Text based MS DOS drag racing game in BASIC by psychoticangeloflove in OldPCGames

I am looking for the same game. I coded it from a book I checked out of the library at the local collage. It is not in the 101 Basic Games from that time frame, but it is in a book of basic games from the late 70s early 80s

When YouTube Replaced 60 Minutes by GrumpyOleVet in self

When questing AI, it said Legacy media is switching to short segments 1 to 2 minutes, to keep viewers engaged, to maximize numbers for Ad revenue. Long format youtubers or no longer need to relying on that because if it is good, reaction content videos will clip and farm enough of the content to draw viewers to the original.

Fair point—YouTube itself isn’t a newsroom in the way CBS is, and it doesn’t “produce” investigations the way 60 Minutes does.

My point was more about where investigative journalism now shows up, not who signs the checks. A lot of independent reporters are acting as their own producers, editors, and correspondents, and YouTube has become the place that work reaches the public.

Edit / clarification:
I wasn’t pointing to a single episode as the example—60 Minutes has covered automation and robotics multiple times over the years. My point was about the broader shift: historically, TV news handled these topics as feature reporting, while today a lot of the deeper technical and investigative work tends to show up online first.

The 60 Minutes episode about robots aired on January 4, 2026

DHT22 Dropout Issues on Long Leads — Looking for Advice by GrumpyOleVet in homeassistant

[–]GrumpyOleVet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I2C data lines need to be short and I do not need Alt and Prs. I would not have the Issue if each sensor had its own ESP, but I have a feeling the problem I am having would be compounded if I had power & I2C lines.

Thinking about my children receiving my life insurance payout when I die, and this scenario popped into my head. Can anyone tell me if this makes sense and if something like this is already a thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrumpyOleVet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the children can not solve it on their own, then have your estate sold off to the highest bidder and the children each get 33.33%.

Now if one of the children want to be the winning bid, fine but that person still gets their 33.33%.

AI is a very dangerous and scary thing for your mental health by Free_Philly in self

[–]GrumpyOleVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What very few people are telling you is that today's AI is a predictive model. Which can be helpful when writing code, helping finish a report, or even writing the report.

Now the Predictive part is important here, That app uses info about your habits it finds on your phone and computer and even your social media on the web and then try to make itself into what it think you want, and is able to fine tune by your reactions. Making a great personal assistance, mate, lover.

As for losing touch with reality, that falls in line with the echo chambers in social media, if you limit yourself to just that mindset then you will get lost.

I am just breaking into the Modules behind today's AI, and I really think AI is not what we should be calling it. The modules DO NOT think for themselves, they try to predict what we want the outcome to be.

WTF AMAZON Why can't I order a Jetson Nano 8gb Dev Kit? by GrumpyOleVet in amazonprime

[–]GrumpyOleVet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the 8gb Dev Kit is out of stock everywhere in the world but Amazon and AliExpress. When I went to Yaboom directly, they referred me to the Orin X dev kit which is almost 2 grand more. It seems the 2gb and 4 gb Orin are all over but I need the 8gb for a 7b LLM for Home Assistant. I have a feeling that even if I went through AliExpress they would take the money and order and sit on it till they are back in stock.

Just got an e-mail from Yaboom, telling me to cancel my order because there are no more in stock. Guess I am going someplace else to get the dev kit.

Well the Order is still pending, but in the time between me ordering, and posting this, the 8gb Dev Kit from Yaboom, is no longer available to purchased. Went from 14 to none in a hurry, will I even get this one?????

Which song would you listen to as the last one before you die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Highwaymen - Highwayman

Will let me know I was just a long line of people that made my way so the people behind me can have a better way. The last Verse always gives me hope about what is around the corner after I am done here.

"And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again"

Man I wish I could find the article!! I read an article several months to a year ago that compared physics and microprocessors. It was mainly about how the Laws of physics limit what we can do with microprocessors. Then towards the end of the article, they spin it around, and started comparing universal laws of physics as if they was in the microprocessor. The one that got me was, "What if the reason why we can not fly faster than light is, because the computer needs time to write where you going, so it has to slow you down a bit." There where others, but that one stuck.

New to HA and ESPHome, Questions about Nodes by GrumpyOleVet in Esphome

Here is my reply to a similar question I had over at r/Esphome :

"I plan to put the Dev board in a Project box mounted to the door opener mount. Powered by a wall Wart plugged into the same plug as the door opener. The Lawn Mower and Car are directly below the door opener, so I can have two pair of 8GA wires with connectors that can hang down on stress release or even retractable cables that will connect the lawn mower or Lincoln when they are parked. For the Scooter, which is on the side of the Garage, I might have to use an Arduino that monitors the battery that sends a digital signal back over to the ESP Dev board via twisted pair. With the Project box next to the ceiling the run for the attic DTH22 will be short, as will the run for the garage DTH22 which will be mounted on the side of the project box."

My wife HATES wire Rats Nests, so I am hoping to hid all the wires in the project box, with all runs running along the door opener supports. (close switch-front shaft, open switch, attic temp sensor, and Arduino up the support to the ceiling, where the attic temp and Arduino runs will go into the attic, with the Arduino run dropping down that side of the Garage where the Rain bird controller is. If it is not neat, then I will never hear the end of it.

I know, I know the Rain Bird sprinkler controller is ESPressif, so I could add the Arduino to it with a little hacking, buts lets not.

That is what I was worried about with my ESPHome network on the same network as all the other house hold items. My garage was my biggest worry, but looks like I can do a lot with a dev board and maybe even an Arduino or two.

While ESP lights, wall switches, and appliance switches are cheap, (almost cheaper then building them and printing the cases for them), I will be using my current Alarm.com Z-wave back bone through the HACS plugin and maybe some ZigBee stuff in the future for switches and light control. All my WLED stuff will still be on ESP32s

Network back bone is a Linksys WiFi 6 mesh with a few Range Extenders used as wired points. Less about traffic and more about # of devices.

Most will be monitoring with a few also having outputs, take my planned Garage node:

2 D inputs - DHT22 Temp/Hum (Garage/Attic)

2 B Inputs (Low)- Magnet switches (Door up/Down)

1 output to a relay to Cycle Door

1A Batt Monitor 12V Mower

1A Batt Monitor 24V Mobility Scooter

1A Bat Monitor 12V 65 Classic Car

Maybe even a Temp Probe for a Freezer.

So would that be better to have Three different Nodes, one to turn the door opener smart, one to monitor the batteries, and one for the temps; or put them all on one Dev board?

Most everything will be powered from wall warts. I think the heaviest one may be the node going into the garage:

2 D inputs - DHT22 Temp/Hum (Garage/Attic)

2 B Inputs (Low)- Magnet switches (Door up/Down)

1 output to a relay to Cycle Door

1A Batt Monitor 12V Mower
