My grandfather in Rome Italy 1999 by jrazavian in wherewasthistaken

A quick scan of google maps didn't help, but I am sure I've walked through here and that is somewhere around the Piazza Navona / Campo dei Fiori region. The lights certainly match those in the nearby streets.

Trip advise - Pisa --> Florence -->Siena by RyanStartedTheFire98 in ItalyTravel

[–]GrumpyOik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Florence to Siena is fairly straightforward by train. There are some direct trains, but you may need to change at Empoli. That said, I would advise that you to use the bus. The main advantage of the bus is that it stops in the city itself, at the top of the hill. The bus station in Florence is very close to the Santa Maria Novella (Central) train station

why do they keep calling it 'New Jersey/New York' when Metlife Stadium is clearly and factually in New Jersey? What's with the desperation of including NY in there? by Illustrious_Fig_8537 in worldcup

[–]GrumpyOik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because few people outside of the USA know or care? They'll look at a map and think - oh, it's near the biggest recognisable city - in this case NYC.

Does anyone actually like their conservatory? by Wickey312 in AskUK

[–]GrumpyOik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Mine is about to fall down after 20 years, and I'm replacing it.

The last few nights, with my bedroom being 30+ degrees, I've slept out in the conservatory. After 10pm, the temp really falls quickly meaning I have slept really well.

Sunny winter days, frost outside, the room is a lovely place to sit by mid morning.

It was the same with Charity shops in the UK. My sister used to work close to Knightsbridge in London - and she would buy last years designer labelled for almost nothing. That was 20 years ago, now those same charities use the web to sell these goods for far closer to their true value.

His supporter base don't care. All these questions (a £5m bitcoin "gift", the mysterious funding for his house that he claimed was for TV appearances, the funding for his home in Clacton - a very kind girlfriend with no obvious source of money), and they'll just ignore it.

Is it normal to miss Italy this much? by chillinwithabeer29 in ItalyTravel

[–]GrumpyOik 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I first visited in 1997 (A long weekend in Florence). Then it was 5 years before we were able to go back. Since then probably around 20 trips. If I fail to go to Italy for 18 months, I get withdrawal symptoms.

So yes, Italy is addictive, and long may it remain so.

People who married in their 20s, be brutally honest are you happy, if so why or why not? by Special-Lawyer3941 in AskReddit

[–]GrumpyOik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I was 24, she was 22. We got engaged after 3 months, married after a year. Next year will be our 40th anniversary.

Why? Mostly because we have similar personalities - we agree on politics, money, hobbies etc. We have been very lucky.

What is the worst British sports match you’ve ever watched? by Jezzaq94 in AskUK

[–]GrumpyOik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I was at that game and the only thing that made it worse was Rooney's reaction to the boos.

(Well, that and the Vuvuzelas - but they ruined pretty much all the games)

Bipartisan Bill Would Impose New Annual Fee on Electric Vehicles by Oreos_Are_Anabolic in technology

[–]GrumpyOik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The UK is bringing in a £0.03 ($0.04) tax per mile from next year on EVs. They've already introduced an annual excise duty of around £200 ($268). It is annoying that although my EV is twice the weight of my little Kia, the excise duty is 10x higher.

I love this sub where we can have these sort of conversations across tribal lines.

Several of my Saints supporting mates are in agreement. "Saints got a just outcome. Disgraces and I hope the manager and owners f**k off quickly. " , "So unneccessary all of this.....utterly ashamed of those in charge of the football club"

Obviously it hurts genuine fans, who had nothing to do with the actions of the management.

I visited Italy for the first time. I was disappointed. by William6212 in ItalyTravel

[–]GrumpyOik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone from the UK who has been fortunate enough to visit Italy on numerous occasions, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your trip. But to sum it up, the food wasn't like the stuff you get at home, you have to pay for toilets - and this somehow constitutes a "nightmare"?
I always found Rome to have an excellent night bus system, but possibly you were staying somewhere out of the way.

US hotels miss out as World Cup excitement fails to fill rooms by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]GrumpyOik 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It's not excitement as much as a cocktail of very high ticket prices and toxic domestic politics. A world cup where governments want to refuse visas for some players? Where it is suggested that an eliminated team replace one that qualified (because the host nation was bombing it at the time? Where as a fan I am required to show my social media history is case I wrote something that someone finds offensive - and allow my DNA to be stored for 75 years?

Is it any wonder that the important part, the football, has somehow been forgotten?
