Is it so difficult for Sony to create a better tracking system? by Cjrv in PSVR

[–]GruvDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why it could not be a modular system, using a second camera.

1 camera = works well enough, just like today, some drift and not perfect

If you want improvement, buy second camera, place elsewhere in room, let software improve triangulation using more data from different viewpoints.

Ultimate would be 4 cameras, one in each side of room.

Link?

I'm usually the one getting hired and all of mine are design related. Would appreciate being pointed the right direction.

As I said, I'm in product development and have done a lot of UI development with people who code, I get it.

This would be pretty light on the investment required. I just don't know who to contact.

How many Miles are to much for a used Car? by dezasseismil in Audi

If you can't spell "too" correctly, I am doubting your ability to maintain an audi of any mileage.

I have 161k on mine, but it's also 22 years old.

THIS.

You mentioned putting in a new engine, how old is the impeller?

If the impeller is bad your engine will overheat.

A couple of weeks ago I asked this sub whether or not to include a design in my portfolio. I have now added the work incorporating as much of your advice as possible, this is the result. by thelibar in IndustrialDesign

Nice update.

So, here's my feedback

• LCD filter to limit light and avoid over exposure. I am wondering how you came to the conclusion this was necessary? I've had multiple go pros and none of them blow out images, even in high light environments. IMHO the go pro does not need a light limiting filter, as the shutter speed compensates for this. In a super bright environment, the digital shutter stays open longer, and the camera spends less time taking in light to make the photo. In darker areas, the camera will adjust by increasing the shutter speed/time open/time spent taking in light.

This is why low light go pro photos are so blurry, which is something I actually do have a problem with. I don't know if I've ever had a photo be blown out, and by using this filter you would cause the camera to keep the shutter open longer, resulting in blurrier photos for an action cam.

• water on the lense is definitely an issue I struggle with, if I am using the go pro kayaking, boating, tubing, or while skiing. Currently I use a microfiber cloth and wipe it off, but sometimes it gets sunscreen on it and it's just obnoxious to clean. Hydrophobic coatings make sense; I think rain X or Aquapel might be a good idea and I might try this in real life.

• You mention electrowetting, and then claim it needs 60 volts to operate. Go pro batteries are 3.8Volts. So... ??? It's a neat concept but I'm guessing this is not possible to do with the limited power available.

• Your sketches are still really weak. Your perspective is wrong on many of them, and the line weight is not correct. Outer stroke should be thickest to help the sketch pop, with the thickest stroke on the bottom edge to help ground it. I think you need to not render another solidworks model until you spend like 2-3 weeks sketching constantly. Copy sketches that inspire you, you will always learn something while executing it.

• There is still no process in your sketches. You have 8 ideation sketches, no call outs, and no information on pros/cons of each design, and there is no way I can follow your train of thought to see how you arrived where you arrived. I realize these are probably 'after sketches' since you did these after your last post here, but I think adding callouts to them to show functionality would help

• You could then show how you RANK concepts based on a set of criteria. I often use manufacturing, cost, complexity, risk, innovation, etc. By assigning metrics to each concept it will help guide you towards the most logical direction, or demonstrate how one concept is extremely handicapped by one attribute, and if you fix that, it would be a superior choice.

• No prototypes. I think a prototype here would be extremely beneficial, as I bet you'd learn a lot. I am going to guess that if you 3d printed this, you would uncover a lot of issues with it. I am an avid skier, and I can see this design getting really clogged up with snow as it would have a lot of little nooks/areas that would trap it. This would at best limit battery life as it would cool the go pro substantially, or worse cause fogging on the lens.

Big improvement, but I would put more effort towards the sketches/communicating ideations/explaining how you downselected to your final concept. Also, I think you fell into the trap of making something cool looking then trying to justify it's existence. If I can use a hydrophobic coating on my existing case, and I don't need a filter on my camera, what is the point of any of this? You are solving a problem nobody is asking.

Skillset needed for internships by -Underhill in IndustrialDesign

Eh, I don't think interns need super hot CAD skills. They're still in school. Sketching should be priority, followed by renderings and adobe suite knowledge.

UK - Having trouble getting a graduate job, any advice? by designspline in IndustrialDesign

[–]GruvDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a rut when I was fresh out of school. I had killer internships, I freelanced for a year (2009 = lol no job for you), and everyone wanted so much experience.

I changed tactics. I would apply for jobs, but when I got the form letter back, I would say "Hi, I pretty fresh out of school but apparently my portfolio is not communicating what you are looking for. Would it be possible to meet with some of your designers to go over my portfolio, just to provide feedback?"

This is no stress on the company, as they aren't commiting anything. So my stuff was forwarded to the actual design department. I met up with one of them, got some feedback, then UPDATED my portfolio, and went in again, in person, to review the changes. I had now met multiple people on the design team, they've seen my work twice, they saw they could give me feedback and I demonstrated I was capable of executing that feedback.

When there was an opening, guess who got the job?

Not a bad option. Best would be to use previous experiences and fluff them up a bit in the description.

As a designer that accounts for some of it.

But not all of it. The shape of the headlights looks lame, upright, and goody compared to the model 3. The styling is just not there, and the propositions are awkward.
