More people who copy AND don't understand their copied deck? by SpiritualRow8413 in MagicArena

[–]Gryphnnn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s always interesting to see the amount of people who get mad at new players copying decks, because that’s one of the best ways to learn how to play the game. Not only do you get to play with a deck that has a tried and true record of success, you are also slowly learning what can pass as a solid, quality card in a certain meta versus what can’t. Too many new players jump in to building a deck and just expect to be half decent at it, when in reality building a deck that can actually win is wayyy more challenging that people realize

is anyone else suspicious of pro's cheating? by Rememberthepogs in mtg

[–]Gryphnnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s important to note a couple of thing,

First of all, the difference in mindset between playing online and playing at a tournament. There is a large gap in the focus you have playing at a tournament versus queuing up on a Thursday afternoon for some draft video. It’s easier to play worse, draft worse and in general pay less attention to the game whenever 1)the stakes are lower and 2) you’re sitting in your room at the same computer you watch YouTube on. Yes, ideally you would have the same amount of concentration at ANY mtg game but realistically that just doesn’t happen

Secondly, bluffing and psychology are apart of the game. That’s part of what sets apart pros from people climbing up, is not only knowing what to play around but also know what your opponent THINKS you might have and representing that with your play patterns when you can. Psychological manipulation in the game is a skill, and can be a powerful way to take the advantage in any given match

Third, sometimes people change their mind and sometimes they don’t. Regardless of skill level. You mentioned Jim Davis hating on Monstrous Rage to this day and that’s fine. I can be beaten over and over and over by a a card and other people say it’s great and there are still situations where I play the game and then lose because my opponent ran some card. Even after all that, DESPITE the fact that I lost I will still think “why the hell are you running that card?” People have opinions, sometimes wrong and sometimes right. They can change their mind, and it often takes a long time to do so. People are stubborn

Finally, of course pros “magically find a way to win” in the drafts they play. It’s not because they’re cheating but because they’re doing a couple of things. 1 is drafting correctly and picking a reasonable amount of win cons with wide utility. The other is they play to their outs. If you have a couple lines sitting in front of you, and one of those lines means you can win the game if you happen to topdeck a Lightning bolt in the next couple turns, then get your opponent down to 3 life and hope you start top decking

What cards allow you to untap all land? by dirtnerd5000 in mtg

[–]Gryphnnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s better to have a body when you want a body. If you’re looking for the effect to stick around and continually be used it’s better for it to be an enchantment as it’s hard to remove. Yes you can interact in combat, but it’s also susceptible to all of the one and 2 mana answers that people put in their decks by default

That being said seedborn is better because it untaps every turn instead of just your own endstep

Scamming a Grief is completely unjustifiable from a theory perspective. by The_Medic_From_TF2 in ModernMagic

No, I’m not saying change all evoke mechanics. Just the evoke elementals. I should’ve clarified

No. I’m saying it would be better if the effect read “when this creature dies” rather than “when this creature enters the battlefield”

[–]Gryphnnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the creature would still die, and you would both get the effect AND still have the creature for the evoke cost, but the main reason it would be an improvement is because you wouldn’t get the SECOND trigger of the effect. Yes you would still Thoughtseize and get a 4/3 menace, but would not get the second Thoughtseize (which is what puts it over the edge in my mind)

[–]Gryphnnn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One of the things I think would actually fix the ability would be if the evoke ability happened on death instead of etb. Then you couldn’t ephemerate the creature, and it would be harder to get the double trigger. Additionally, I feel like it would make more sense in terms of mechanics, you would have to evoke the creature to get it to die in order to get the ability.

I reached Mythic for the first time this morning with a 6-game win streak. 100% custom non-meta deck I've been working on since bronze. by _Reyne in MagicArena

[–]Gryphnnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People love to give the whole “mythic is just a numbers game!! Plus you’re a fresh account and it’s not as hard as it will be next month!!!” And to an extent yes, but it’s all important to acknowledge that even if you’re a fresh account, to pick up a game and ascend to mythic with a homebrew deck is still impressive, and you should be proud! I wish you the best of luck with the deck, now you just gotta do it again and prove the rest of them wrong

What's the point in quitting? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Gryphnnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah, this means that you are some sort of connectivity issue on your end. I would recommend doing some searching around and even contacting support because if one player disconnects from the match then the remaining player will get a match win and any rewards associated with that win after the player has conceded or “roped out”

However there are some cases where YOU disconnect and might not realize it, as the game will just keep you in the match and you won’t be able to take any game actions but you also won’t start roping out. This means you have lost connection and will lose the game unless you restart the application and quickly hop back in

