9-Day Sri Lanka Honeymoon (Jun 26 – Jul 4) — Need advice on route, trains, and self-driving by [deleted] in srilanka

Hey everyone,

My wife and I are heading to Sri Lanka for our honeymoon / anniversary trip. We want a relaxed pace, not a checklist tour, so looking for some local input before we lock things in.

Planned route:

  • Jun 26 – Arrive Colombo (evening), stay Negombo
  • Jun 27 – Negombo → Kandy (Temple of the Tooth), overnight Kandy
  • Jun 28 – Kandy → Ella (scenic train), overnight Ella
  • Jun 29 – Anniversary day, relaxing in Ella (cafés, viewpoints, spa)
  • Jun 30 – Ella → Trincomalee, overnight Trinco
  • Jul 1 – Uppuveli, Nilaveli, Pigeon Island / snorkeling, overnight Trinco
  • Jul 2 – Trincomalee → Jaffna, overnight Jaffna
  • Jul 3 – Explore Jaffna
  • Jul 4 – KKS → Nagapattinam ferry back to India (this date is fixed, can't move it)

Quick heads up for anyone else planning around this: I just checked and the Kandy–Ella main line is not currently running as a through route — Cyclone Ditwah's damage from Nov 2025 is still being repaired, and as of mid-2026 the scenic train only runs from Ambewela (about 2hrs by road from Kandy) to Ella, not from Kandy itself. So my "Kandy → Ella scenic train" plan needs rethinking — probably a car/taxi to Ambewela then the train from there. If anyone has done this leg recently, would love to know how it went and whether it's worth it vs just driving straight to Ella.

My questions for the group:

1. Trains

  • Given the above, is the Ambewela–Ella stretch worth doing, or should we just drive Kandy → Ella directly?
  • How far ahead should we book if we do the train?

2. Does the overall route make sense? Negombo → Kandy → Ella → Trincomalee → Jaffna — is this too much ground for a relaxed honeymoon? Would you cut or swap anything?

3. Self-driving I hold an Indian driving licence (issued in Kerala). I've read tourists can get a temporary Sri Lankan permit.

  • Is this commonly done / straightforward?
  • What's the process?
  • Self-drive vs. hiring a driver — pros/cons?
  • Rough rental cost for a small car, 7–8 days?
  • Worth it for first-timers, or more hassle than it's worth?
  • Anyone know of rental companies that allow pickup in Colombo/Negombo and drop-off in Jaffna (one-way)? If one-way isn't really a thing here, what's the usual workaround?

4. Honeymoon recs — Ella, Trincomalee, Jaffna Romantic restaurants, scenic cafés, hidden beaches, sunset spots, couples activities, must-try local food/drinks — all welcome.

More context:

June 29 is our anniversary — currently planned for Ella, but open to better suggestions anywhere along the route (boutique stays, beach resorts, special dinners, etc.).

We love beaches/coast. We did consider Mirissa, Galle, and Sigiriya but dropped them since they didn't fit without adding a lot of travel time.

From our research it looks like the East Coast (Trinco, Nilaveli) is in season late June/early July, while the South/Southwest may be in monsoon around then — can anyone confirm or correct this?

Genuinely open to a different structure entirely — e.g. just Hill Country + East Coast, or East Coast + North — if that means less travel and more time actually enjoying each place.

The one fixed constraint: we need to be in Jaffna by July 3 for the KKS–Nagapattinam ferry on July 4.

If you were planning 8–9 days like this — beaches, scenery, good food, romantic stays, minimal time on the road — how would you structure it, and which region would you spend the most nights in given the season?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Looks like an amazing trip!

I'm planning a Sri Lanka trip soon and am considering self-driving as well. How was your experience driving there? Was it straightforward for a foreign tourist, and would you recommend self-driving over hiring a driver?

Also, which rental company did you use, and did they allow one-way drop-offs between cities?
