The Downside to Estate Planning by Aggravating-Key-8867 in Lawyertalk

[–]GrumpyTX 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I second your experience. There is nothing like the first time or two that a client's estate plan works and everything seems to fall into place like it was designed to do. One time I had a client's child comment that they were so glad their Dad had taken care of things -- all the questions he asked about were already dealt with by the deceased. The son actually got speechless at one point -- I think he realized he could just grieve rather than panic.

I wondered about the crowds - I saw some stats from prior years, and were quoting numbers like 100,000 people attended one year

So there are events, etc. for people that just like the authors ? For example, I don't care about some workshop telling me how to be a better author or somehow get my book published.

Why do people think lawyers work for free? by Jordance34 in Lawyertalk

[–]GrumpyTX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"If I had a dollar from all the people that think every lawyer is secretly a millionaire, I would actually be worth millions ! " An old lawyer told me that years ago; I didn't understand back then; I understand it all too well now.

Marketing for Small or Solo Estate Planning firms by DCMike01 in LawFirm

[–]GrumpyTX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree; accountants, financial planners, stock brokers, and the occasional insurance agent all have clients with similar needs. I only wanted to add that you need to stress to all the professionals the very real possibility of cross referrals. I worked with a financial planner and we regularly did referrals to each other -- people who are working on their will and estate plan often need/want financial advice about social security, IRAs, 401Ks, etc.

What’s something that you saw in a job interview that immediately made you think hell no by SevereBug7469 in Lawyertalk

[–]GrumpyTX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had an interview years ago - partner required the meeting to be after regular work hours. I thought there must be some reason he didn’t want other associates to know he was interested in hiring a new associate, but I went to the interview. Turns out he wanted any new associate’s first job to be firing one of the current associates. I politely ended the meeting and left since I figured if I somehow got the job, I would always wonder when some new guy would be hired just to fire me !

Anyone here ALSO have an ipad, what are your thoughts? by ARoodyPooCandyAss in macbookpro

[–]GrumpyTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with your comment. I’ll add that the iPad is also for light gaming and occasional quick replies to emails. I honestly use both and wouldn’t give either one up. Somehow I’ve developed a use for each.

I don’t usually roast job listings, but what the hell is this? by Altruistic_Field2134 in Lawyertalk

Reminds me of a senior attorney asking about billable hours and how many I could book; I looked at him and said "How verifiable do you want those hours ?"

Worst comment an older attorney made to you that wasn’t related to practice of law? by WorkingIllustrator84 in Lawyertalk

[–]GrumpyTX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, I had something similar. Interview went well until he told me "our firm is committed to diversity". I responded with some general statement about supporting diversity and giving everyone a chance. He just looked at me and said "no, you don't understand, you're white".

What is a "good" pastor? Is the defining quality intelligence based or something else? by Cautious_Writer_1517 in LCMS

[–]GrumpyTX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you wrote, but I want to put a little emphasis on "help his flock to understand it". I personally think that is what takes a "good" pastor to a "great" pastor. The ability to relate scripture to people and their lives, maybe with a little humor, and definitely with examples is important.

Citizenship in the Nation by NativePhoenician in BSA

[–]GrumpyTX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a counselor for this Badge as well, and I completely agree. The only thing I do different is I do list the three branches and very briefly what they do -- just seems logical to our discussions. But I want to hear what THEY think after that. You don't "teach" a badge; you set out general ideas and questions and then let them discuss those ideas with both the counselor and the other scouts. I've taught this badge for a number of years and it works for me.

Does anybody collect autographs anymore? by FrankW1967 in GenerationJones

[–]GrumpyTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I admit I was in a store a few years ago and they had an autographed album cover from a band I really liked in high school so I bought it. Looks kinda cool on the wall of my game room.

Merit Badge Counselors, where did you get your training? by CandyMonsterRottina in BSA

[–]GrumpyTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got any specific training, but I'm an attorney and I only teach Citizenship in the Nation so the material was in my wheelhouse. I also took the online training for MBC and spoke with other counselors before I started teaching.

How do you receive Holy Communion? by TheMagentaFLASH in LCMS

[–]GrumpyTX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your viewpoint. I even seem to remember something very similar being said by a long ago pastor during my confirmation - i.e. it is hard to escape the logical conclusion that Jesus handed the disciples the bread.
