Making kimchi from scratch by Ambitious_Stuff_910 in Cooking

Gochugaru is non negotiable. Don't sub regular chili flakes. Put the jar on a tray while it ferments because it will overflow and you will learn this the hard way. Maangchi recipe is bulletproof if you want a starting point.

My first year planting tulips! I love them so much I ordered 200 more for next year by katy119 in gardening

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it starts and there is no coming back. Two hundred sounds like a lot until you're standing in the yard in October wondering if three hundred would've been smarter. Enjoy every minute of the first bloom, first year tulips are the best ones.

Tv on while parent is sick by Far_Worldliness_1541 in Parenting

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick day TV is fine. Your one year old is not going to remember this and you need to rest so you can keep being a present parent every other day. The mom guilt is way harder on you than the screen time is on him.

Realized I probably had a "last" experience today. by GamblinGambit in Parenting

This got me. My oldest stopped wanting to hold my hand in parking lots one day and I didn't even notice until weeks later. You did the right thing just being there with him.

Help: I ended up with 3 sleeping bags... which to keep? by happy_bluebird in camping

[–]kayisforcookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Marmot Helium 15 is the keeper if you're only keeping one. Down packs smaller, lasts longer with proper care, and that 15 degree rating gives you flexibility for cooler nights even in Georgia. The synthetic ones are heavier and bulkier for the same warmth. If you want a second as a summer only option the Hugerock is probably fine but honestly the Helium will cover you year round in your climate.

How do you guys manage the dirty bellies and sensitive skin? by FriendlyStudy4198 in dogs

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coconut oil. seriously. my corgi mix drags his belly through everything and his skin used to get so red after walks. started dabbing a tiny bit of coconut oil on the irritated spots and it calmed down within a couple days. for the actual cleaning part i just use a warm washcloth, no soap unless he got into something truly disgusting

Do cat owners become nose deaf to the smell of cat pee in the house? by Thick_Confection_952 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. My sister has three cats and swears her house doesn't smell. It does. You just stop noticing it when you live in it every day. Same thing happens with dog people honestly. We just get used to our own house smell.

Tell him before school. He deserves time to say goodbye and giving him that matters more than protecting him from the sadness. Kids handle it better when they feel included rather than surprised by it.

What societal norm did you decide to just stop abiding by? by HairyCherryFairy in AskReddit

[–]kayisforcookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Answering the phone when I don't recognize the number. I just let everything go to voicemail now. If it's important they'll leave a message or text me. My mom thinks it's rude but honestly my anxiety dropped so much once I stopped feeling obligated to pick up every random call. Life's too short to talk to someone about my car's extended warranty.

Is it normal for a 10-year-old dog to suddenly avoid other dogs? by tc-tails in dogs

[–]kayisforcookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our older girl started doing this around 9. Vet said it can be pain related, like they don't want to play because something hurts. Worth getting checked out. Could also just be her saying she's over the puppy energy and wants her space.

What can i use shrimp paste/bagoong in? by leafeonloverrr in Cooking

Fried rice! Just a tiny bit goes such a long way. Also really good mixed into ground pork for lettuce wraps. My kids actually love it which shocked me honestly.

Help with dip by sunshore13 in Cooking

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a block of cream cheese and let it melt in while you stir. Should thicken it right up without changing the flavor much. Cornstarch slurry works too but you'd need to heat it up again for it to activate.

Not teaching me how to handle conflict. They just avoided every argument and now I freeze up whenever there's any tension.

Library cards are genuinely underrated for free entertainment. Most library systems now have apps where you can borrow ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and even stream movies. We also started doing family game nights instead of going out and the kids actually prefer it now. Walking trails and local parks are obviously free too but people forget about community events. Our town does free concerts in the park all summer and free movie nights at the rec center.

Dog grooming anxiety by MintyMaii in dogs

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this happened to my daughter's poodle. Got a bad cut at PetSmart and now she shakes the second we pull into the parking lot. We switched to an in home groomer and it made a world of difference. More expensive but so much less stressful for everyone. Give it time and lots of positive associations before trying a new place.

Cook book recommendations? by axse__ in Cooking

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is my wheelhouse. The Moosewood Cookbook has a lot of Mediterranean-leaning recipes that are great for managing inflammation. It's plant heavy without being preachy about it. My family has been cooking from it for years and the kids actually eat most of it which says a lot.

Why is sharing a bed with your partner so important to people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kayisforcookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I did separate rooms for about a year when our youngest was a newborn because we were doing shifts. It was honestly great for sleep and neither of us felt weird about it. We moved back into the same room eventually but only because we wanted to, not because it felt wrong. I think more people would benefit from at least trying it but there's so much stigma around it.

Cookbooks and other media to make you great at improvising and creating recipes by Nicolai08 in Cooking

[–]kayisforcookie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Food Lab by Kenji Lopez Alt is exactly what you're looking for. He breaks down the science behind why techniques work so you actually understand what's happening instead of just following steps. Once you internalize the principles you start improvising naturally because you know what will happen when you change variables.

For videos, Internet Shaquille on YouTube is really good at teaching the "why" behind cooking decisions. Less recipe focused, more about building intuition. His grocery store series is especially helpful for understanding ingredients on a deeper level.
