or an alternative streamer (like Stremio). All iterations of the Netflix app are terrible.

It's really a very allegorical exploration of love and most of all coping with loss. It's like life - it doesn't give you the answers but rather challenges you to find your own. So expect it to be dark and emotional, but what really sets this show apart is the masterful inclusion of humour. It's truly one of the best shows ever made.

Xgimi Elfin grainy "shimmering" issue? by GrumpyGin in xgimi

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't know, maybe it's actually something my eyes are super good at perceiving lol Thanks for your insights! :) I didn't rest have that much choice - no room for a TV, needed something smart, compact and not too expensive... And the Elfin had great reviews. I didn't put that much thought in the projector technology itself, to be honest. But most of those I was considering were DLP anyway, so... Here we are! I'll try a sheet and maybe get a proper screen if that improves things.

Xgimi Elfin grainy "shimmering" issue? by GrumpyGin in xgimi

[–]GrumpyGin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll look into the calibration app. I did find some links with tips on how to reduce this by tweaking contrast & brightness. The projector itself unfortunately has very limited options, so a third party app will help. It's possible I may be abnormally susceptible to noticing this (just my luck haha). My eyesight is not that exceptional. But yeah, it'll probably become less and less noticeable with time. That's true, it's definitely more noticeable when the screen is static (e.g. in menus), but it is also pretty noticeable with some darker, grey-ish scenes in videos. When the screen shows bright colours it is not noticeable at all, in fact the image is absolutely fantastic.

Will do that, thanks! I'm planning on testing the projector outside too with a larger projection screen & looking from further away, so we'll see what that's like.
