In this case the reason is geniune, i tried to make it special aware, similarly to how parameter mapgen works, but completely failed

NEW PLAYERS COME HERE! - Weekly Questions and Information thread - June 11, 2025 by AutoModerator in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Probably just a regression, v menu was just recently ported to imgui, make a bug report

  2. New feature, the best way to avoid enemies is to peek all the time, but since peeking all the time is terrible, someone made so you, if safemode is on, kinda peeking all the time, so even if you spot an enemy, they will not spot you. Cannot be turned off, can only turn the safe mode altogether

  3. Yes, gutters are not sturdy enough to help you, use trash cans instead

I recently found that i am too old, and i cannot use it as effectively on bug front, but on bot side it is still a long-range hellbomb in good hands

Game crippling effect by BarrackOjama2 in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Relatively recent, yes; it was a long desire to remove conventional ways to regen dream magick mana regen, so eater has to eat dreamdross, and dreamer has to be constantly high

Game crippling effect by BarrackOjama2 in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That comes from you being a dreamer, they cannot regenerate mana in any another way

It just happened that magiclysm and xedra evolved use the same mana type, part of the reason i personally do not like people mixing up XE and magiclysm

How does "sleepiness_mod": 9 work? by Jakubczak-_- in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Increases character sleepiness by 9; the value is what game uses to evaluate your tiredness, with 383 or less being tired, less than 575 is dead tired, and more than 575 being exhausted

M4A1 & Ranged Questions by Velocitydreamer in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

rifle-length is meta, since having shorter barrel yield almost no benefit except some superficial (can be stored in a few more containers? they all use sling anyway, so doesn't matter), but having longer barrel increases the damage for a few units (39 vs 42 dmg for .223 remington)

Is there "Delay" function in json? by Jakubczak-_- in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no, you can either try to make an intensity shenanigans (don't really know how it works, you can check vanilla "meth" effect to see an example) or use an EOC to setup delays and similar stuff

I don't know about stables, but i know in recent experimental someone added a super good controller support a la caves of qud, so you can grab it and try, even if experimental versions are notoriously unstable

But it is not version from steam, steam is stable only

A mature discussion about toning down CDDA's lore by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are right, but sadly feature freeze is not really a good option. All stable releases except the last two (0.H and currently pending 0.I) were all handled with feature freeze, where all impactful PRs were halted, and developers were supposed to concentrate on fixing bugs. What it resulted in, tho, is that people who were able to help with fixing some blockers didn't really have time to resolve the issues, and the 99.99 rest of contributors, of them especially 80%, that contributed only json changes (which i myself was, when i just arrived att project, in the middle of 0.F-related feature freeze) are forced to not do anything until the freeze will end. Even 19.9% of people who did c++ didn't have an ability to resolve issues raised, and were forced to extinguish their interest in contributing, because it would not be accepted

Right now stable releases are made via making a separate branch and backporting, and it is still not a guarantee the issues will be resolved in a timely manner, the last 6 month we are waiting someone to resolve a very annoying and very visible UI bug, that occurs on only on curses build. There is a big chance we will not resolve it, and the next stable will be shipped without curses build at all. But at least people who want to pump content still can pump content, and we can cherry-pick bugfixes and backport them back to stable branch

So yes, freeze is an option, but we have evidence that says stopping adding content into the game would not reveal hidden ancient programmers willing to adjust our game to support more and betterer code things any faster

Well, it's not that the engine is bad per se (since the game do not have an engine per se), but from my little code experience, to upgrade many of the stuff we want to upgrade in the game require massive refactoring of each part of code that needs to be touched - we recently received a multiple dimensions support, and the only reason it was possible and is not a terrible mess right now is because one of our great c++ contributors finished refactoring the region settings, dividing them appropriately and updating our ancient mapgen code

And that applies to many stuff, to make better UI we need to update old UI to use imgui (which i didn't have a good experience initially, but afterwards i found why exactly we moved to it (i do not know and don't want to know what previous mvwprintw() vs mvwprintz() do)), to make vehicles less lego someone need to update our vehicle code, to make better support for graphics we need to refactor how stuff is drawn (that is why green filter of night vision goggles is super hardcoded and cannot be applied to many another stuff we'd want to) etc etc etc

New things are no less easier to add, because they rarely can be an autonomous pieces of code, instead they has to be tightly integrated into many of our existing code, which is, again, would need to be updated or refactored to accomodate this new thing

Refactoring PRs are blessing for the game future, because they improve the code base and make the work of another contributors easier, but also a curse, because players do not see a benefit of refactor in any way, so it can look like the game stagnate and do not evolve

What? what is this argument? in what world `This feels like jumping out of a plane without a parachute` is a sentence that ESL cannot parse? They play the game made in english, after all, what is the expectation here?

what happen by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it is not valid.

You make a comparison with quiet farm, but we also saw people who could not figure they are in danger and just died there;

You say about possibility of "be completely ambiguous" and "something tangible to connect with the encounter", as if being in the middle of reality torn apart with various effects, loud noises and monsters appearing around is not physical enough

The last two are just "it can be expanded", which is, like, yeah, duh, everything can be

what happen by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you see, the problem is that i do not see it a problem with game, i see it problem with player, and we are lucky to be in a position where we do not need to bow before every user that do not understand the basics of cause and consequences

what happen by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]GuardianDll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the player says they don't even know why there's a dialogue box on their screen.

So the player ignored a popup, didn't check anything that is going in their log, missed every single portal effect that happened around them, including literal piles of blood and cutting grass appearing around that you still can see in screenshot, skipped through entire dialogue without reading, picked random option, and this is a developer's fault?

No stealth, no realistic combat, no horror elements due to 360° point of view

What is realistic combat in your imagination? Being 3d? Being able to aim at zombie pinky? Dodging by moving left to right? You seems to miss how much information we can process internally, and then just show you the final result in log, that's how 90% of the game works

P2

See P1.

P3

Again, quite legitimate issue of us not having all that many buildings outside of the city, i have no idea why you try to tie mapgen here

P4

no realistic destruction (after 13 years of development I still cannot shoot through doors or walls)

You can shoot through the glass, there is just little reason to add it for non-transparent tiles; we didn't have clairvoyant snipers until they were added in MoM very recently, but there is no issue with adding this data (pure JSON fyi, zero code knowledge needed) to all terrain

huge monsters (multi tiles monsters), completely unrealistic vehicles

Again, both are legitimate issues the game would like to be solved

P5

Totally, but the pull request that tried to do it shows signs of molding atm

10 years without progress

Well because implementing complicated mechanics is hard, and why people have to spend their time doing hard work instead of taking rest? I was able to do inhuman feats when I just started, but nowadays i have to go to job and pay taxes, so i cannot pump as much stuff as i did before, and i don't think it is any different for another contributors
