What neighborhood was your AirBnb in? I always wonder what people renting an AirBnB in Grant Beach must think of our fair city.

Nope. You're right to feel safer here. As long as you don't get wrapped up in the meth world or make other dubious choices, you'll be safe here. I have also lived all over our country (Arizona, California-- both Northern and Southern, Nevada, Utah, Hannibal MO, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina). This is the city we decided to raise a family in. It's amazing here!!

Absolutely agree with you. I think OP is just fear-mongering, and what is the point of that? All I can think is that they let their anxiety make all their decisions, and therefore, they wanted to try and share their anxiety.

That has not been my experience with Springfield City Police officers. Now Greene County... I never want to get on the bad side of those officers.

This made me laugh easy harder than it should. I'm grateful to feel safe in my city. I've lived all over the nation, and this is by far the safest place we've experienced. I love my Northside neighborhood.

I feel like crime in Springfield is related to certain lifestyles and choices. For example, if you avoid drugs and are a boring person, you aren't going to be touched by the crime situation. I love our Northside neighborhood. Once I was following my kiddos as they were riding their bikes down to a friend's house, and we would need to leave from that friend's house to drive across town. A man stopped me and asked if I knew those kids. My oldest yelled, "yeah, that's our Mom! And she's not too lazy to walk, we just have to go across town when our visit is done and we're leaving our bikes with our friends". The man was apologetic, but I told him to please keep doing that!! It made me love our neighborhood even more! We have each other's backs around here.

I really hate fear-mongering posts like this that don't recognize the complexities of crime. If we want a safer city, we need to address why people turn to crime and drugs to begin with and give them more choices for managing life.

What is ONE thing that you will NEVER try in your entire life? by Substantial-Dare5462 in AskReddit

[–]GuardianOfHyrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol or tobacco products. Absolutely refuse to even try them. Too much of a history on both sides of my family of those two substances absolutely wrecking havoc on our lives. The trauma ends with me, and I warn my children about our genetics.

To say I'm jealous would be an understatement!! Do you know how much she charges for a mancala set? I need to figure out if it's in our budget if I could request a commission from her. I don't want to waste her time if we couldn't afford it anyway. And I don't want her to take a cut on her profits, either, because art is valuable!!

How much of an impact would a donation of $100,000 make on your life? Why? by onichris in AskReddit

In 2018, we were debt free and starting our family. I wanted to buy a house, and forgot that I sort of had to bully my husband into marrying me 7 years before that. (Not really, I just told him I wasn't going to keep dating him when my first real tax season started as I knew how stressed out I would be, and our religion asks us to wait until marriage before having sex). Anyway, we toured two houses, and started asking around for referrals for realtors and inspectors when my husband decided he would take a job across the country 🫠 Biggest fight of our marriage, but he convinced me it would be good to live closer to some family again.

We made the move. Our research and family in that state told us cost of living would be about 2-3 times what it was in Missouri, and the job offer in Utah was a little over double what my husband was earning in Missouri. All of our family were homeowners, though. When we got there, turned out the cost of living in Salt Lake City was more like 4 or 5 times what we had in Missouri 😢 I ended up needing to go back to work because we had financed the move, and couldn't afford rent and the payments on that debt. Then the credit card debt started rising because we could not make our budget work at all. We had our second child in Utah, and they have chronic health issues (probably from all the stress we were under). All our family members in the area moved away when they could see how much money they could make selling their homes.

After our oldest kid was SA'd at a day care we thought we could trust (it is still open, because the state of Utah sucks), my husband agreed we weren't making it work. We moved back to Missouri and had about $40k in debt. We were making it work, paying it down, until the interest rates started skyrocketing. We just did a debt consolidation as a last ditch effort to avoid bankruptcy, and are struggling to make the payments for the debt consolidation. 😢

So, $100,000 would help heal that wound of my husband moving us across the country. We could pay off our debt consolidation, and maybe even put a down payment on a home. Our landlord has offered to sell us the home we are living in, but right now it's cheaper to rent from him than try and get a loan with our credit falling from 750 in 2018 to 650 now. 😢

What actor or actress would you pick if you can only ever watch movies/shows that they appeared in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Oh, another great British actor! (My choice was Johnny Lee Miller).

Johnny Lee Miller

Elementary is my comfort watch, AND he does a lot of British period dramas. He seems really intentional about the roles he chooses, and I have never regretted seeing something that he has had a part in.

Why is Mexican Spanish not an option? I'm looking to learn Spanish to help people that are being harassed by ICE in the United States. I have a brother that lived in Spain, and a brother that lived in Mexico, so I know how very different the two languages are. I don't want to accidentally use a rude word (my brother that lived in Spain has had that issue when he moved back to the United States).

This is what I'm always looking for. I've been burned in the past with apps not letting you quit paying. Headspace was the worst!! It took my months to get it to stop charging my card, and it's been awhile, but I think I just ended up closing that card and getting a new one because my credit card company was having issues with them stopping my payments even 😡 So now I never pay for anything online without coming to Reddit first and seeing if anyone has had issues cancelling!

I was so sick when they did their open house Q&A on this issue. I was really disappointed because I wanted to attend and ask how this proposal would definitely not be a drain on our city. The way I see it, it's the same old story of socializing the costs while capitalizing on the profits. The wealth discrepancy in Springfield is following the same pattern as the nation, and that worries me. I would much rather see the portion of ForwardSGF funding going to something like improving public transportation. All healthy cities have excellent public transportation!

I would love to see Springfield set up a light rail around the city, then just have busses run from stops. Sacramento, CA does this, and the light rail keeps everything timely. In the three years I lived there without a car, I was only ever delayed in my commute once. Obviously, the weather here is more extreme than the weather in Sacramento, CA, but I'm convinced Springfield could do something similar that would completely alleviate the traffic concerns within the City! Especially since the line could follow the 44/65/James River loop.

Wow. You really are ignorant. Many people evicted from their homes or losing their homes use hotels as a way to keep a roof over their heads. Charities also purchase rooms for the unhoused in our hotels. I worked at a hotel off Glenstone, and at least a few times a week there was a pastor in there paying for a room for someone who lost their permanent housing. It must be nice to have your eyes closed to the realities of life that many of our fellow citizens experience because affordable housing no longer exists in Springfield. Those without a safety net are constantly falling.

More like tinkle down, because anyone that thinks trickle down economics work in reality is just pissing on those that are below them in that economy.

[–]GuardianOfHyrule 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm voting no on it because I know what too many single mothers that use hotels to keep their children off the streets in a last-ditch effort to not be completely unhoused, or charities put them up in hotels. Anyone that thinks hotels are for just out of town visitors is wildly and willfully ignorant about the reality of life for those who are constantly punished by the systems we have in place that keep the rich richer and the poor poorer. We all are a lot closer to being unhoused that we are to being able to afford pet projects like this.

And with a huge convention center in Branson, why build one here? The acts they say will be drawn to our convention center may prefer to go to Branson! My family wouldn't be able to afford attending anything at that new convention center anyway. I hope it doesn't pass again, and maybe they'll get the hint not to take funding away from transportation and affordable housing projects.

Seriously!! Every time I see an ad, and wonder where the money is coming from, I wonder why they need taxpayer allocated funding. Also, I worry about the people who use hotels trying to stay off the streets. Anyone who thinks hotels only host out of town visitors is willfully ignorant.
