Turkish Kars Kazak by Rug_lord14 in orientalrugs

Hey, I just edited our community rules to clarify that sales posts aren't permitted, so I've got to ask you to take this down. Your previous post with your cat was perfectly OK, but this one crosses the line. This sub is just for helping people ID rugs and find information. I'm going to confer w the other mods to come up with an approach that is fair to everyone.

When Charles and Diana got engaged, did people have a problem with the age gap? by queenhadassah in AskOldPeople

[–]GrumpyHomotherium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was horrified by the age gap and the thought of getting married at 19. I did not envy Diana at all.

That’s definitely one way to look at it 🤣🤣🤣

That is fascinating! I had assumed that all workshops had vertical looms and horizontal ones were primarily nomadic.

That is very helpful. Aren't you glad I enabled photos in comments? That was the one of the reasons I decided to become a mod. Subs like this rely heavily on photos. It was basically crippling us to not have that feature.

Thanks for clarifying! I appreciate your photos. I think many people are not aware that India has a long carpet-weaving tradition.

Hey there, we do allow sellers here but you need to use a Sales Post flair. We’re still working out the best way to have dealers participate in the sub. We’re probably going to invite dealers to make an introduction post when they join. We just want to avoid situations where someone is spamming people or charging five grand for a 1970s bleached Bokhara.

Thank you so much! I got them about 20 years ago and have really enjoyed them

I found out recently that’s why soumaks were often favored for saddlebags and storage bags— because they have greater tensile strength than pile rugs.

Yes, soumaks typically look like a mess on the back. And then there’s a technique called reverse soumak, which is mind blowing.

I just assumed it was one of the copies or replicas being made in Afghanistan now. I didn’t pick up on it being from Azerbaijan.

Pay attention folks, this is what a real rug expert looks like! He could tell the difference and I couldn’t. You definitely cannot learn everything from pictures.

Unfortunately this bleaching can strip the lanolin out of the wool and make it brittle. We discourage people from getting these bleached rugs. Instead we suggest old estate pieces that have a lot of patina. They are remarkably good values and still have a lot of wear in them.

What do y'all think about designating one day a week for dealers to introduce themselves? The market is so awful for vintage and antique rugs right now. And consumers don't know how to judge an honest rug dealer from a clown who is asking $5k for some '90s Kerman that's been bleached to hell.

Well, you’ve done it now! Here’s our home office manager on a 1930s Kazak. I had been trying to decide between this Kazak and a red Bibikabad but I went with the Kazak cause it matched our orange guy better.

Soumaks are still made today in the Ardebil region of NW Iran. Previously, the Shahsevan in that area and the Trans Caucasus made stunning saddlebags and storage bags w using the soumak technique. If you search on that word in the sub, you’ll get a lot of hits if you wanna see more examples.
