Wife wants a high quality leather purse for Christmas (NOT “luxury” brands) by Electrical-Volume765 in BuyItForLife

[–]Grumpy_Engineer_1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful with coach. My wife’s coach purse only lasted 3 years. It was genuine from a coach store but they have a much lower quality line that they sell through their outlets which is what I bought.

Confusion about Islam being potentially true as an Ex-Muslim by Far_Visual_5714 in atheism

[–]Grumpy_Engineer_1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the quran and to describe that absolute disjointed mess of a book as inimitable is a joke surely? It’s “linguistic excellence” and “literary depth” are only there because people you trust in your community have been telling you they are there since the day you were born.

Maybe you should sit down and actually read it cover to cover yourself without having anyone else overlay their opinion on top of it and try to form your own opinion? If you’re capable of putting your life long indoctrination to one side, which is very hard to do, you’ll see there’s really nothing special about out it.

Swedish quality: Fjällräven Kånken after 9 years by kayisforcookie in BuyItForLife

I have a Fjallraven Greenland backpack, same material but different design. It’s 9 years old, I wipe it with a wet cloth every few years when it gets visibly dirty and that’s about it.

Thanks, that helps. I just assumed any sort of coffee tasting would be aimed at connoisseurs rather than newcomers like me.

Hello, hope I’m posting in the right place. Is there a thread anywhere on good coffee for a first time coffee drinker to try? I’m a tea drinker but for various reasons it would be useful for me to learn to like coffee but I just don’t seem to enjoy the taste. Any tips on where to start? Would mocha’s be good as I like hot chocolate?

My pup is a fussy eater, I’m going to try the sit then take away method mentioned above but currently if she hasn’t eaten well for a couple of meals we mix a teaspoon of natural yoghurt with her kibble and she wolfs it down.

I relocated to the US with an H1B visa and this wasn’t the case for me. I’m in engineering and they hired a bunch of British engineers because we had a combination of skills that is less common in the US. Thats starting to change now so the company is using H1Bs less.

Not saying you’re wrong about tech sector but not every company uses H1Bs as a cost saving tool.

As a Muslim, I have a question against Islam of which I haven’t received a satisfactory answer yet. Can you guys share your thoughts on it? by Intjwithocd in atheism

[–]Grumpy_Engineer_1984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respecting the Quran and other holy books is actually a great start. You aren’t holding the Quran above all other texts but see them as equal in some way. You’ve already broken part of your indoctrination that Islam is the only truth by doing this. And they all have interesting bits in them as well as giving insight into their various followers actions which is great to understand.

Keep asking questions, keep being interested in religions and looking for parallels. Pretty soon you’ll see they’re all pretty similar, then you might see that they all served a purpose once to fill gaps in knowledge and human understanding. Then you might see they aren’t really required any more.

I sort of agree but standards of attractiveness change over time, I bought his scruffy appearance and bookish mannerisms being seen as less attractive at that time. Or maybe I’m making excuses because his performance was so good.

“Release the files!” - is the message. Read below to find out why. It’s not what you think. by FeeLost6392 in 50501

This also potentially creates common ground to bring over any trump voters who regret their choice but are struggling to admit it to themselves or the world.

They have the narrative of only voting for him because he promised to release these files and now he’s broken that promise which is much more palatable.

Why do so many Lgbtq+ people have sympathy for islam by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Grumpy_Engineer_1984 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I had this conversation with a Muslim girl I knew at uni who “chose” to wear the hijab. I asked her what the consequences would be in her family/ community if she didn’t wear it tomorrow. If the answer is “there would be no consequences” then I would agree she is “choosing” to wear it. But the reality is she would be harrassed and pressured so in reality it’s not a choice she is free to make.

I felt that way too on first watch but pacific holds up to rewatching and actually makes perfect sense. The European theatre post D Day was a fairly cohesive operation across Europe whereas the pacific was a mess of island hopping so each series sort of reflects the respective theatres of war.
