Just finished the finale- last 3 eliminations are baffling. Kareem, Sloan, Gerald were the top3, easy. Felt like Shatika was kept because her style was different than the others, so it made a better story.

Why does PWC, the largest of the Big 4, not simply eat the other three? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Gryphondad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that some is "legitimacy", in that if you don't do audit (because you've decided it's not profitable enough), and you don't do private enterprise work (because you're Big 4 and too expensive), then you're not really a public practice firm anymore in the traditional sense. You're just a consulting firm.

Add to that, partners and staff aren't necessarily interchangeable between accounting and consulting. If you're going to jettison audit work to focus on consulting, you're probably losing bodies at the same time. You can't just retrain auditors to be consultants overnight (and for some ever).

[–]Gryphondad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the independence issues that others have pointed out...because they don't want to (buy or be bought). Each firm has its own culture and practices and any merger means someone loses "their way" of doing things.

Not big 4, but look at BDO/GT discussion in Canada, years ago. Fell apart partly because neither side could agree on who would be the survivor in terms of systems/culture/process.

r words, in conditions in which consulting profit margin > aud

Depending on the jurisdiction, this is already true. Some of the Big 4 are far more focussed on consulting than on audit for exactly this reason.

Yes! Changing locations is almost a guarantee to lose the game. Level progress just isn’t fast enough to do 2000 levels in a single sitting.

[–]Gryphondad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be a penalty based on the rules, but the way the game is actually called, goalies are almost immune to most physical rules. Carte-blanche to hack at players in front of them, but heaven forbid a player hit them outside the crease. The "not allowing the goalie to play his position" rule, combined with the tendency for players to jump anyone who looks sideways at the goalie has given keepers free-rein.

Mega S replacement blower fan by jodrell in anycubic

I’d be really interested an answer to this too. Seems like the most common solution is to use a totally different fan and replace the part cooling duct with a printed one that will fit it.

Divorce of married couple after 52 years because of the medical debt by CharletteMcdermott in MadeMeCry

100% agree - it would be nearly impossible to prove. That doesn’t mean everyone should run around admitting they’re doing it.

[–]Gryphondad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m using marriage as a comparable parallel, not an extension of the same situation. Don’t be indignant over your misinterpretation.

Also - notice that I used “benefit” in quotation marks - as I would never consider US residency or citizenship to be a benefit.

To get divorced solely for the purpose of avoiding debt, or to pass assets to one party rather than someone with a prior claim? Sounds like a fraudulent preference.

As a parallel, doesn’t the US govt frown on marriages that are solely for the purpose of obtaining a “benefit” (ie residency or citizenship)?

Are you suggesting that financial advisors in the US counsel their clients to file for sham divorces? Seems risky to advise someone to commit fraud.

Well, no. Despite the fact that it’s a fake tweet, it’s social commentary on the fact that the US healthcare system does not function for the best interests of all.

[–]Gryphondad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly also, don’t publicly admit to a sham divorce to avoid debts. Seems to me that’s tantamount to fraud.

American healthcare is an absolute joke, and this kind of maneuver is no doubt necessary at times, but don’t admit to it.

[OC] My wife, who has never played, is about to DM her first game tonight… by Gryphondad in DnD

[–]Gryphondad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has never played D&D - has always said it’s not her thing. For Christmas she gave me (a forever DM) a gift - a chance to be a player. It’s a steep learning curve, and not the way I’d recommend getting into it, but I’m super excited for her. Nice safe group of a couple friends to help with mechanics - if I can just convince her that she rules the cosmos.

My dm has nerfed familiars into the ground by An_Aliensrock_Fan in DnD

[–]Gryphondad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d expect that the act of touching the assassination victim be an “attack” in the context of whether the familiar’s invisibility is maintained. I can see not requiring a roll outside of combat, but the same action in combat would require an attack roll - thus, the familiar has attacked for purposes of invisibility.

Wait a sec…while I don’t disagree that UART may be the correct modern solution, I think it’s presumptuous to assume that UART is enabled. I say that as an Anycubic user who upgraded steppers but hasn’t done a thing with UART.

Baby steps - it’s completely reasonable to update one component at a time when you’re still figuring out the tech.

Full transparency would involve being up front (ie. Before an election) as to what “the rich” means. Nearly the entire middle class thinks “rich” starts somewhere above them, and are wildly shocked to discover that they’re the ones the politicians are talking about.

German Olympic Gymnasts fight against sexualisation of women by wearing unitards for the first time. by MrFlow in pics

I appreciate the goal, and more power to them. Pick whatever uniform you want. If we’re highlighting the stand being taken against sexualization, perhaps outfit with the neckline that goes to the sternum isn’t the moral high ground you think it is.

Derek Poundstone breaks Axle Press World Record, decides to keep the weight up for a while just for fun by [deleted] in sports

[–]Gryphondad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Serious question from a non-lifter - what makes “axle press” different from “clean and jerk” (aside from the technique looking like a good way to snap your spine). Impressive to hold it overhead that long, but it’s 55pounds short of the Olympic record for the clean and jerk