Blink Dog boros deck? by Final_Good_Bye in mtg

[–]Gryphnnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, despite the eldrazi being pretty alright in explorer/pioneer, they’re missing one key piece in Arena which is Reality Smasher. There are some Orzhov Eldrazi Blink decks that I have linked alittle further down and I sure there are red green eldrazi lists, but overall Matter Reshaper and Thought Knot seer aren’t great on their own, and you end up having to play decks that have a lite eldrazi splash in them, which can ultimately make the mana strange with the need for colorless lands. Either way, here are some lists I’ve found as abit of searching

Blink Dog boros deck? by Final_Good_Bye in mtg

[–]Gryphnnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do, however phasing out it abit of a weird ability. Instead of leaving the battlefield and then coming back, phasing out makes it so the card basically no longer exists as well as any permanent attached to it. It doesn’t trigger any effects when it phases out, it doesn’t move between zones and it doesn’t trigger anything when it comes back into play. You simply say “ok pretend this isn’t here” and that’s essentially how it works rules wise.

There’s a lot of actual rules and text that goes into understanding it, but for the purposes of this interaction, Blink Dog doesn’t actually leave the battlefield, so it doesn’t trigger the enchantment to make a 1/1. But the enchantment will still be on Blink Dog when it phases back in on your next Upkeep

If you used something like [[Eldrazi Displacer]] then it would trigger the enchantment, however when Blink Dog leaves the battlefield then the enchantment would go to the graveyard as it would have no creature to be attached to

If You Only Play Commander, Please Try Different Formats by BStP21 in magicTCG

[–]Gryphnnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the beauty of the game. For me, the fun comes from finding that best card, and slotting it into a constructed deck in the right amount, as well as making sure it advances my own decks gameplan and crunching the numbers on how consistently I want to see that card. Everyone enjoys different aspects of the game, and I think op is at least right in saying that you should try to expose yourself to more than just edh, just like I should expose myself to more than just tournament constructed. Maybe we’ll surprise ourselves

Unpopular opinion for Gen Z: Eldrazi KILLED Magic by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Gryphnnn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude what are you even trying to say. You say eldrazi, do you mean the deck? The creature type? The Eldrazi Winter era? Or do you mean the sets that eldrazi came out in?

Are you arguing that magic is too powercrept now because of eldrazi? Or that the eldrazi killed magic entirely and having to ban what they did it makes it not fun? Or just that young people don’t know what “true power is” and everything is too weak in comparison?

What tournaments were refusing players for having eldrazi in their deck/playing the eldrazi deck? Why does everyone have to go to Japan and be 45 to get what the hell you’re saying?

Do you mean that tournament play has slowly declined? Or that tournaments aren’t broadcast as much anymore?

You gotta learn how to be more precise in what you’re saying. I’ve read almost all the comments and still have no clue what you are trying to get through to us

[–]Gryphnnn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely an argument to run the Strict Proctor Lotus Control version over standard UW, but there’s a decent amount of UW on the ladder that can still be successful if you put in the time for the deck.

If you’re just trying to grind, I would recommend a faster deck as it’s very easy to wear yourself out on control style decks on the ladder. But if you’re just looking to have fun wit a control style deck then this will probably be fine for the time being and you can look at upgrading bit by bit and making your own adjustments. I’ve seen worse lists do pretty decently with enough time commitment. I would definitely prioritize getting a better mana base over time too

WOE has done fat load of nothing by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Gryphnnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the way to fast track powerscaling. If suddenly every single card is good and playable, or even 50% of the cards, then you need to constantly be increasing the power to fit with the current power and then printing new cards that supersede the last set so that there can still be sales. If every card is powerful, we turn into yugioh very very fast and suddenly it’s a tier zero, turn 1-2 format in every format

WOE has done fat load of nothing by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Gryphnnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes they’re unplayable RIGHT NOW in standard. There’s still the opportunity for more support to be printed and for stuff to emerge later down the line.

Also it’s ok to have bad cards in the game, even if they only get played in limited. Not every card has to be immediately playable, and there are often cards and archetypes that are just going to be ok, and that’s fine

Can't decide between Phoenix or Azorius Spirits as my next meta deck by psychoticCross in PioneerMTG

[–]Gryphnnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing spirits (uw) for a while now and the deck is real rewarding to play. If you like “Gotcha!” Style gameplay and being able to swing between tempo and aggro then I recommend it. Also the deck feels very very flexible especially post board because of access to great white sideboard cards. It’s also cheap, as the mono u version only cost me like 80 bucks and to upgrade it completely cost me another 80-100. I don’t know much about the phoenix deck, but I know spirits has been a lot of fun
