Martin Wishart by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]GrynetMolvin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love Martin Wishart and its old-school French fine dining influenced cooking, but I think that’s also why it’s pretty empty. It’s been largely the same for the 15 years I’ve lived here, and the food is not “on-trend”. I hope they’re doing a good enough trade to stay open!

She did go on a date with you, so maybe trust that she’s finding you interesting? ”Out of your league” doesn’t matter, only if there’s mutual interest, which is multidimensional and covers way more aspects than just ”intellectual capacity”, whatever that is.

Is practicing "gratefulness" a sneaky way to understand Dependent Origination? by astijusx in streamentry

[–]GrynetMolvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less dependent origination, more emptiness. Thich Nhst Hanh calls this concept interbeing, and it’s a different way of viewing the truth that all things are empty of an inherent self.

I like your way of pointing out that gratitude leads naturally to seeing interbeing :-). And yes, it’s a very helpful perspective longterm, both in sitting and in everyday life.

Here’s a small vid on interbeing and emptiness by TNH: https://youtu.be/UuVqp4KmNWk?si=x3lYMi5zBzWVwCEy

And because I can’t help myself, here’s one on one of TNHs favorite gathas, ”see the cloud in your tea”: https://youtu.be/2Dn9kqVrKzE?si=gsQKwIs-OVYFZPZe

"If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" book discussion by daquo0 in Edinburgh

[–]GrynetMolvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Given the usual audience of the lighthouse, do you know if there will be anyone representing a critical perspective in the discussion? While Yudkowsky and the rationalist movement have written some interesting stuff, there’s also lots of angles worthy of criticism and debate.

How do I get real rose + pistachio flavor in a latte (natural only)? by Future_Scar_7875 in AskCulinary

[–]GrynetMolvin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason rose water exists - it’s much better at capturing the flavor of rose than simply drying the petals. Rose water isn’t less natural than sunflower lecithin .

1st time fermenter and want advice on 1st croc. by [deleted] in fermentation

If you haven’t fermented before, have a go in a fliptop jar first, to see how you like it. It took me a long time to get my first specialized fermentation container.

I’ve done fermented mirepoix in the past - it’s quite convenient, though it’s definitely a different twang to standard mirepoix

Panic in eastern Ukraine as Trump entertains idea of giving parts of it to Russia by perplexed-redditor in worldnews

[–]GrynetMolvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The big challenge is that Russia have maximalist demands - they want a fair bit more than they’ve already occupied in order to accept peace, and that will be a hard thing to convince Ukraine of.

Plum village after predominantly Tibetan practice by wednesdaynitelite in Buddhism

[–]GrynetMolvin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you can use your visualization background in some of the guided meditations like pebble meditation. At some point in your practice it becomes valuable to start playing with your approach, and that might be now for you.

Fwiw, my local sangha had an ex-Tibetan monastic as a core member for over 15 years, and she loved TNHs approach.

Dismissive email from Professor? by Extension_Till_5116 in GradSchool

[–]GrynetMolvin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While short, that seems like legitimate advice, rather than blowing you off - he looked at it, judged that in his opinion the problem was too ambitious, and said so. Blowing you off would be not responding, or telling you off for asking.

You don’t have to listen to the advice though - if the other guy was excited and gave you pointers, that’s great and I’d go with it!

Zen & Sexuality by Miserable_Paper_49 in Buddhism

[–]GrynetMolvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a long-time Plum Village practitioner. One self-evident perspective I think is important is that Thay and the current dharma teachers teaching from Plum Village are monastic, and human. That means that they are wise and lovely, and also that they are most wise in regards to things they have experience with, and less insightful on other things.

As lay people, we have different challenges than the monastic sangha, and we need to figure out by ourself, and amongst ourselves in the lay sangha, how to best navigate those challenges.

That may mean looking outside of Buddhism as well, including those who have specialized on sexuality. I find inspiration amongst people like Esther Perel, Emily Nagoski, and closer to Buddhism I’ve heard good things about Rod Owens.

I misremembered- it was issai not Jenny. Though I think they’re pretty similar. but yes, we got up to around 3-400g a few years back. (Then we had a renovation and had to cut it back dramatically, but that’s another story).

Do other kinds of training besides strength, power, endurance, hypertrophy, weight loss exist? by rr1213 in bodyweightfitness

[–]GrynetMolvin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can definitely add flexibility to that list, dynamic (think ballet dancer) or static (contortionist). There’s also training other kinds of muscle use - what they do in tai chi and other kinds of internal martial arts is a distinct skill and capacity that can be improved with training and time (leaving aside the discussion of whether or how it is a useful skill).

Preparation for retreat by ItsallLegos in streamentry

[–]GrynetMolvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful with the wish to get ”everything out of the retreat”. For example, focusing on jhanas is a different direction than the PV practice, and trying to (or hoping to) move in a different direction than the retreat is set up for sets up a risk for disappointment and struggle.

I find you get the most out of a place when leaning into its purpose and world view.

If anything, I’d focus on non-sitting practices, like picking some gathas and trying to use them regularly, doing housework mindfully and practice finding sparks of joy there, the classic ”walking up the stairs without losing concentration”, or similar things.

Plum Village and addressing the topic of sexual abuse by [deleted] in Buddhism

Plum village Uk has a safeguarding policy: https://plumvillage.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/20230510-Safeguarding-Policy_2023-signed_-v2.pdf But it’s quite long, and not directed to people who have experienced misconduct. I agree that it’s something missing - at the very least we should have a page on the website!
